    Bat relaxed. Without the constant knowledge that Rose was on his back, he felt much more at ease. And with the compass, he could go anywhere he wanted. He was free now…. as long as he stayed with Gaioh. But he liked Tam. And Cricket. It was nice having a little unit he could trust and take care of. He really liked it. A ninja fell through the ceiling.

    “Yep! Really fast!” That sounded very nice. And safe. And warm. Bat yawned.

    She yelped. “Hey,” Bat protested half heartedly. “Careful.” Rose looked away, gritting her teeth. “sounds good,” Bat said. He certainly wouldn’t mind one of those.

    Rose scowled back. Gaioh was confused, but had a strange feeling that all this somehow has to do with him. AAAUGH I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS ITS LITERALLY THE WORST AURGH take ur time

    Bat and Gaioh both stood up. “Bat,” Rose warned. “Don’t you dare leave me like this.” He hesitated, but walked over and gently unclasped the compass necklace. “Hey, HEY! You can’t take that! Bat, you’re not really gonna strand me here!” He couldn’t look at her. “It’s for your own good. If you follow us, you could get hurt.” But it wasn’t really for her own good. He knew that, and maybe she did too. I think I’m okay for now. Thanks.

    Dang Tam Rose yelped. "Bat!" "Tam," Bat started, but his words died in his throat. He looked away and messed with the buckle on his bag. "Okay," Rose shrieked. "Okay! Let me go!"

    She looked at him flatly, unimpressed. "Mmhmm."

    "I was considering it," she corrected. "In my anger." She glanced at Bat, who pretended to be paying attention to something entirely different. "But this is a good deal. All I have to do is babysit this idiot babysitting another idiot, and I get to travel around the world." She flicked a Nullite compass-looking device around her neck. "So I decided against killing either. For now. But next time Bat slips up..."

    "And what if I'm not?" She shrugged. "You gonna kill me for being an inconvenience?" Bat tried to shush them. Rose, however, noticed them with interest.

    Yes she does "Yes!" Rose put her free hand on her hip, casually pointing her rapier in Tam's direction. "It wouldn't be a loss. They're both nothing but problems."

    they were gonna nap anyway The woman who was apparently Rose swept them both looks of contempt. "What happened to your tattoos?" She chided. "And isn't that the Narrator? What the heck are you doing with a Narrator??" "I, uh..." "It's incredible you're not dead! Or maimed, or worse! And don't think I'm letting you off the hook for leaving him behind." She pointed to Gaioh. "He could easily have slipped away completely, out into the ocean and away forever. I was this close to shooting both of you dead from up in that tree over there. This close." He hung his head. "I'm sorry. But Tam was hurt and---" "You left Gaioh to save the Narrator?" She laughed darkly. "Oh, this is getting rich."

    It worked! Bat lay down on the sand. "We should get some sleep. And I'll--" "Bat!" Shrieked a young woman, stalking out of the forest with a Nullite rapier. "WHAT are you DOING?" He sat up again. "Oh... Rose." He didn't sound happy at all. A vaguely humanoid shadow stood on the drawbridge. "Of course," they rasped. "I wouldn't miss this for the world. Please, come inside."

    He did so. "Thanks." "Okay. Here, take off your--" He yawned, then sighed. "Why'd you let Gaioh give me three of those leaves?"
