    do you ever feel lonely and like nobody cares about you even though you know lots and lots of people care about you way more than you deserve but you're a greedy idiot and you wished they cared more and you wish it felt real and you wish you had somebody irl to talk to and hug and cry with and just somebody who cared about you enough to be there even though that's stupid because obviously everyone's got their own lives and it's not like they even have the ability to just uproot everything just for me because that'd be stupid of them and it's a stupid emotion but I just wish I had somebody here but I don't i'm just all alone with a bunch of pixels on screens that say they care about you but pixels can't care about you only people can and I don't have any of those and i

    Bat kind of agreed with her. The memory of how it had felt made his stomach twist uncomfortably. But... but there wasn't another choice. He popped the cork and downed the contents, feeling the fire spread through his veins. He Shoved again, and the wall crumpled and fell into the hidden tunnel with a resounding BANG. Wow. He hadn't expected it to work that quickly. "I am an Author. I watch everyone. And I still think you should do something menacing." Xanther folded his arms and regarded Rebus with a look of disapproving superiority. Snow, a little boy around five or so, answered the door. She looked down at her hands, letting the silence stretch for several moments. "I don't know who I am," she said softly. "I worry I'm nothing but a shadow of you. Maybe if I were a character, and if I knew pain, I could be... something else, at least." Rose nodded. "Yeah."

I would encourage you to seek out Gail.” She nudged a rock with her toe. “I’m thinking of removing my Thread awareness. Not permamently. Probably. But… for a while.” “No, wait,” Rose said. “Rebus, can you give me— hypothetically— weird tattoos? That would do stuff?”

He reached into his bag and pulled out a tiny bottle, glowing with a red substance. He fingered it thoughtfully. “Hmm.” ”My boy, roles are all about perception. You can’t keep coming to these parties like this! You need to look the part. Act the part. Raze some villages, traumatize some children…” he trailed off. “You could use Gail. She doesn’t have much of a place. But her resentment is growing, and I suspect you could…” he grinned. “Heh. Look at me, getting ahead of myself.” Symbol sighed. “Belief. Yes.” Then she turned to Rebus. “For some time now, I’ve been considering something very stupid. And I think you ought to talk me out of it.” He looked up and flinched back, fist tightening around the wolf’s fur. He wore shorts out of the bluish cloth, as well as a raggedy vest. He eyed her nervously, uncomprehending. The wolf nudged him comfortingly. The boy took a deep breath and made a throaty, inquisitive noise. She nodded. “Kind of necessary. Weird that a Narrator woukd have rats, though.”
