soulbearer ferrings. spoilers everywhere.
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Citadel16's topic in Mistborn
They could have been made hemalurgic when they were literally ripped through his skin/arms tearing a piece of TLR soul as they went. Maybe. -
Could be that TLR and the Canton of Inquisition purposefully put trace amounts of metals and alloys into the water supply hoping to find mistings instinctively burning via their Bronze stations to find more fodder for recruitment and/or Inquisitor creation.

Every time Nightblood is unsheathed he starts consuming Investiture. So, in Warbreaker when Vasher unsheathes him and fights against all the Lifeless, it basically drains almost all of Vasher's stored breaths away and he has to fight really hard to force Nightblood back in the sheath to prevent him burning up his last Breaths and Divine Breath and killing Vasher as well.

If it was Nalan, could he have obfuscated his identity somehow? I suppose, but we never ever see him do that in any other context. It really doesn't seem like his style to act as anyone's messenger or to cover up in any way. And, so far as I know, he has no way of seeing the future to know that he would need to disguise himself in this interaction so as not ruin his opportunity to recruit Szeth later. More to the point though, why would he even act in this capacity on behalf of the Diagram or Mr. T? He seems much more above that. Plus the Diagram's agenda isn't stopping or preventing a desolation, it's only goal is the survival of humanity past the coming desolation. And like every good genius dictator, only the Diagram "knows best how to do that" *wink wink*. Nalan's goal is prevent the desolation from happening in the first place by killing, so far as we've seen, only people who have access to regrowth surge. I'd much prefer if it were someone else, who we either haven't seen but is important. Failing that, someone who has more power than we've seen revealed (fabrial) but who we've met before in another context. I do think they are more important than as just a messenger for Mr. T.

It was a thought more than a belief I guess. If she did have a giant block of atium, her steel push would throw her backwards due to it's mass vs. hers since we know she can already push/pull on atium in general. What we don't know I guess is... is there a difference in trying to push/pull on invested metal vs. trying to push/pull on a non-metallic object? I.e. would a 100% invested metal item even have a blue line on which to push/pull? Is it more faint the more investiture is in the item? Faint for a metalmind, non-existent for Nightblood for example. Or do you still see the lines but just are unable to get anything to happen, even if you normally should be able to affect it. I guess I feel like there is a disconnect in allomancy with the different forms that the Shard's power takes (gas/liquid/solid) and Investiture. Per this WoB: it seems like the different forms have different levels of Investiture. I.e. Liquid can give you all the power of a Shard (from what we've seen it has to all concentrate in one place). Gas is like a wildcard metal that burns however your Intent is focused while you're accessing it, while Solid is only supposed to do one thing. Which doesn't make sense to me because just like Water is Water regardless of its state, Atium should be Atium. So liquid Atium in my mind should be the same as physical in terms at least of it's nature and level of investiture. It's fine if the result of that investiure is different depending on the states, but they should all be invested the same in my mind.
-
it could also be the relative size of the bead of Atium to her Allomantic power that allows her to affect it. None of the metals are invested in and of themselves, they are gateways to the Investiture. God metals are supposed to be the physical form of the Shard for Scadrial, so you'd think it was 100% investiture.

Why was Mare sent to the Pits?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Mistborn
It's been a good long while, but wasn't Mare different and mentally broken when she did show up? Who says they DIDN"T spike her to gain the Tin and then still send her to the Pits to torment Kelsier. TLR could/would have had the knowledge to spike without killing probably. -
Soulstone as Splinters
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Bromo_Sapien's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
It could also be part of the physical body of either Devotion or Dominion, like a god metal. There may be WoB on this but I haven't seen one. It could be Devotion related, but it could also be Dominion, since you're essentially forcing your will and your interpretation on another object via Forging. It could also be the "Feruchemy" of Sel, a balance of both. You devote yourself to the history of a thing in order to gain dominion over it. -
Except, wouldn't Szeth then recognize Nalan at the end of WoR and not be as confused as he is in that scene?

First, welcome to the boards, have an upvote! Second, I like this idea a lot. I doubt it will end up being true, but it is at least a cool concept, so I'm going to roll with it for a bit... If you're a compounder, you can burn your metalmind and even though it is Aluminum, it's not going to have the Allomantic aluminum result of depleting your metal stores, it will have the Feruchemical aluminum result of multiplicative "identity", whatever the signature of the Feruchemy stored, being released and therefore more storeable and therefore more tap-able to use on a consistent basis. So if you're theory is correct, and as long as you're burning an Aluminum that is Feruchemically charged by your own Feruchemy, you could reasonably become a Fullborn on a consistent basis. We don't have a clear idea of how "identity" works, but this is as good a one as any so far I think. You still would have to jump start the process by doing Feruchemical storage for each of the metalminds you wanted to compound before you could burn them to compound.

I've been assuming that he had to have figured out Feruchemy some how pretty well before the Mistborn series as he shows up on Sel to be a part of those events. And knowing when and where to be is part of how he uses Feruchemy. That said he may have just been looking into Sel to as noted in the stinger for the 10th Anniversary edition or he may have only figured it out with gaining the bead of Lerasium and was able to use it to do both Feruchemy and Allomancy, but that still means he's been wielding both for a few hundred years real time. Not sure how many Hoid Years that equates to as we don't know precisely how or what his jumps do for his time stream.

Best Twinborn Combinations (Excluding Compounding)
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to DeadFencer's topic in Mistborn
another one I thought of: Allomantic zinc (or Allomantic brass) and Feruchemical duralumin... use the emotional allomantic abilities to shift emotions in groups or individuals while at the same time storing or tapping your Spiritual connection to them. You could rise high as a politician or in a business of any sort by Rioting/Soothing to increase trust and tapping Spiritual connection. You could also probably make a sweet thief by damping down interest with Soothing or Rioting boredom and then storing connection to slip past unnoticed, unremarked. Then if you do get caught, throw some of the above trust and connection at them to get out of it.- 111 replies

Best Twinborn Combinations (Excluding Compounding)
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to DeadFencer's topic in Mistborn
I've often wondered at the possibilities of Allomantic tin with Feruchemical copper and storing all the additional sensory input you're getting from Allomantic tin in the Feruchemical copper for later review. Kind of like a DVR of all sensory input. Not sure if you can do that, but if you combine it with historic memorization techniques like memory palaces and such, you could get a "compounded" memory that is many times more dense than just normal memories.... potentially.- 111 replies

I hope you do get to reading the rest of his short fiction they are fun reads. Doing that list was actually hard for me, which is why it took almost a day to finish. You mention Shadows for Silence... it's not at all that I disliked that story, it was well written and gave some great insight into the workings of the Cosmere. But from an enjoyment standpoint I rank horror/horror-esque lower than other genres even though I cut my teeth reading on Stephen King, Christopher Pike, and Anne Rice. I still prefer things closer to sword and sorcery/epic fantasy end of the spectrum and sci-fi more than horror these days. Putting together this list, it was an A>B>C kind of thing, I like WoK more than X and X > Y story... and so Shadows for Silence ended up where it did. In my mind, it's much more gradual of a scale than the list indicates though. Since I have pretty much loved almost everything Brandon has written, it's could more probably be classed as 1.a, 1.b, 1.c, 2.a, 2.b, 2.c etc., than 1,2,3... Perfect State was even an enjoyable read, though overall I wasn't too sold on the idea personally, but that puts it at the bottom of my list. EDIT: can I also point out, with the Alcatraz series included, Brandon has published almost 3.5 novels/novellas/short stories PER YEAR since Elantris came out...

Maybe I need to go back and re-read it, but I remember not thinking much of it the one time I've read it. But each to their own and with Sanderson the great thing is there are different genre's and stories and ideas and tropes to read. Some are going to miss for some readers while they hit for others... Overall, if I had to rank them all against each other (excluding Alcatraz) here is my rankings: Way of Kings Mistborn Warbreaker Words of Radience Alloy of Law Shadows of Self Elantris White Sand Legion Steelheart Rithmatist Hero of Ages Emperor's Soul Firefight Defending Elysium Firstborn H.A.R.R.E. Infinity Blade: Awakening Well of Ascension Infinity Blade: Redemption Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell Legion: Skin Deep Hope of Elantris Sixth of Dusk Aether of Night Perfect State N/A: Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, A Memory of Light, Dreamer Overall I tended to rank full length originals higher than sequels or short stories/novellas, though that isn't always the case. "N/A" means I haven't read it yet. For Dreamer, I didn't way to pay $12 for an anthology that I was really only going to read one book out of, and for the WoT stuff... I never got in to WoT and then when I was interested, it was a long way in and Jordan was old. I was afraid he would pass away before finishing the series... and I was right. Unfortunately, now that means I'm slogging through it slowly while still reading other books so I'm only through book 4 and no where near Brandon's work on the series.

If you liked Perfect state you should read his other SciFi... Defending Elysium (my fav of his novellas) Firstborn Heuristic Algorithm and Reasoning Response Engine There are other Cosmere short stories as well. Hope of Elantris, Sixth of Dusk... I'm probably missing some. Also his Alcatraz series, the Rithmatist... Legion and Legion:Skin Deep All that said Perfect State has actually been my least favorite thing he's published to date...
-
Also - he does have access to Feruchemy, and likely Allomancy as well, so he could appear to be any age he wanted (just like TLR). Even with just Feruchemy, as a disguise he could do that as well... though it does take Atiumminds, or a Nicrosilmind for the pure investiture (assuming it works to pull out any form of Feruchemy desired).

Why do harmony need spikes to talk to people anyway?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to king of nowhere's topic in Mistborn
We've not, yet, seen a shard actually communicate to someone outside of: Ruin: he needed a spike so far as we know, but he listened to audible responses Harmony: he can hear via preservation's power and speak via spiked Ruin power Honor: communicates in a dream/vision like state and he is now dead. Endowment: only speaks to those who have died and just prior to sending back a Splinter mixed with them... I would be surprised if a Shard couldn't figure out how to verbally communicate, but it seems none of them really tries. -
The cover... First the art drew me in and then I read the back cover description and I loved the concept that the prophecied hero had failed his quest. That was how it started for me. I read this before Elantris even.

10th anniversary alterations (Spoilers!)
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Landis963's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Yeah it took a little over a week for Amazon to update the kindle version and I had to specifically request it still... stupid that other services can do it easily but not Amazon when they are so good at so many other things. I have to say, I LOVED the stinger with Hoid and the Skaze... just added so much more depth to his appearance for me. -
[Shadows of Self Spoilers] The Ars Arcanum
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Zalocx's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Sorry to double post, didn't want this lost in an edit... Aluminum universally messes with Investiture... and can be used by normal people to combat magics. At least as far as we've seen on Scadrial thus far. Silver (Threnody) and Ralkalest (Sel) also have effects on their local magic systems to negate or destroy it.- 41 replies

[Shadows of Self Spoilers] The Ars Arcanum
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to Zalocx's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Since I spawned this diversion musing on how Wayne's abilities mesh together for a perk, I want to add a couple of thoughts... First, you guys know that House is based off of Sherlock Holmes, right? Cosmerically speaking, he is more akin to Taravangian on a smart day than other healers in temperament. Second, I disagree that healers with empathy is a fantasy trope, it is more widespread than just fantasy, and that is because it is an easily recognizable thing for people, which means that it is generally true in reality. We expect our healers (of whatever stripe) to empathize with our situation and heal us and are angered when they don't seem to care. Either way, you are correct that Wayne's healing is self only and it is a stretch to go from his healing to "healers" to empathy, but that doesn't mean that it's not correct. You can see his incredible empathy just in the fact that he has continued to send money to the family of his one gun kill and, (SoS spoiler) Now some of that is guilt, but guilt and empathy go hand in hand. We are told in the AA that there are "perks" for combining metallic arts and Wayne is Twinborn, so we know therefore he should have a perk. His most amazing non-magic ability is his social camouflaging ability. While it may also just be a natural skill, I think it's his perk. Maybe I was subconsciously back linking his ability to self heal (the only kind of Metallic art specifically of healing) with his oversized empathy on display in the texts, but he is definitely empathetic to a greater degree than most, which to me, drives his ability to inhabit the persona of pretty much anyone he is around in very little time. To me those are both attributes of his Metallic arts. Add on to that the fact that: (SoS spoiler) to me screams investiture support in someway shape or another.- 41 replies

What Kind of Misting Would You Choose to Be?
Green Hoodie Mistborn replied to nicocoberru's topic in Mistborn
Tough tossup between Coinshot and Thug... I'd love the mobility and combat capabilities of the Coinshot. Also can you imagine being a Coinshot while driving and someone is about to hit you? Thug I'd love for the enhanced physical speed/stamina/strength/durability. -

I wish that question about the metal of Bleeder's spike had been "a Shard we've seen"... maybe someone else can ask that soon? I ask because there is speculation that it's from Bavadin, who we know, but we've never seen in canon publications.
