  1. Covia watched and listened, still staying mostly submerged in the water, now including her mouth and nose. Breathing felt more comfortable to her this way.
  2. "What do you mean? What about it could spread?"
  3. "Escape it. Is that what you're doing?"
  4. "It's 3 to the power of 9. That's how the Sanctuary is subdivided, anyway, 3 groups of 3 groups of 3... and so on." "Oh. So when your people die, they just..." She trailed off, looking concerned.
  5. "The world? The world is huge. But there aren't 8 billion of us. There are 19,683."
  6. Covia looked aghast.
  7. "But what if you miss people?" Covia turned to Aria. "What about you? How many people are there where you come from?"
  8. Covia went quiet, taking in the onslaught of ideas and implications.
  9. She still looked completely shocked. "How do you keep track of everyone?"
  10. Covia's eyes went wide. "Woah. That's crazy! How can that many people live in one place?"
  11. "Sure, I guess. We call it renewal, though. Hm..." She kicked her legs idly. "How many people are there on your world?"
  12. She paused to think. This wasn't something she'd really had to explain to anyone before, so she thought about how it was told to her. "When we die, our souls live on and return to the Sanctuary. There we gain new bodies, new selves, new lives. We are renewed."
  13. She nodded.
  14. "It's... where our souls get renewed. And supposedly where we originally came from, too."
  15. "The mother? We don't have mothers." She laughed. "You people are like fish! Except you don't lay eggs, I guess. Huh. So then, the babies just comes out?"
  16. "Is that not how it works for you?"
  17. "I appeared in the Sanctuary, like anyone."
  18. Covia pursed her lips. "I have scales and gills and live underwater. And also hair and lungs." She eyed Aniya like the other woman had said something disturbing. "And we don't lay eggs. Not sure what you mean by a live birth, though."
  19. "Mammalian?" She sounded out the word slowly. "I'm not sure what that means."
  20. "Really? That's so weird!" Covia watched the creature and giggled. "It looks so silly!"
  21. "Huh." She thought for a moment. "Well, I do know that we breathe differently from the fish. We have gills," sure pulled on her robe a bit to expose the side of her neck, demonstrating hers, "mostly like theirs, but also big muscles and compartments in our chests that push the water around. We call them lungs. I guess you two don't have either of those?"
  22. "Covia." "Maybe? I never learned that much about biology."
  23. "What's your name?"
  24. "Seems like it!" Her smile returned.
