  1. I've never played the game, but I did enjoy the story. I really like the "advanced tech" as magic trope, that is always a fun one. As always it was a really well written story.
  2. Alendi was directly influenced by Ruin? Where do we see this? As far as I can see in the epigrams, Alendi began uniting lands in the chaos of the deepness' "attack" on the lands with his friend Kwaan. Eventually Kwaan came to see that Alendi fit the prophecies of the Hero of Ages, and so proclaimed him so and set him on the path. At the end, it seems like he was swept up in the momentum of the movement (which was itself influenced by Ruin with corrupted prophecies), but I don't see Alendi himself being influenced. I think he was just a very powerful Seeker, no need for Hemalurgy One epigram does say that he had "the piercings of the Hero", but that doesn't mean he was influence by Ruin. Sazed had piercings too didn't he? But he was never influenced by Ruin...
  3. I think the distinction between age and any other compounding is the diminishing returns thing. It doesn't take more gold on day 2 to heal as much as you healed on day 1 of your compounding. It does however take more age used on day 2 to return to your day 0 age than it did on day 1... do that for 1000 years and even an "infinite" amount of healing can possibly lead you to times where you need to be less young for a period to keep up the infinite loop in some way. There is also the point that TLR only used 2 Atium Metalminds and we know from reading about Sazed that each metalmind has limited capacity for storage, once they are full you have to use another one for any excess storage. So TLR was almost self limiting by only using 2 Atium Metalminds. Wax used up years of storage in an instant to make himself heavy enough to flatten a building. How quickly would TLR drain the two metal minds on his arm to keep up 1000 years? We don't know, but it was obviously enough to keep himself young for audiences with his non-Steel Ministry members and public appearances. Plus, can you imagine trying to swallow a bracer to burn?
  4. Dying after he finished his masterpiece would definitely fit his crazy profile... The other options was, he used up all of his speed (mental or physical) for that one moment to move Lessie in front of Wax's bullet and he had none left to dodge the next bullet.
  5. Ok, I'll give you that, I just thought that was an interesting quote from the annotations. Thinking back you and Wispsy are correct that Ruin was manipulating things in the previous cycle as well. Brandon has said before that Alendi was one of the very first Allomancers. I take it for granted I guess that when he says that he's not being misleading and saying "Alendi was one of the first allomancers (because he got spiked by a hemalurgic spike making him a Seeker)", but that Alendi was a true Seeker from birth and was simply snapped by the mists. I like the 16^3 age for the age of the well, it does provide a nice tie-in to "16's". It is interesting to me though that if there were 2 cycles of the Well's power, the first Allomancer's appeared only in 3rd cycle, and then really only after TLR took the Lerasium and made his friends Mistborn.
  6. This is one theory I'm not going to be able to support I think... Even if a calm day becomes a tempest the winds don't spring up in your midst, they sweep down/from somewhere else to blast an area. Maybe humans did enslave them before, but I get the sense from the history that the desolations happened at more frequent intervals prior to the "Last Desolation", and that this time Odium allowed a longer span for people to forget, for the horrors to fade into feared myth and those docile tools of the enemy to be seen as useful since we won the last time around, surely they won't be a threat anymore. I personally haven't gotten the sense that Parshmen were used as slave labor in between any previous desolations... I guess though that we'll have to RAFO
  7. Could be a Peter Rabbit book too... that's where I first went when I saw that
  8. Do we have confirmation that Hoid TOOK a piece of Lerasium when he was in the Well of Ascension chambers? Or anything that he actually did in there other than being there?
  9. I love the idea of an "Ask me about Hoid" shirt, I would totally buy that. I am ok with Ads (though too many might make page loading hard for some people), donation model is cool too. Unlike many people, I would be ok with the "premium" membership idea... I love the books and this is the best forum, and the official one, for Brandon's works, so I'd be ok paying an annual membership to keep it a premium site! Personally I wouldn't buy plushies, but that is just me, I'm sure they would do well w/o me.
  10. Well we do know that Sazed changed Koloss so they are true breeding creatures, so I don't think they are Hemalurgic creatures anymore, but it's never specifically stated that they're not. I'm pretty positive that he left Hemalurgy out of his books. It does say that Lessie was shot and bleeding out and "that is why he (Tan) was able to over power her" in the Prologue, so there doesn't necessarily have to be anything special about him... even coinshots get drunk or careless. Though taking out allomancers is harder to do, the really crazy thing he does is moving Lessie in front of the bullet. That is why my vote is for some sort of speed Ferring, either Zinc or Steel. I agree with the Electrum idea, it would show ALL the possible actions he could have taken, so it does seem unlikely to me.
  11. that works for me too...even if I think they are a bit "scholarly", as I think about it more, he is the only world hopper that we see on all the worlds. I actually had a dream last night that Brandon answered a Q&A at a signing that it was in fact Hoid writing them (is that weird?)
  12. Welcome to the boards! I would say that TLR was just as "crazy" with his metalminds as Miles was, we know from the books that TLR survived beheadings which is something even Miles would have struggled with I think. Yes compounding consumes the metal, but TLR had access to the entire wealth of Atium stored in the Kandra homeland, which was enough Atium to power a few hundred Atium mistings for hours of combat against Koloss, so I don't think it was in short enough supply that he would have been forced to spend 'old time' because of a lack of Atium. Maybe it was just his overconfidence in his abilities that caused TLR to not be constantly burning and storing age the way Miles was constantly burning and storing health in his goldminds, though he obviously used and compounded Gold as much as Miles did given his healing abilities. I think the spear thing was just a "show of force" so to speak by TLR.
  13. I don't know if its a RAFO as to what Hoid was doing in the Well Chamber, but maybe he dropped the bead there in anticipation of someone needing it? I don't believe for a second that TRL would have left it unattended down there. If he somehow lost his powers, how would he have moved the door to get down there in the first place? OTOH, down next the well was the safest place he could put it given the Allomantic strength necessary to move the door. Here is an interesting tidbit that could be relevant to this discussion So it seems like Ruin had only been manipulating the prophecies for this last cycle since TLR took power...
  14. WTG Brandon! At least you now know that we love the book, I know you were a little afraid of what we would think before it was published, at least in other comments I've seen. It's great fun! I think a well written western with a great "flare" to it.
  15. ...or at least gets a Zinc Compounder to invent it for him! Since this is a no spoilers thread, I'll just say I think one of the most powerful combos is one we see in AoL! Steelrunner/Pewterarm would be potent as well... lug around that big vulcan canon and zip to different firing points before your opponents knows what hit them
  16. I just re-read those sections and I don't see anything that indicates he was without his bracers when he was old in the room, so it's a great idea, but pure speculation I think. Unless there is something in WoA or HoA that indicates he would remove metals to get rid of Ruin's voice...
  17. Way to get in the book! Congrats on the real world marriage too, they are tough work but super rewarding
  18. True, but just because he used it intentionally, doesn't mean that Bloody Tan is practicing Hemalurgy. It could be a red herring of sorts... Do we have any idea where the name came from? WE don't find his first victim, "the one that sent Wax hunting" until 2 months later and after Wax is already in the gallery. I also am questioning the Set's involvement in Bloody Tan, only because Wax didn't get the letter to come back to Elendel until that same day he found Bloody Tan's hideout. Don't know...MAYBE they could still be involved, but it seems a stretch, especially since his Uncle seems to indicate that he didn't really want Wax back, but didn't have another option for 'proper' heir.
  19. Great point Eri! though there is still the issue of where would Bloody Tan get Atium since Sazed is the one doling it out or not at his own whims now, or at least that is how I understand it. I do think it has to be more "mundane" than one of the God Metals... either a Mental/Physical Speed Ferring or an Electrum Misting, or Hemalurgically granted one of those powers as manipulated by the Set
  20. Shrug, it could just be that he wanted to feel his age when he was in that room then. Don't know, but given that Brandon is very much into the 'hard' magic thing, this cant' actually be a discrepancy in how the magic is working, it is just a deficiency in our understanding of the magic. Having looked it up, is seems Sazed's explination backs up TLR's AND Mile's version... "limitless supply" and "spend time aged"... I reconcile that by saying, Sazed is just guessing at the end of Mistborn, he doesn't really know what exactly was going on, or how that would apply to other compounders...
  21. I love this interpretation of the theory! I really do believe that the "coincidence" of three realm types and three shadesmar types isn't a coincidence at all and I think this idea fits very well... As to why it looks like an inversion of Roshar...? I think since the map and information are coming from a book about Roshar there is no issue with that. It may well look very similar to any given world when viewed from the point of view of those people accessing Shadesmar. One of my thoughts that I had on this, and in looking at the actual map, I'm not sure how well it pans out, but what if in addition to the inversion of land/sea relative to Roshar, there is also an inversion of the characteristics of a world? We know that Roshar is a broken land, at least the Shattered Plains. What if in Shadesmar, that corresponds to the Expanse of the Broken Sky (inverted)? Similarly, if the Expanse of the Densities is a "world we know" and with inversion Scadrial typically associated with Vapors could be this one? Alternately, my other thought is that if these do break out into three categories as they correspond Physical, Cognitive, Spiritual, I would say that corresponds to the magics of the world and what is used to "power" it. So: Expanse of the Densities would be Scadrial because of the metals that are used for all the different magic systems Sea of Souls would related to Breaths used to power magic on Nalthis Nexus of Truth as a Cognitive world seems to fit Roshar given the "truth" needed to power Soulcasting, as the spren says, "tell us something true" Sea of Lost Lights: if I remember correctly, the magic of the world that Liar of Partinel is set on is a light based magic... I'm torn between Nexus of Imagination and Nexus of Transition for Sel because you can do anything you can imagine/write with AonDor, but the magic of Skai/Dominion seems to transform its practitioners as much as Elantrians need to be transformed before they can use AonDor Thoughts? What do we do with Brandon saying that you shouldn't travel to Shadesmar on Sel? Does that fit into the map at all?
  22. I don't full understand the discrepancy myself, but I overheard Brandon saying something about TLR's body continually trying to snap back to his true age and that having an effect on how much age he was required to expend in a given moment to maintain. if you think about it though it makes sense, sure he might be getting a 1:10 ratio, but in order to maintain youth he has to expend more of his metalmind/allomanctic burning at any one given time to erase 900 years, and that is just to leave him as a 100 year old (with perfect health because of his gold compounding that he was obviously doing as well). Like with Wax, when he makes himself heavy enough to flatten the building by pushing on it, he expends years of stored weight at one time. I would think even with compounding, for age, TLR would eventually have to make new metalminds from true age. OR he might have just wanted to 'feel his age' for a time and feel the weight of the years while he was in his study room, contemplating the past...
  23. Is anyone else worried that Jak is going to get "brought into the tribe" by getting spiked and becoming a Koloss? Obviously Sazed changed the way some of it works, otherwise people couldn't be "Koloss blooded", but do they still have spikes?
  24. I only recently read Eye of the World... Definitely a Sanderson fan 1st! The only reason I'm starting the WoT books is because Brandon is now finishing them... I never wanted to start them since i wasn't convinced that Robert Jordan would finish them, and I hate having an unfinished story!
  25. I personally am really enjoying these Mythwalker chapters. I agree they are very rough, and I'm super glad that many of the ideas were cannibalized to make other stories as those are integral parts of stories we love! The Khell power idea is a really fun magic system though and I'd love to see that expanded upon @Peter - with the 22 chapters of Mythwalker, how far into the plot does that get? Is there a synopsis of the planned rest of the book that we'll get to see?
