  1. “Yeah. But not the upper levels high enough where there won’t be a lot of Nullite in the air.”
  2. How dare you stalk me, dear in-person friend. You know who you are. Nerd.
  3. “Uhhhh…” Bat fidgeted. “We… either need to find my compass or get to the upper levels.”
  4. Bat grinned, picked her up, and opened the lock. Rose hurried out. “Thank you.”
  5. BOO, BE TERRIFIED.
  6. Bat scuttled through. She has tattoos. We’ll have to break the bars or something. Rose watched in utter fascination, not without a little disgust.
  7. “She never means anything,” Bat said happily, coming over to the bars. Rose joined him and Cricket, determined to stay silent as promised.
  8. She looked up from the poem she was writing. “Hmm?”
  9. “It’s— can you just ask intellect for an advance and a couple days off, please?”
  10. “She’s not… she didn’t mean it,” he protested. I don’t like her either, he said, not without some measure of guilt. But… we can’t leave her here.
  11. He shrugged offhandedly, concern flashing in his eyes. “Something like that.”
  12. “I Narrated it away. It’s your foundational quest, after all! No fair Narrating a foundational quest’s success! After that, what’s a character to be?” He hesitated. “But… we can’t leave her here like this. What if they torture her?” ”Please,” Rose begged, coming over to the bars. “I won’t say a word.”
  13. “Can you talk to him for me? Might mean getting rid of me for a while.” “Ahh. Thanks, kid.”
  14. “No, wait!” Rose stood. “I’ll shut up, I promise. Please don’t leave me here.”
  15. “I, uh……… if… if you promise to turn me right back.” Rose snorted. “Bootlicker.” Bat turned red. “Don’t you wanna get out of here?” “I never said you shouldn’t do it.”
  16. Aw, man. I don’t like her. Having not been paying attention, he spoke to Aela. “You can talk to Intelligence, right?”
  17. “You may like to change your skin, if you are capable of doing so.” She shifted, growing shorter and younger. Tattoos sprouted across jet skin, and long black hair grew to the middle of her back. “I dunno. Something that could break the bars. Or a key, maybe.” He shuddered at that thought. She turned into a crab, but it took constant feedback to stay a crab.
  18. I don’t like Aela, he said flatly. Also, which one’s Aela?
