    Morning.

    I did not sleep tonight, though I couldn't tell you exactly why.

    It's very quiet here.

    There are still all sorts of cracks, but I've tried my best to avoid them. They'll stay there, though. Each time I brush up against one it scares me.

    I say I'm better, but I can't help but worry that the only reason I seem less broken is that right now there's very little water to leak through those cracks.

    I'm not safe, I'm just hiding.

    "I will not condemn you or the child to misery." He sighed. "I cannot force you to do anything, of course, but I ask that you consider hope and trust."

    He gently squeezed her hand again, giving her a warm smile. They continued to walk.

    "I don't know. I don't know how I'd feel. It didn't happen."

    He sighed. "I wouldn't have thought you had done anything to me. I would have thought I had done something to you to cause it."

    "Probably. If I had never understood why things had changed, I'd probably blame myself."

    "I don't know. I imagine at some point you would realize that less time had passed than you thought."

    "Tempt you?"

    "I don't know. I would probably have gone after you until I could understand."

    "You didn't do that."

    "It hurt for a bit, because I was confused. I didn't understand what had happened to you. But it wasn't a horrible thing. I'm okay."

    "I forgive you because it wasn't your fault that you were in that situation, and that you believed I had abandoned you. You did nothing horrible to me, you just needed to recover and adjust. And I love you."

    "For what it's worth, I forgive you completely. I don't think it's something that requires forgiveness at all, but I'll do it if you're having a hard time forgiving yourself."

    He gave her hand a squeeze. "Either way, you're not to blame. For any of it. Something very cruel was done to you, and you hurt from it, and you needed and need time to recover. It's okay."

    "Really? It didn't hurt more?"

    "Not easier. I imagine it hurt you very badly to believe otherwise. But it was more logical."

    "And that is the part of you that ignores the loss. It hangs on to something even if it may no longer exist, or never have existed at all."

    "Maybe that was just the part of you that still hoped. That still believed that it could somehow make sense. Our minds do have a way of defying the observable truth."
