The Longest Thread (Misadventures)
DragonHeir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Yeah, it was fun! The ocean itself wasn’t very interesting (it is kinda all the same, unless you’re actually down in it), but we went to an island on two of the days, and the boat was pretty big and had some stuff to do. Yup . We were learning about this in biology, actually - apparently coral, crustaceans, and mollusks all have trouble building shells in acidic waters. Yeah, maybe. Conceptualizing such a thing is hard, of course. Life and death, creation and destruction, and literal light and darkness are kinda hard to combine without making an oxymoron.- 111859 replies

“Good. I like it when people are paying attention to what is happening around them.” Rebus smiled back. “Though I am a Narrator, I’m actually spread rather thin. But with skill and ingenuity, I am formidable, if not powerful. That is more impressive, in some ways. I’ve heard you may be both.” “I’m glad you’re still here.” Rebus kept smiling at her - if he blushed he would have. Heir kept roasting his marshmallow, and wondered what music was being played so he would know what kind of dancing he should write. “Well, the easiest way would be to simply find Eof, but I’ve had an idea for detecting Platypus - and it should work from out here.” What I was saying is that the little bit of smokite I’ve seen doesn’t feel like it fits. I may be completely wrong on that point, but if I’m not we can change how it will be to match Chaotic Order better, or work together to find a better category for it. I don’t think new thing was the problem, I think the problem was it being a new thing that changes the old things. HI! ARE WE USING ALL CAPS? I’m doing well - I am only slightly sunburned. My ocean voyage was very interesting - I saw a reef and some rays! There was very good food, but no internet, so I could not be here.- 111859 replies

DragonHeir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
That can make sense, though I’d argue there are even more variables than that. Most of them are simply a product of what people tend to make, but categorizing and extrapolating is rather fun. So, my intent with Chaotic Order was not merely the center, or even instability, but rather a specific concept where chaos and order can overlap and flow into one another. If you’re familiar with, say, the Mandelbrot Set, you might have an idea of what I’m talking about. Orderly rules - there are literally only three steps that you repeat - but the resulting shape could rightly be called chaotic. Similarly, if you roll two dice - an explicitly random action - and write down the totals, you eventually end up with a very regular pattern when you graph the results. Emergent phenomena - orderly behaviors coming from chaotic conditions and rules, or chaotic patterns arising from simple interactions - are what I intended Ordered Chaos to be about; results that seem to be almost out of nowhere when you consider the components, like how when you burn hydrogen and oxygen (which are both gasses) you get water (which is a liquid). It makes sense chemically and follows underlying rules, but if you compare the ingredients it seems bizarre. Ordered Chaos is meant to be a melding of the two concepts - the space between a random mess and a regular lattice, where you get interesting, novel shapes that are in a way both random and regular. Things like this can be more complex than either randomness or repeating patterns, through incorporating both parts. Anyway, if that made no sense, what I mean is that Ordered Chaos was intended to be a specific concept, and not merely an unstable middle point. That does work - we can come up with some sort of structure and order, then enforce it irregularly to make magic systems. Magics should have interactions, and being fundamental isn’t a prerequisite for affecting and relating to the fundamentals. I think there was actually a whole family of magics that could be supercharged with Prismite, at one point. “I think many do - you are correct in the former, but only time will tell for the latter.” Rebus absently admired the vocabulary used in the description, though he wasn’t that impressed with the man himself. Rebus took her hand with a genuine smile. That was quite helpful - Jack put it away for later. I suppose. The Ennullers are fairly easy to contact, if Xino is around (it’s almost safer to talk to them, actually - accidentally breaking the rules set by the people who can delete you from reality is to be avoided). The person roasting a marshmallow also clapped his hands, but as quiet applause rather than a magical gesture. Meat was still rather stunned. “You’re me? I’m the same, except with more letters.” “Right here,” Rebus said, “since my Author has cell service again. I’m glad to see nothing I needed to be a part of finished without me - I think I can resume as if nothing happened.” He smiled at her, then looked around. “Why, exactly, are you looking for Platypus at Eof’s house? I’d be glad to help, of course.”- 111859 replies

It’s entirely possible I won’t be able to check the Shard until next Monday. If so, I’ll see everyone then - to those of you in TLT, enjoy the party.

Shaping/Corruption was Dragon’s (it was necessary to force the two metals to touch, but could be substituted with many different things, and doesn’t need to be fundament for the thing to work), but Abstraction is the weapon Rebus got from the Dreamsmith (so it’s other Dragon’s, aka mine). It does about what you’d expect, and was needed to keep the initial Chaos and Order for dissipating before they combined. Well, there’s Light, Order, and Chaos, though those may not be very useful. And if Rebus gets his hands on more Darkalloy and a Plotblade nobody wants, he might try to allow Plotium with an Essence.- 111859 replies

Narration, Shaping, Abstraction, Prismite, and Nullite, in a process that required pretty intensive Metaphysics knowledge. You could make it other ways (Nameless’s essence-changing medallion comes to mind), but it’s much easier to use itself to make more. (Alternately, if you were asking about the name, ase is the suffix for enzymes and occasionally other catalysts) Yeah, I’m pretty sure it would either implode or explode unless you managed to put all four together to make balancium. Yeah, that’s how I feel it should work.- 111859 replies

Usually, they do - one of the ways to mix them is Combinase (or whatever we’ll call it), but the material is unstable, and can only be retained by using itself to make more of itself before it falls apart. Yeah - all the weirder combinations feel like they should be dangerous, unstable, practically useless, or all three. (Rebus’s is definitely the first two, and much less useful than Narration, though it has some useful applications for someone who can already do most things Narration can) Yeah, the material quite aggressively separates into its parts, though since they’re Light and Dark is removed, it just makes Chaos and Order (all four of those parts aren’t stabilized, so they make lowercase light, dark, chaos, and order when they are released). Yeah, I think the Thread was of Prismite, canon and the rules of Luxite, site rules of Nullite, and maybe something of Mordite. “Very well. There’s someone around who I’m supposed to talk to…” “Well then, may I have this dance?” Rebus was grinning. Jack accepted it. “I suppose I could use an oiling, though I don’t have time for that now.” Which was which one?- 111859 replies

Uh, but me, Platypus, and whoever invented Balancium already have. We’d need some manner of retconning and modification, and an agreement between many Authors, but I think it can work. Characters are of Chaotic Light, apparently. It’s very faint, but since writing things is creative, most things the Authors make is slightly Chaotic Light.- 111859 replies

I believe at the moment it says something like “some people think that the Shapers are fundamental and represent the center of the axes, but many are skeptical. Only time (and an agreement between the Authors) will tell”. Actually, if it doesn’t say that, I might make it say that. If that was the case, they’d need to continually acquire Nullite and Prismite or they’d permanently lose their powers.- 111859 replies

There is, but it’s very unfinished at the moment. I’m thinking of making an orientation page. When posting, bold text you want to be canon. A random guy - whose name happened to be Everet - wearing a cape wandered around looking for someone to talk to.- 111859 replies

Every one of them was completely destroyed in order to seal the Witherlord. Whereas borrowing a Luxsprite will only remove one Narrator from existence, and it’d be an old one rather than the new ones (although Bacon might have been a Luxsprite, which could be bad).- 111859 replies

“I haven’t really been to parties before - perhaps we should ask someone.” No, certainly not. If you accidentally take the Skeins out of history, the Witherlord would have never been sealed away, and the present day Thread would probably be a lifeless void.- 111859 replies

Just like how not every Chaotic Dark entity is a basic withergiest, there were some Witherlord equivalents for Ordered Light. The Skeins were masses of power that could be used to perform acts of Ordered Light. (Rebus actually theorized that each Essence could have a withergeist equivalent, a Fallen equivalent - the basic Entities for the other Essences, and a Witherlord equivalent) “Very well. What is one to do at a party?”- 111859 replies

DragonHeir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Rebus made a simple program to do the latter, since the compound had a tendency to destroy Nullite if it touched it and Prismite. Rebus was glad that was the case, for the sake of whoever would have had to classify what he planned to become. Rebus saved that, since he hadn’t actually made the organization yet. Back at the party, Meat the Minstrel noticed Bacon, and his jaw dropped. It punched through the ground, causing a small volcano that Whan lay down next to and some guy - maybe not even out of high school - began roasting marshmallows over. Jack seemed confused. “Thread Awareness? Noromyxo?” Note - you do not want to try putting the Witherlord in a Luxite box. It will kill you. Sealing it away in the first place killed the Skiens - the most powerful Ordered Light entities there have ever been. “I’m aware. I built some of it.” Rebus had meant a false sense of security about him. And Rebus appeared in the spotlight, flashing a dazzling smile. And he was wearing a tuxedo, with a bright orange tie. “I did tell you I wanted to make a dramatic entrance.” Jack, being a clockwork automaton, had little use for drinks and politely declined. "I would agree." Rebus led her towards the dance floor, then stopped just inside the threshold and snapped his fingers. The crystals stopped doing what they were supposed to, and instead made a circle of light - almost a spotlight - in the center of the dance floor. While Symbol's back was turned, Rebus disappeared into the crowd. But what was that he had been talking about earlier... The Rebus in armor - who was there to represent his reputation and further his current villainous goals - raised an eyebrow. He didn't speak, though - perhaps a false sense of security could help him. "I am here, and excited? But also confused - this place is bewildering. My name is Jack, and it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." The orb tried, addressing questions and archiving facts as fast as it could. They were too fast though, too overwhelming. The orb mentally curled up, trying to make the torrent go away. It didn't - the pressure was building. The orb let out a mental cry- and stopped time. The questions were frozen. The cascade of facts had paused. The orb paused, glad for the escape from the endless messages, then it picked one and answered it. It took every message it received, answered them or addressed them elsewhere, then placed them in a queue. When everything was done, it stopped Ennulling its passage of time and returned to standard operation. As it began to run out of space again, accumulating backlog, it stopped time once again and addressed excess messages. Among these messages was an interesting one. The orb sent it to a senior Ennuller bureaucrat, for there was no protocol for it. This message was a fairly odd sequence of paperwork making liberal use of the "other" checkbox, and conveyed, in summery, the following:- 111859 replies

The orb shifted into a higher focus, splitting its thoughts. One of those thoughts was simply (huh, I can do that?) <Clarify!> <Threads? Archive!> <Answer, unknown, rephrase, answer!> Rebus, wearing sleek armor patterned in greyscale and pulsing with purple lines of light, strode over. “I wouldn’t be so sure.”- 111859 replies

Rebus smiled. “Excellent - shall we go inside?” Wait, is this same clone she was talking with earlier, or is it the one that was fighting Platypus? The former is wearing his normal lab coat, accented green, while the latter is in armor, accented purple. Wait, why do you want it to avoid the wrong hands? There’s much more plot to be had if it ends up in them. Especially if they feel very bad about it once they stop being corrupted. Action 3: Follow up on the investigation results, investigating the soil and ring radiation for its possible mechanism, its effect on the local life, and its potential applications. Devote as many resources as necessary - there’s no need to stop being a research vessel, even if there is no longer a vessel. Action 4: watch natural patterns to determine what location for more buildings would have the least impact on the ecosystem - oh yeah, and then build them. An amphitheater/lecture hall, a common area, more rooms, a lab, and more food production, primarily.

The Render reach out and touched them. They moved into its body, splintered into razor-sharp shards, and pushed out several random rocks, which it deposited on Taeidin’s hand. “Ah, but I didn’t know that. The last time my Author had checked, it’d just hit 4000, but he hadn’t had time to write. I am not the me you should be bothering - I’m waiting for time for drama.” It was shorthand descriptions of nearly everything strange Sagerian was able to see, and the notebook was a good third of the way through.- 111859 replies

*Lunges forwards and catches it* Said creature-causing-a-field-of-darkness appeared as well, though folding a piece of paper was rather difficult. The orb paused. <I am your directions now. I will fill the gap. Specs?> Fell O lunatic, in case you were wondering. The Render stopped, pivoting its “face” towards him. It was, at the moment, best described as a pile of dirt and rocks in the shape of a large, crude humanoid. “I cannot do this without a replacement. Metal would be best, but your bones will suffice.”- 111859 replies

Meat the Minstrel appeared directly in his path, bursting into room-temperature, colorful flames and hence avoiding being knocked over. “Ah! Did I drop some moon vowels?” The Render has existed since page 2980ish, actually. The Render, a humanoid mass of floating objects, wandered off to go find some plates to eat so it could get a little sharper. It slowly left behind a trail of dirt, and each time it moved there was the sound of grinding rocks. “Hello, Symbol.” Rebus grinned. “Happy 4000 pages - I was getting a little worried myself.” Most of the people enthusiastically greeted her back. Sagerian barely noticed - he was too busy writing down all of the strange sights.- 111859 replies

<status?> “Many things. I’ll catch you up later, perhaps.” He accepted an invitation, still wearing his armor, though he paused to modify it a bit, adding glowing purple lines and stylish blocks of black, white, and grey. Rebus was already wandering around the castle, though for some reason he changed the highlights on his clothes to green rather than orange. The Render accepted an invitation, glad to finally get out of that frustratingly endless grassland. Sagerian also accepted an invitation, as did Jack and Everet. Several more people also accepted the invitation, though they would remain anonymous for the time being, since Heir hadn’t decided which ones they should be. Uh huh. There will certainly be no problems with that floating around, will there… I’m just imagining what would happen if some of the really OP characters ended up with it.- 111859 replies

“Good luck. I shall see you soon.” Rebus considered gathering the crystals so he could give them back later, but decided against it. I feel like it makes more sense for it to lie in the center of the axes than it does for it to somehow be unrelated but still fundamental. That would have the properties you want, I feel. The Shapers, though, have obviously been tipped towards Chaotic Darkness, and the Fragment of Corruption even more so. A desire to destroy everything is the very definition of Chaotic Darkness. The orb tried to figure out how to interface with them. “My apologies, Bacon.” Rebus looked not very apologetic. “Platypus made what I believe is Pure Darkness, and teleported it in front of every Narrator. It destroys Plotblades - I needed to borrow yours because mine was already used up in doing so.”- 111859 replies

Huh. I may go read some more of the archives to see if I can surpass your knowledge. Rebus nodded. “I understand. Sometimes I wish I could forget it myself - that is another reason to be careful with the Narrator core. You’d have to make yourself aware on purpose - since Chaotic Light and Thread Perception isn’t exactly the same thing, but if it is so ingrained into your memory, it might only take a single lapse of your thoughts to make you know.” Speaking of the lore, I’m not sure where smokite actually fits in the axes - maybe it’s supposed to be completely blank and meld to whatever it needs to be, but the Corruption has tipped it towards Chaotic Darkness.- 111859 replies
