  1. I've been trying to fix a problem for two hours, and now I'm done and it's past midnight so time to share!

    The story:

You see, about two hours ago I realized something for the first time: library cards can EXPIRE. So, the audiobook I was listening to (Elantris) had just finished its loan period. This normally wouldn't be a problem, because it's on hoopla where as long as you are under a certain amount of loans for the month you can just check it out again. But for some ODD REASON, it was telling me that something was wrong with my library card. After spending a while trying to figure out where the problem was, I finally identified that my card had expired five days ago.

So now, I was unable to check out the book and it wasn't available in the other library that I have a card for. So naturally, I look up how to renew my library card. And turns out, you need to physically go to a library location with your card and ID and stuff to get it renewed. Only thing is, I wanted to listen to the book now, because it's a good book and that's how I fall asleep.

What this lead to was an enormous rabbit hole of going between library websites and seeing if I could get a library card remotely (I couldn't). But it turns out there was an option for an online-only library card that I could get instantly. So now I have that, and it will never be used again once I renew my actual card.

Why is this a thing? Why do they expire? Most of all, why do you need to renew them in person? So many questions, so few answers. Thankfully, my heart can now rest and I can listen to my audiobook peacefully, content with the result of a job well done.

TLDR: I got angry that I couldn't listen to my book because my library card expired, so I researched for an hour and a half and ended up making a second partial-access card for the same library so I could listen to it tonight as I go to sleep.

Still TLDR: Library card expired, me sad. New card of questionable legality, me happy.

Happy Ookla Season to you all, and see you tomorrow. (Later today?)
