  1. Haly stumbled back. Not again… Why does it always end like this? This is why you left. You can’t help him now. Then tears. Haly returned to a seat, hugged her knees, and sobbed. The tingling she’d been feeling spread, and she didn’t care. So naturally it would make things worse. (three inches of water on the floor already, and rising swiftly. It’s all running off her skin, but not coming from her. Like the space just around her is admitting it.)
  2. Haly started to panic. “What can we do? What can I do?” See, Tors, he’s dying. He’s dying and I can’t do anything. Do I have to do this again? “Don’t die!” Haly rushed over, hysterical. “Don’t die, please.”
  3. Thanks, Tors. Still unconvinced but willing to put it aside, Haly looked around. “What’s going on?”
  4. Remember when Karden woke up? That was my fault. And when the library filled up with marshmallows? That was my fault too. I’m even too unstable to live in the one place I actually can be useful in. The tingling became almost unbearable. ”That’s a cool story.” Haly could feel her voice waver and hoped the woman didn’t notice.
  5. You don’t get it. I can’t do stuff like that. You need Thaidakar—he does interdimensional stuff—not me. The tingle returned in her fingers as her spirits sank. “A Stone One? I sense a story here.”
  6. Bowls. Popcorn butter. Chocolate in the shape of a marshmallow. “Edmund?”
  7. Nayka sniffed. “She’s hurt,” she wailed. “And she can’t walk and I don’t know what to do and I’m scared.” She broke down crying and grabbed Whist’s knees.
  8. Don’t I hope you know that’s affirmative?
  9. Didn’t I without doubt tell people I was sorry for killing their platypuses?
  10. Doesn’t ANYBODY suspect me?
  11. I am welcoming all the little tiny things that live in water.
  12. The mountains don’t care anymore. They’re happy.
  13. Kealie reclined back on Eej, watching the stars and constellations. She didn’t know them, but she liked to make her own. A snake… a river… a jar, catching the river’s flow and overflowing with stars… a perfect square… Eej conveyed something to the tune of an insane notebook… Kealie grinned. I’m over my irrational fears. Most of them. She caught something similar to a laugh and grinned again. I’m glad I picked you. Even if you did slingshot me here.
  14. You did that. Remember? Haly watched TAAron floating, puppeted by the man. I just find marshmallows. I doubt marshmallows will be very helpful now, she added bitterly. Unless you want a s’more.
  15. No. You need somebody else—Thaidakar or Bookwyrm or Calano. I’m just a wind chime who flies through walls with a penchant for marshmallows. The tingling intensified with Haly’s shame.
  16. Haly stifled her derisive laugh. “I wish I actually had some useful ability like that. I’m not sure. I was trying to Find him—TAAron—and then I was here.” Is that good, Tors?
  17. “Yeah.” Haly’s stomach sank. “Is there anything I could do?”
  18. Haly blinked. “No idea what that is. As an answer… um, I find stuff a lot. Mostly marshmallows, but hey.” Shrugs “Want a marshmallow? Or a chocolate shaped like a marshmallow? Also, thanks for helping him.” Points at TAAron
  19. Completely unconcerned, Haly replied, “I’m just here for my friend.” She gestures to TAAron. “My name is Haly. Nice to meet you.”
  20. Haly nodded, grateful there was something she could do, and went to talk to said people.
  21. Kealie nodded. “Do you have any idea what those disturbances might be?”
  22. Fine, okay. Haly reached out, imagined a trident, and tried to Find it.
  23. “No, that was just yesterday. Or… today. Whatever the day was right before this night.”
