She shook her head. Don’t think about that.
Wait, was that Shoe? And…. the stoat, and that other girl? Leaving? Maybe she could join them. She wasn’t going to be of use here, and she’d rather not be lonelier than she had to. She ran after them and grabbed onto the stoat so she wouldn’t get left behind, but she couldn’t think of anything to say.
She looked around instead, noticing the sky for the first time.
She’d never seen the sky before. It was so….. big. Open. And kind of terrifying.
She wondered if one day Safren would see the same sky after the trials were over.
“I didn’t know it was blue,” she remarked to nobody in particular.
