    He nodded slowly and did a quick examination. “Her hearing is off— unless she’s just distracted. She does seem very distracted.”

    He nodded. “Anything specific I’m looking for?” “Marshmallows,” she replied, staring with fascination at the ceiling.

    “Oooh, doctor,” she said absently. The doctor was a man in his late twenties. His room was pretty much a standard doctor room. “What can I do for you?”

    “Tam!” He stepped forward and put his hands on her shoulders. “Take a breath. Calm down. It’s okay. Just tell me.”

    He frowned. “What’s the Thread, then? Why are you so secretive about it?”
