    Considering he said this was a story he read during college, there is a decent chance this is a short story that was never published. I did a quick search and there doesn't seem to be any novel with that plot.

    I agree that people here read into things a lot, but there definitely is a possibility yellow will come into play later considering there is an entire planet out there he hasn't explored. Wouldn't be crazy if the magic there was somehow connected to the hion lines.

    I often find that worlds with an apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic feel to them tend to be the most interesting. Having a large disaster in the past creates a sense of mystery and gives a feeling that the world has a history.

    Does 'splintered herself' have to mean she killed herself? I think there should be ways to kill her while still retaining that meaning.
