"Huh. Are all the parents... qualified to do that? I know some people who l definitely wouldn't want raising the younglings."

"And they raise you, and everything? There's a group of my people that do that, but they have to train and learn a lot to do it well."

"That sounds kind of like the elders. They're pretty much in charge. There are 81 of them, one out of every 243."

"What's it like to have parents? You mentioned your mother. It sounds like she was important to you."

After a bit, Covia stopped examining the faceless person. She turned back to Aria and Aniya. "I have a question."

"Nope. Didn't he have one before, though?"

"I think he is." Covia pointed out his rising and falling chest.

"Hey, are you alive?"

"Woah, that's new." Covia examined the strange opening.

"Yeah." She transported Samuel to the edge of the pool and pushed him up onto dry ground.

"How fast can humans die in water?"

Covia finally took notice of the situation. "Oh! Uh..." She maneuvered toward Samuel. Although the pool was deeper here than either was tall, she didn't have much trouble lifting him by the waist so his head went above water. @mippo

"Are you gonna swim?" She was making some progress, slowly moving herself around the pool with less-than-coordinated motions of her arms and legs.

She kept working at it, trying to incorporate all of her limbs. Despite the large and flowy nature of her robe, it didn't seem to encumber her much.

"Oh. Well... I think I want to learn it for myself."

"You can swim? How do you do it if you can't breathe underwater?"

"Hmph." She sat on the floor of the pool.

She narrowed her eyes. "I know how to swim!"

Covia was occupied with trying to swim, kicking her legs with little success.

"I want to help you!"

"A product?" Covia had let herself sink completely into the water now, but her words rang out audibly from the water, somewhat louder than her normal voice.
