  1. I think there is an extra part of becoming a surgebinder - being extremely good at something. The ardernts say that the Almighty will reward excellence in any field. That is where the idea of a calling comes from. I think this means that you need to follow the primary/secondary divine attributes AND be excellent at something. Kaladin is a master of the spear, Shallan is great at drawing, Jasnah is a great Scholar and Dalinar is a supreme strategist and general. And Szeth... is special
  2. I have been thinking for a while, but is it possible that Urithiru is in the horneater peaks? Those mountains were on the west boarder of Alethela. It would be high up, (close to Honor). But one of the things that makes me think this the most is Rock. Rock is more knowledgeable about surgebinding and spren than he lets on. He can see Syl, an honorspren, without her having to make it so. He also knows about Kaladin's powers. In chapter 73, the last camp-fire bridge four have, Rock says Kaladin's abilities are "of the holetental. For him only." When Teft questions this, Rock replies "You don't know for certain I don't know for certain". My guess is that the horneaters are descendants of those who lived in Urithiru and worked with the Radiants. They could see spren, and so were valuable servants. What do you guys think?
  3. Thanks for recognising the UK people
  4. Thanks Crafty Games, I have my hardcover preordered!
  5. Thanks, it has got some useful info! He talked more than I thought he would about spren...
  6. I think it looks cool - it reminds me of an Impressionist painting. A different feel to the Cosmere books, sure, but it is a totally different style. 4/5
  7. This is extremely exciting. I just hope that it comes out in Audiobook, and in the UK. If Michael Kramer or Kate Reading read this, I would be very happy. And ANOTHER MAGIC SYSTEM ON SEL! This shows, in my opinion, that there is far more to magic than we have yet guessed.
  8. Yeah I will do that right away!<div>EDIT: I have completed the first youtube video, http://goo.gl/YkDvA I will probably take longer doing the other parts, I have some work do be getting on with. But it is good fun! </div><div>EDIT AGAIN: I have now completed the second youtube clip, the link is still the same as before. </div>
  9. If you come across something that needs transcribing, let me know and I will do it! Glad to help
  10. Cool, thanks.
  11. I was just wondering how tense should be applied in the wiki - I am editing the Alethkar article, and it is difficult writing the history of Alethkar in the same tense as the most up to date information we have. Is there a rule as to what should be in past tense and what should be in present?
  12. Sounds to me like it could be several different groups: The Ghostbloods - unlikely due to longing for the return of the Radiants when it seems that they are the bad guys. Maybe... The Worldsingers - We don't know that much about what they want. It sounds too partisan for them, I think, The Whatever-they-were-called-that-Teft-belonged-to - Sounds like the right motive, but I thought they were all dead? Maybe some survive. The Seventeenth Shard - Likely, as (Slight cosmere spoilers?) but it does not seem like a sentiment that they would hold In conclusion: We are building a Consensus, please ask later ...
  13. In some previous ramblings (here) I came to the conclusion that Awakening is end negative. Partially because Breaths are conserved, but also because Awakening does not draw on the "power of creation". Comparing this to the two known end-positive manifestations of Investiture, Allomancy and Aon Dor, we can see that these both draw upon this external power. Awakening does not. Nightblood seems like an end-negative Investiture because he consumes Breath. But by this logic the act of being born with a Breath is an end-positive manifestation of Investiture on Nalthis. So I'm not sure. The AoL Ars Arcanum certainly seems to suggest that most manifestations of Investiture can be classified as end positive, neutral and negative. But we still don't know enough about the unified system of magic to label everything else. I am still confused about Foci; it is fairly well established how a focus works in regards to an end-positive Investiture, but not in regards to end neutral and end negative. In conclusion... Awakening is probably end-neutral?
  14. Heredity works differently on Roshar than on Earth, at least for humans. This much is well established. What I was thinking about the different races was that are their existence caused by the way heredity works on Roshar? Or are both caused by a third thing? Also I have thought about eye colour in regards to heredity. Are there eyes that are hard to classify as light or dark? Or does there exist a sharp boundary that separates light eyes from dark? And would this apply all over Roshar? Just a side thought I suppose.
  15. "I will protect those who cannot protect themselves" - The Second Ideal of the Windrunners. "Speak again the ancient oaths, and return to men the Shards they once bore" - The vision of the Almighty. It seems fairly obvious from these that the most important words a man can say are the five ideals of the Knights Radiant. Once spoken by an individual, they become a full Radiant. That is my extrapolation from the above Ideal of the Windrunners, which grants Kaladin greater ability with Stormlight. The second quote from the Almighty suggests that once an individual speaks the oaths, then they will be granted Shards.
  16. I am so psyched. Just the promotional art looks awesome. And it has a release window of Fall 2013. I just tweeted (@chke90) from the tweet button on the page and this was sent! https://twitter.com/#!/chke90/status/181325552928567296 That's a long time to wait. Coop would be great with other 17th Shard members!
  17. I suppose it is double Nicrosil (most interesting Twinborn?) Just throught it looked pretty cool :P

  18. Thanks, where was this quote from? Haven't read it before. This has disproved my original hypothesis. This now leaves more Hemalurgic powers unaccounted for.
  19. Thanks Kurkistan, I missed the Hybrid reference in the RPG. I agree with your assessment that Electrum stores Temporal Allomancy. This leaves four metals Hemalugically unknown... Am looking forward to the next full Mistborn Trilogy! PS. I think Hybrid is a cop-out; it would be very hard to come up with a name that properly describes those metals. The reasons given, the balance of essential elements of life, don't make sense with the word hybrid. Perhaps the life metals, but for now I will stick with Necessital. At least for me
  20. I was thinking about the Soulbearer ferring issue. The RPG has no way of storing in a nicrosilmind; only transferring. Perhaps a Soulbearer ferring is quite useless, like an Aluminium gnat, but I doubt it. I reckon a nicrosil ferring has other abilities, but they are very interesting and so Brandon hasn't told us what it is. Or we might find out when the tAoL RPG expansion comes out, since that will deal with Ferrings. Perhaps in this they will only gain power from Nicroburst mistings.
  21. 1. I think this is an in-game balance issue. It stops the Inquisitors being to powerful. 2. Standard Inquisitors have this anomaly too. I think this must be an error. With the above, I think they stopped Inquisitors having pewter allomancy because of their feruchemy. But their feruchemy is wrong. Looking at the inquisitor Vin and Elend kill at the start of the HoA, it has 5 steel spikes and 4 bronze ones (and a pewter one). This would give all the basic 8 allomantic powers, and probably double pewter. Also, I think it was said somewhere that not all inquisitors have the same spikes. So maybe some have those described in the RPG. But I think Marsh is off. PS I think it is funny they added Marsh at the start of HoA, not the end. By the end, he is described as having over 20 spikes. I've been trying to count them all, and havn't yet reached 20. That Marsh would be very powerful. Game-breakingly so.
  22. I just got the feeling that Harmony was generically giving Wax a bit of help. But perhaps a pewter earring fuelled by Harmony makes more sense. I like the theory a lot.
  23. I was thinking this the other day. It seems theoretically possible, but even if anyone had stored up that much mass with iron, it would not be able to be sustained for long. And you'd have to have some pretty huge metalminds.
  24. I was thinking this too. When I asked Brandon if there were 50 metals, I explained I got that number from 16 natural metals, 16 Lerasiumatic Metals, 16 Atiumatic Metals and Learsium and Atium themselves. I got the impression that he said nearly to that logic more so than the number 50. And if there are many more metals, then the Metallic Arts are hugely more complicated. Being a Mistborn would be incredibly powerful. Maybe that's why he has got rid of them (at least until the Urban trillogy.)
  25. So I have been thinking about Investiture since the AoL Ars Arcanum, and have come to several conclusions. But these are just speculation, so I would like to see what you guys think. Investiture is the power of creation Investiture is the power of creation that Brandon has mentioned with regards to Aon Dor and Allomancy. He said that both of these are conduits for the power of creation. And we know that both of these are end-positive, and so the power that end positive magic gains is from the power of creation. And we think that a manifestation of Investiture if synonymous with magic, and thus the power of creation is Investiture. Investiture powers Shards We know Nicrosil stores Investiture, and that it might be possible to store the Mists or the Well of Ascension in Nicrosilminds (from the RPG). Thus, the power of a Shard is Investiture. Investiture is general Again from the RPG, it says that a Soulbearer Ferring could gain Investiture from Duralumin and Nicrosil Allomancy. This suggests that Investiture is general across the Metallic Arts, and as we have seen the same power source powers Aon Dor and Allomancy, and so Investiture is general. Theory: Shards are manifestations of Investiture that do not require foci This is less formed, but it is my guess that Shards draw on Investiture to do all that they do. They are a more pure force of magic than those humans use (excluding Ati, Leras, Sazed etc. obviously.) Thus they have direct access to Investiture, and can allow humans access to that same power through manifestations of investiture that require foci. This just seems to follow from the above three conclusions. So instead of foci, do they have Intents? The classification system in tAoL Ars Arcanum So I am going define the classifications given as follows End-positive: Draws on external Investiture. End-neutral: Transfers Investiture End-negative: Investiture is lost. Evaluating magic on Nalthis Awakening seems obviously to be end-neutral, since no Breaths are lost. We see Nightblood consuming Breaths, and as such Nightblood is end-negative. But this implies that the act of receiving a Breath, which so far as we know is the same as being born, is an end-positive Investiture. Which seems odd. But if we assume that Breaths are Invested by Endowment upon birth, then this ceases being a problem, since we have said above that a Shard has direct access to Investiture. Evaluating magic on Roshar This seems least clear. Surgebinding seems to gain power, and so is end-positive. Except it does not draw directly on Investiture, as Brandon described for Allomancy and Aon Dor, but instead draws on Stormlight. So perhaps the act of infusing gems with Stormlight is an end-positive act of Investiture, and Surgebinding is end-negative. But I am not sure. Wow, that seems much shorter than I had imagined now it is typed out. Anyone got thoughts?
