  1. "Yeah. Helda, I'm so sorry. If I had known what..." He again broke down into tears.
  2. He nearly collapsed again from the relief. "Thank you."
  3. "I'm not lying!" He felt angry, though not at her. At himself, for failing her.
  4. "How can I prove that it's only been a few days? Maybe... I'll talk to the people at the prison? They could explain..."
  5. Tears sprang to his eyes again. "You... really believe that I abandoned you." He somehow seemed to grow ever more weary. "I should have known I'd end up hurting you somehow. I'm sorry. I... should..." His voice cracked.
  6. "How could I possibly not notice an entire year passing? Without you? I counted every moment."
  7. "It hasn't been a year here. Somehow you were there for a year, but I only waited a couple days. I don't understand it..."
  8. "I waited two days after being released. I'd rather that than risk extending the time. I couldn't sleep, couldn't really do anything, but I waited. But... something's wrong. They did something to you in there. Did you really spend a year...?"
  9. "I'm not! I swear, I'm not. I wouldn't... wouldn't leave you."
  10. "...What?" He stared at her in shock. "It's been three days... Did they change time somehow?"
  11. "Three... days?"
  12. "I didn't leave you. We were forced apart for a little while. I... wish I could have done something..."
  13. Tayen appeared at the door, eyes red, posture weary. "Helda... can we talk, please? I need... need to understand..."
  14. Tayen collapsed, sobbing himself. He had done something horribly wrong, he must have. Where had he failed? He had tried so hard...
  15. Tayen slowed down. He looked and sounded exhausted. "Helda, I love you. Please come back."
  16. "I've been waiting outside for you since I got out. They wouldn't let me go in, but they said it'd only be a few days at the most, so I just stayed. I'm sorry. Helda, please..."
  17. "Helda! I'm sorry I didn't come in after you... I was worried that trying would get me detained and we'd be apart for longer."
  18. "Helda?" He ran after her.
  19. "Hm. We had a bet on whether or not you'd look happy. Looks like I won." He led her out... And Tayen was right outside, waiting for her. He looked exactly as he had when she had last seen him, holding her as she grew weak and fell unconscious.
  20. A guard came to her cell, and unlocked it. "You're being released. Your time is served."
