I'm reading The Stormlight Archive for the first time
Amira replied to Amira's topic in Stormlight Archive
Aw, sorry I disappointed you! I'm not really into poop humor, but my favorite part about that bit was how Shallan cast away Jasnah's and Tyn's expectations of her, decided to just be herself, and found that Adolin liked her for it. That was great. Usually I don't feel the romantic connection between book characters, but in this case I do. It was great! Now I want his rematch with Szeth! Do I have to wait until the climax for that? -

Which part? The parshment just don't seem to be something different than the parshendi. Just a different form. I might still be wrong. But if the parshmen and parshendi are the same, then the parshman can't be voidbringers on their own. Either both parshmen and parshendi are voidbringers, or they both aren't. Yes. To the extent that I can understand before reading them, haha. SA2, chapter 52: Yay Kaladin flying!!!!!!!!! Shallan's brother was the Shardbearer at the beginning of book 1 who killed all of Kaladin's friends?! I was right! But where is he going?? -

SA2, chapter 50: Nice to see that Adolin likes Shallan as much as Shallan likes Adolin. Yes, I approve of the plan of Adolin killing Sadeas. Good plan, Adolin. Chapter 51: Yikes, I think we can thank stormform for Eshonai's sudden change of heart! By the way, I no longer believe Jasnah and Shallan's theory that the Parshmen are voidbringers. It sounded like the Parshmen are Parshendi slaveform. It is possible that one of the Parshendi forms is what was called voidbringers, but it also seems likely that the voidbringers might be something else entirely. Really looking forward to hearing what Shen wanted to tell Kaladin. Maybe he'll tell him his real name, since "Shen" was something Kaladin made up when Shen didn't give his name. -

SA2, chapter 49: So nice to see that Shallan and Adolin are continuing to get along! They both seemed to open up quite a lot to each other during this meeting. I like it! What do people call this ship? Shalladolin? Why did Shallan want to stay outside till the very last second before the storm hit? Was I supposed to understand that, or will that be explained later? At the end, Shallan seemed to think that the other women were giving her dirty looks because they were jealous of her claiming Adolin, but I think they gave her dirty looks because they don't like Adolin and now by association don't like her. I think she misinterpreted. My rep says I'm a forger. I wonder what I'm forging. What book is this from? -

SA2, chapter 48, Shallan's past: His name wasn't actually mentioned in this chapter specifically, but it just reminded me - what's up with Shallan's dad being Lin and Kaladin's dad being Lirin? Nice try, but (1) flying Kaladin isn't going to be in Szeth's past, and (2) even without knowing that Szeth survives into book 5, just from a storytelling perspective, it's pretty clear Szeth isn't going to die in book 2. He's too powerful, central, and mysterious. There's too much we don't know about him. He clearly has lots more to give to the story. By the way, this is why I don't think Kaladin is in over his head. Even though it took him a while, he figured out what was the right thing to do. Now he just has to figure that out about Moash and Amaram and he'll be good. -

Unfortunately, I accidentally saw a certain commissioned piece of art depicting Szeth and Kaladin visiting Shinovar in book 5, so... What's that? SA2, chapter 47, Shallan: So you could only reach Urithiru via portal, except for Nohadon, author of TWoK, who walked there... What was that part about Shallan tuning out Pattern when he started talking about how long she'd been using Stormlight for? Does she just not want to think about her past? Speaking of which, how did Hoid (or whoever that messenger was in the chapter from her past) know ahead of time that she'd be a Lightweaver? He specifically directed her to create an illusion... I don't get it. By the way, which cosmere books does one have to read to learn cosmere lore? So far nothing I've read has taught me what shards are, what aethers are, who Adonalsium is, what investiture is, etc. Instead I've accidentally picked up all these things from the fandom (oops). -

Hoid? SA2, chapter 46: Yay, Kaladin gave Shen a spear! I'm proud of you, Kaladin. The god Rock met also sounds like Hoid. I wonder if Rock will recognize him next time he shows up as Wit. Yikes, I wonder what Kaladin is going to do about the group wanting to kill Elhokar. Now he knows who they are. Will he go to Dalinar? He can't exactly just ignore their existence. If he does decide to go to Dalinar, I assume he'll tell Moash first... Either way, it's going to be a mess. * Someone * will hate Kaladin, whichever way it goes. I wonder how ugly it's going to get. -

I can see why Moash did what he did. He didn't tell Kaladin about his past, because he knew Kaladin would never help him conspire against the king that they were supposed to protect. Moash should have confided in Kaladin much like Kaladin decided to confide in Dalinar about Amaram, but he didn't, because Moash is the kind of man who takes matters into his own hands. The problem is, Moash was sloppy. Shallan would have done a better job. Kaladin would have done a better job. Moash did a very sloppy job if he seriously expected not to get caught. As soon as Kaladin asked him about his involvement with the balcony, Moash was toast. Now he's in a very big pickle, but I'm sure he doesn't realize it yet. Moash is going to get into more trouble. The best course of action for him at this point is probably to cut his losses - either promise Kaladin he'd never do it again if Kaladin keeps quiet, or straight up leave. But I expect he will do neither. There's really no good resolution for him at this point, and he's too proud/stubborn to even see the trap he's walked into. You all: "Isn't this part great? What do you think of this? And how about that?" Me: "So, um, when does Kaladin learn to fly and when does he fight Szeth?" In all seriousness, though, I understand where you're coming from, since both Kaladin and Shallan are starting to really figure out their powers and come into their own. No, he is not... not yet. While Shallan is very capable, you can clearly feel how she's a rookie, still figuring out her way around the world and people and who she wants to be. Kaladin started book one knowing how to lead. His struggle at the beginning was * whether * to try and help Bridge Four, whereas a normal person probably would have thought trying to save them wasn't an option because there was nothing he could do. Kaladin is too capable to be in over his head even now, but we * are * starting to see things potentially starting to fall apart for him. Moash is going to be a problem. Shen is going to be a problem. Amaram is going to be a problem. The remaining question is, can Kaladin up his game in time? I'm crossing my fingers that the answer is yes. Personally, I don't like any of the flashbacks. I understand how they contribute, but I wish we didn't have to have them as part of the story. SA2, chapter 45, Shallan's past: Was that messenger another world hopper? He spoke of shards and somehow it didn't seem like he was talking about Blade and Plate. So I know this is still very far, but after WoR, do I read OB or Edgedancer? -

Kaladin. It's not even close. SA2, chapter 44, Kaladin: Well, now we know for sure it was Moash. I really don't want Kaladin to get in trouble. What a mess. I hope it ends okay, at least for Kaladin. Apart from that, nice to see him training. -

That was 41. ? SA2, chapter 42: Aah, Shallan can completely transform her appearance! Both she and Kaladin are making some serious progress with their powers. She's going to meet the Ghostbloods, so scary! Edit: chapter 43: Pattern saves the day again, telling Shallan she's being tailed. Shallan is going in over her head yet again. One of these days she's going to get in big trouble. -

Ooh, can't wait! Why is it so far away though? SA2, chapter 41: Yay, Kaladin finally learned to walk on walls! It kind of makes sense that he had to see Szeth do it first. I like that Renarin wanted to join Bridge Four! Yikes, what is Kaladin going to do about Moash? -

SA2, chapter 40: Shallan gets settled at Sebarial's, and I kinda like him. Kaladin training had better be next! Who's in book 3? Dalinar? -

Can't wait! SA2, chapter 37: Nice, Adolin has another duel lined up. Go Adolin! Chapter 38: I like that Adolin and Shallan like each other from the beginning. Seems like Shallan was made for politics. Funny how Dalinar can just openly announce his scheme to have Adolin win everyone's Shards. All the main characters are finally in the same place! Only took a book and a half Hm, my rep says I'm a Dakhor Monk. What book is that from? -

The way Eshonai reacted in the Storm. It seemed like she was expecting something different than what she got. SA2, chapter 35: Adolin continues to wonder about Kaladin and Navani continues to produce impossible fabrials. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Adolin eventually finds out about Kaladin being a surgebinder and how he reacts when he does. My rep says I'm a Lord Prelan now. I don't think I know what that is. -

SA2, interlude 8, Eshonai: The Parshendi discovered Stormform! I wonder how this will affect Eshonai's negotiation meeting with Dalinar. Another thing to look forward to in part 3. We still didn't find out what the deal was with her getting the wrong spren during the transformation (or whatever happened there). Hm... -

SA2, interlude 7: Taln was brought to the Shattered Plains! This set of interludes might not have Szeth in them, but I'm rather liking how they're staying short and interesting. Both #6 and #7 had events that were very satisfying to hear about, and that have me looking forward to hearing more about how they develop. Haha, I know, I'm reading the cosmere in the wrong order. Oh well -

Maybe I wasn't clear. "The storm is Invested" = This was me pointing out that Zahel referred to the storm as Invested, a cosmere term but not a Roshar term as far as I know. "ardents are monks" = This was me pointing out that Zahel referred to the ardents as monks, which I don't recall seeing in SA previously. Again, not a Roshar term. Based on these two observations, I arrived at the conclusion = "Zahel is a world hopper"- 817 replies

SA2, interlude 6: As expected, Kaladin went back to ask Zahel to train him, but why didn't he wait til morning?? The storm is Invested and ardents are monks? Zahel is a world hopper?? -

Lies. SA2, interlude 5: Eshonai, no Szeth Did you mean next * set * of interludes, after this one? So, um, was Eshonai tricked? Was she given a different spren than she was expecting? -

SA2, chapter 34: "Red carpet, before it was white..." where was that from? I can't remember. So Tyn is dead, nice, and we finally get to see Shallan using her Shardblade. What was that part about her not needing ten heartbeats, but she does, because she needs time? Pattern continues to be a badass, go Pattern! I'm glad Shallan will be arriving on the Shattered Plains without Tyn. Now I can look forward to reading that in the beginning of part 3. Another thing I look forward to in part 3 is Kaladin going back to that ardent who wanted to train him to fight against enemies with Shardblade and agreeing to be trained. After (temporarily) losing his arm, there's no way this isn't happening. Next up are the interludes, and Szeth isn't listed! Not fair! I want to know what happened with him! Is he just gonna retreat for a while? Can he do that when he was commanded to kill Dalinar? Szeth continues to be very confusing. Took me way too long to realize this, but despite the highstorms, there's no snow in Alethkar. Huh. To celebrate my finishing part 2, here's a bad SA joke: Q: Why do the Alethi collect gemhearts? A: They like the symmetry of the word megagem. -

Ooh, I'm excited! SA2, chapter 32: YES! This is what I'm talking about! Kaladin vs Szeth let's gooooooooo!!! And Dalinar caught the Shardblade, go Blackthorn! Chapter 33: It was so satisfying to read about Kaladin healing his arm/hand even though I knew it was coming. I hope Kaladin gets better with his powers soon; he'd better start practicing! I hope he tells Dalinar about his powers soon. And what was Szeth so frightened of when he saw Kaladin use Stormlight? He's truthless because of his powers? So many questions. -

SA2, chapter 31: Nice to see Kaladin making progress with the other bridge crews! Of course Tyn smokes (or the Roshar equivalent of it). I'm liking her less and less. I was excited for Shallan to arrive at the Shattered Plains, but now that she's playing this game with Tyn, I'm mostly nervous! -

SA2, chapter 30: Gosh, I wish Shallan just told Tyn the truth. Like, one day just be like, "Actually, girl, I've been lying to you all this time, I'm not planning any trick on the Shattered Plains, I'm actually who I originally said I was." Anyway, wonder what's up with her seemingly random drawings? Is a sort of visions part of her surge power? I guess it makes sense. Dalinar sees visions during highstorms, and Kaladin "rode the storm" one time and saw faraway places. Shallan just does it through her drawings. I hope we get more answers!
