    Zira glanced at him. “Hush, spirit, or I’ll taste you next.” “They all do…mm.” Zira paused, watching him out of the corner of her eye. “Maybe I’ll go find a prisoner. We don’t really need any of them.”

    Xi bounced out of a puppy, giggled, then went into a different one, ran in a circle, then popped out…and flew into Elan.

    Zira shrugged. “Each to their own. I could go for a tribute…hmm, now there’s an idea.”

    Rue’s eyes seemed to get colder, if that was possible. “If I’m right, you’ll probably end up trying to kill me. Safer to keep my distance.”

    She started bouncing between the puppies again.

    Zira ignored the floss, sucking noisily instead. “Mice always have more fur than you’d expect. It really is a pain. Humans are easier.”

    “Okay!” That was probably smart. It didn’t make sense to run into a situation like this one alone. Legal help would be good, unless…storms, they probably already had a team there. “Are you sure, though? I don’t want to be a bother, and we won’t be telling them anything they don’t already know.”

    Zira snorted. “Grow up, little boy. Not a single death. Not one.” She yawned, looking at a screen. Her saliva was faintly pink. A piece of white fur was stuck between her teeth.

    GMHQ Zira wandered over to Elan Jr.’s station, wiping her bloody hand on her dress. “You might be worse than your old man. These games are a mess.”
