OC just means 'original character' and in my experience is mostly used when someone is talking about a character they've created entirely on their own (with their own world and story). I also think it's more common to refer to your characters as OC's within the artist space, but take that with a grain of salt.

Oh.
For some reason I always thought it was applied to characters put into other people's stories through fanfiction or fanart or whatnot. Like, there's a need to specify "even though this is in the world of this other thing I made this character, it's not from the original story."
Grated, my experience in this stuff is severely limited, but that's where I've heard the term OC being used the most.
