  1. Interesting, the Gollancz hard cover had the three different swords, that was what I used for reference. And thanks, I obviously didn't read The OP close enough!
  2. I hate to point this out guys, but there are not 5 different blades. There are three. As far as they relate to the parts of the WoK they go 1,2,3,2,1. The Windrunners sword adorns part 1 and part 5. Symmetry, yo. It is the same pattern as the Ketek. You can see the detailed swords at this link http://isaacstewart.com/images/wok/tWoK_ICONS-webres.jpg from Issac's site. It is clear that the first sword is an elongated version of the windrunner symbol. The second two are less clear, but are probably from orders 2 and 3. Probably.
  3. Ok here is my table on Google Drive. WARNING STEEL HUNT SPOILERS though tbh by now all the info here is available elsewhere on the site. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlvnJhrTVOeKdDhtRHBod05HTjk4aElLeXpIN2RFU0E&usp=sharing enjoy. EDIT This is just my personal table that I keep updated. It contains basically an extended version of the Appendix to the Way of Kings, with all the Knights Radiant info gathered so far. Possible members of the orders are on the right.
  4. I'm glad to hear, after its description involving the towel, that the Surge is not called Surface Tension as its final name. Surface tension (as I was reading about earlier) is all about liquids, particularly water. You could manipulate liquids based on the physics, but not much more. This sounds more interesting. Thanks for the hard work gathering info everyone! I am excited to see more Surgebinding in action; what will transportation and surface tension do? How about pressure and division? Exciting times. RE the Travelling Stoneward, I am curious too. Dalinar is certain that the ancients don't have fabrials, and so I wonder where the soulcasters came from. What is mentioned about transportation in tWoK seems related to the Oathgates; maybe a Urithiru oathgate can send Radiants anywhere? Then why did the Windrunner need to "fly" in? Still so much to know!
  5. Well, in relation to the shadow, Axies the Collector refers to himself as suffering from the "Curse of Kind", so that could be the cause of his shadow. but it sounds like it could also be an effect of him being an Amian. Surely Shallan would have noticed had Jasnah's shadow behaved like all the time, especially the close quarters and stormlight they work with. As to the two men? I think they may not be referring to Szeth. Szeth was given his Blade by his people, and the Stone Shamans would "retrieve" it if he died. Also, I think an Honorblade would be significantly recognisable, an individual work of art beyond a normal Shardblade. Szeth's blade does not seem to match that description. If the two were Heralds, why would they refer to Szeth as "that creature"? Perhaps they have discovered that Jezrien's Honorblade is in the possession of a Parshendi! The plot thickens.
  6. It is of my opinion that each order has three powers, two of which it shares with other orders and one unique one which is a combination of the two. The Basic Lashing is associated with the Surge of Gravitation and the Full Lashing is associated with the Surge of Pressure. Therefore Orders 10 and 2 could use those lashings respectively. The Reverse lashing, I think, is a combination of Gravitation and Pressure. The Ars Arcanum author believes it to be a specialised type of Basic Lashing, but I am thinking that it is a combination of that and Atmosphere. Objects in the air are more likely to be pulled towards the Lashed object, and as said above negative pressure could create a pulling effect. We will probably see when we two adjacent orders properly (probably Jasnah's full powers and Shallan's full powers). In regards to the physics, remember that the Cosmere is not wholly physical as our world is. We do not know how the Cognitive and Spiritual realms supervene upon each other. In the Physical Realm, gravitation is caused the energy, stress and momentum curving spacetime. From a spacetime perspective, it would be impossible for two objects that are as close enough for Szeth to touch to experience significant gravitational difference due to the manifold property of spacetime. Space must look locally flat, due to its property as a manifold. (Note that WoB says that the Physical realm has the same physics of the real world. He made reference to particle physics here, but says it applies to physics generally). HOWEVER, we can probably think not in terms of physics but of Realmatics. We know that Shallan gives the Cognitive aspect of an object stormlight to transform. I am thinking that a basic lashing could work as follows; there is a spiritual-gravitation bond between an object and the planet it is on. However, while infused with Stormlight the bond could be altered in the Spiritual realm, the realm of energy, and the object could "believe" that the pull of the planet is in a different direction, or of a different strength, than it actually is. The spacetime manifold may not change, but the object could still change its movement if what it "believes" is so strong that it overules the physics of the spacetime. It is through this sort of reasoning that I think underpins all of the physics-defying phenomena of the Cosmere.
  7. (source) This is better than the UK TWoK cover, but not as good as almost any of the other UK covers. This however seems to be quite a big spoiler! Clearly a man in Shardplate, but what is that he is holding? A spear? Perhaps a Shardspear? Hi Kaladin, nice to see you on both covers. It is worth noting that the source is just Amazon UK, I can't find an Orion press release or source anywhere to confirm it or get a higher-res copy. This may not be final, its hard to tell.
  8. If there is a big event, I will try and come. I've always wanted to go to a midnight release, but plane tickets from the UK to Utah aren't cheap. If there was a mini-con, and I got to spend more than just an evening with all you lovely people I would certainly make the effort!
  9. I am unsure whether the God Beyond means Adonalsium, or an actual supernatural deity like the Judeo-Christian god (Yahweh, Elohim etc). The concept of the God Beyond might have come from Harmony and the words of founding, which might suggest that it is Adonalsium. But the sound of the Unknown God makes me less certain, Do we have WoB that the two terms refer to the same thing? One of the things I really like about the Cosmere is that it can be interpreted in a completely mechanistic, atheistic way if one would want to. Brandon hasn't answered if God exists there or not. ANYWAY The excerpt was good. My thinking is that we won't see Hoid on screen in a recognisable way - maybe more like the Well of Ascension, where Hoid is acting in the background (stealing Lerasium) but we don't see him "on stage".
  10. You guys have a British hardcover for the way of kings? Those are really rare! I had to track one down through ebay. ...why do you have 5 copies of the way of kings between you? I mean, its awesome, but I didn't realise it was that awesome...
  11. Brandon never fails to amaze me, The idea of telling the assassination of Gavilar from five different points of view? That is so awesome. I would think that we will see dalinar's drunken perspective in his book. Might we see gavilar's own POV? Darn, I'm now looking forward to SAs 3, 4 and 5...
  12. Sorry, you're right. But is did get moved over very quickly. I think that this is one of the more important quotes we've seen so far from WoR. A Lighteyes that believes that the Voidbringers!! And a shardbearer at that. How does Amaram know about the voidbringers? What exactly is his connections to the ghostbloods? Jasnah has spent years researching the voidbringers, I want to know what makes Amaram so sure. Also it changes how I see an Amaram/Kaladin interaction going. To Kaladin, Amaram is clearly a bad guy - but he appears that he will be a good guy in the long term, especially to Dalinar. That is going to be a very interesting relationship...
  13. Hi all In a comment thread on Reddit, Brandon gave a small excerpt from WoR in Morse code. I know this is quite old, but I hope this is still new to some people http://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/1ednoc/i_met_brandon_sanderson_umistborn_last_night_ive/c9zi0jh?context=3 Brandon said: Which apparently translates to: ...which is kinda important. Amaram knows about the Voidbringers! Anyway, hope this is new information for some of you, I haven't seen it discussed in this forum yet.
  14. Since I listen to audiobooks, I can't eat through it as fast as Observer. But, I have listened to it 8 times, at 45 hours each time, and am planning on listening to it twice before WoR comes out. That would make 10, which is of course an important number! But if I hadn't restrained myself, it might be upwards of 20. In all honesty, its slightly ruined most fantasy for me, because the readers are almost never as good as Kramer and Reading, and all other worlds feel flat and boring compared to Roshar.
  15. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=698#1 The way Brandon describes him as "the original holder of the Shard Honor". That raises a question as to whether he held the shard of Honour when it was shattered, or whether he has "long since departed", as is hinted in the Highstorm scene with Kaladin. I don't have my book to hand to give a better reference.
  16. Has that been confirmed? I saw some interesting speculation that Tanavast was not the person who was killed by Odium, but had previously given up the Shard to another. Tanavast definitely held Honor at some point though,
  17. I agree, and think that inevitably different radiant orders will have different roles because of their differing abilities. I reckon that the Stonewards have the Surge of Travel, and that is why they and the Windrunners are the ones who could get to a remote village not long after it was attacked by the Midnight Essence. It might also be that those two orders are the only ones to have abandoned their Blade and Plate in a way that was accessible to the common people. I would use Windy's logic, that the Plate glows with the colour of the Radiant order, to say that all Radiants have at least Plate. I think all the Radiants are front line soldiers, but they can still vary in function. Some, like the Windrunners, might act as light cavalry in Earth history, while other Orders fulfill roles like heavy foot, heavy cavalry and archers.
  18. Comment! On the post! Awesome!
  19. Completely agree with this, as a short piece it evokes brilliant character while still being filled with Realmatic goodies.
  20. My thought was that they can choose to speak any language they want by interfacing with the Cognitive Realm, but that they still physically speak the words in whatever language they choose. Rock would think that they have no Horneater accent when they are speaking his language, and Kaladin would think that they have no accent when they are speaking Alethi.
  21. This is my thought. Any language they need they can access Cognitively. Taln hasn't been around for 4506 years, and the languages must have dramatically changed (hence needing to translate the Dawnchant).
  22. I think I have an accent, even from my own PoV. But anyway, I trust that Brandon knows what he's doing, and he doesn't repeat things lightly.
  23. I have just posted my theory about this in the main SA forum!
  24. I was thinking on the "Heralds don't have accents" idea, which has been proposed before. Talenel'Elin is confirmed not to have "a hint of an accent" - Pg 1001, and there is at least one other person described exactly the same way, the Azish-looking man on Pg 746. I was thinking about why that is, and I was getting annoyed at Brandon. "There is no such thing as having no accent", I thought to myself, "that would mean that there is a standard of the language by which to judge! But of course there are no Platonic forms for language ..." Then I stopped, took a moment to consider, and smiled. I think that the Heralds learn languages directly from Shadesmar. Languages exist cognitively, but not physically, and so might live in the Cognitive Realm. There, a language becomes what people think it is. A Herald therefore directly interfaces with any language they need Cognitively, gaining complete fluency and having no accent, as they are channeling the "true" form of the accent. Thoughts?
  25. Also, we have another potential Herald in the guy who had no hint of an accent, the adviser to the king (queen).
