    Rose swore. “Bat! Are these things venomous?” Bat looked at Tam, nervous. “Are they?” Bat’s Author figured she could, assuming nobody cared all that much for continuity.

    She yelped and crushed it with her boot. “Hey, Tam,” she yelled, assuming her to be the source of the snakes, “You’re stupid.”

    He smiled nervously. “Thanks. Uh… so what do we do now?” She rolled her eyes ands drew her rapier.

    Bat bit his lip. “Gotcha. I’ll… figure it out. Sorry.” — “UGH,” she complained, then stood up and stomped on all of them woth her thick leather boots, twined woth stiff Nullite threads.

    He hugged her back tightly. “What do you think of me?” He whispered. “I mean really.” — She scowled at it. “What?? I’m keeping my raxing thoughts to myself. You bite me, and I’ll stomp you and your babies and every snake I ever see. After I call Bat over to fix me. You know he will.” Rose dropped her head into her hands. “I’m arguing with a stupid snake now.”

    Idk, the one they were hanging out at. I think so. “I… don’t know,” Bat said. “That was… absolutely terrifying.” Rose nodded and sat down on the sand, eyebrows knitting together thoughtfully.

    “Read it. Later. Keep Rose around and she can’t—“ “That’s enough,” Second Rose declared, appearing out of thin air. She grabbed Lay Bug’s collar, teeth clenched. Lady Bug stared her in the eyes for a moment, then threw back her head and laughed. “You’re really going to pretend? As if this isn’t exactly what you—“ Cricket, Rose, Tam, and Bat were dumped back on their beach. Lady Bug was gone, Second Rose was gone, and there was no trace of Nullite in the air. In case Tam wants to check, it’s the exact same beach.

    She tossed back her head and cackled. “She won’t let me go. Never, never. I’m the core. The original. She can’t c-c—-“ She choked, unable to force the word out. “She can’t get to me. The others, though— DON’T TOUCH THE OTHERS. DON’T LET THEM NARRATE YOU.” Bat jumped again.

    “Don’t trust me,” she whispered. “This wasn’t a part of the plan. I didn’t realize how dangerous it was here. I may be crazy, but the other me’s— don’t trust the other me’s! DON’T TRUST THE OTHER ME’S!” The cavern seemed to shake at her voice. Bat jumped when she yelled that, and grabbed Tam’s shoulders, pulling her away. Before he did, Lady Bug pressed a small piece of paper into her hand.

    Lady Bug’s head snapped up. “Tam. I heard you coming— saw you coming— knew you were coming.” The rock disappeared into her sleeve and she stood slowly, stepping toward the bars. “We don’t have long. A few posts, perhaps, no more.”
