discussion An interesting WoB on Sel and Threnody
Argent replied to Rasarr's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I wonder why the mixup happened... -
Nazh and Khriss we standing on the Cognitive equivalent of water (a lake), which Kelsier remarks to be like rock, whereas the Cognitive equivalent of ground is like mists. So Hoid needed a boat because he was going where there was ground.

Hoid with the bead of Lerasium (Spoilers)
Argent replied to FlailingMunchies's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The title of this thread makes me think of Hoid Potter and the Bead of Lerasium far too much. -
Apocalypse Guard: New Series in the Reckoners Multiverse

Well, technically my thread is fine, it's all the people who are posting Calamity spoilers that are not I am just announcing the announcement -
Hardly a spoiler, actually. There is a kandra who shows up fairly early, chapter 3-4, his name is VenDell. He is the quest giver in this book

[WoK] Chapter 11 Kharbranth Hospital Sample
Argent replied to GenericMastermindAnt's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yeah, there are some theories. But how about this. Taln, broken by his torture, snaps and kills Rayse, Ascending to Odium. "Three of the fixteen ruled", but Honor is not Splintered, Rayse is dead, and Cultivation is staying aside, while Taln, "the Broken One reigns." Plot. Twist! EDIT: Double plot twist, Taln doesn't kill Rayse, he switched minds with him. The man calling himself Taln is actually Rayse. I am going to headcanon this so hard, I'll make it real. -
I've been posting threads about new Graphic Audio adaptations for Brandon's books for some time now, and I've realized that they are not very good discussion threads in part because not many people listed to the GA audiobooks, in part because there isn't much to discuss. Regardless of whether we (dis)like the Graphic Audio approach to audiobooks, and regardless of whether we can afford them or not, I think we can all agree that pretty Cosmere art is always a good thing, and fortunately the artists GA works with are on point there. So, if for no other reason but to put together a list of snazzy art, I am going to use this thread to aggregate all of Brandon's Graphic Audio audiobooks, with links to higher resolution versions of the covers when possible. I'll have to get to the covers later though, a bit busy now =\ Elantris Elantris (1 of 3) Elantris (2 of 3) Elantris (3 of 3) Warbreaker Warbreaker (1 of 3) Cover Warbreaker (2 of 3) Cover Warbreaker (3 of 3) Cover Mistborn The Final Empire (1 of 3) The Final Empire (2 of 3) Cover The Final Empire (3 of 3) The Well of Ascension (1 of 3) Cover The Well of Ascension (2 of 3) The Well of Ascension (3 of 3) The Hero of Ages (1 of 3) The Hero of Ages (2 of 3) Cover The Hero of Ages (3 of 3) Cover The Alloy of Law Cover Shadows of Self The Bands of Mourning (1 of 2) The Bands of Mourning (2 of 2) The Stormlight Archive The Way of Kings (1 of 5) Cover The Way of Kings (2 of 5) Cover The Way of Kings (3 of 5) Cover The Way of Kings (4 of 5) Cover The Way of Kings (5 of 5) Words of Radiance (1 of 5) Words of Radiance (2 of 5) Words of Radiance (3 of 5) Words of Radiance (4 of 5) Words of Radiance (5 of 5) Oathbringer (1 of 6) Oathbringer (2 of 6) Oathbringer (3 of 6) Oathbringer (4 of 6) Alcatraz Alcatraz Versus The Evil Librarians Alcatraz Versus The Scrivener’s Bones Alcatraz Versus the Knights of Crystallia Alcatraz Versus the Shattered Lens The Dark Talent Bastille vs. the Evil Librarians: The Worldspire [presumably] Other Shadows Beneath

Apocalypse Guard: New Series in the Reckoners Multiverse
Argent replied to Argent's topic in The Reckoners
Because breaking the genre twice (once by writing so storming much, and once by putting everything in the super-outlined Cosmere) is not enough. -
They do hire different voice actors for (pretty much) every character, add special effects, do dramatic reading. Go to their website, find one of Brandon's books (or any book, really), and listen to an audio sample, it'll give you a good idea. My personal favorite is the one from Elantris.

!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL !!! Brandon has been dropping hints about another series set in the Reckoners universe - multiverse, as it is - and now we have the official announcement: here it is! For convenience:

discussion An interesting WoB on Sel and Threnody
Argent replied to Rasarr's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I wonder how far into the Cognitive Realm the Dor's effects can be felt. Is it possible that the Shades do originate on Threnody, but the reason they spawn in the first place is because the Dor affects them all the way from Sel? -
Graphic Audio seems... if not unpopular, then at least not very popular in these forums, but I've loved their adaptations for years, and now they've officially announced that they will be doing The Way of Kings (something that was only hinted at in the past, I think). The fun - and not very surprising - part is that while most of their novel audiobook adaptations have to be split into two or three parts, The Way of Kings is being split into five! One of the great things about the GA products are the covers, which have only gotten better since they first picked up Brandon's books. So I want to keep this thread (or maybe create a master thread somewhere) up to date with links to all the different parts and (if I can find them) higher resolution versions of the covers. So here is the list of links. There is no artwork currently available, but it should start showing up soon. The Way of Kings (1 of 5): Available on March 21, 2016. I suspect the cover for this one might be this, since the same artist did the GA covers for all 3 parts The Hero of Ages and The Alloy of Law. The Way of Kings (2 of 5): Available on May 1, 2016 The Way of Kings (3 of 5): ??? The Way of Kings (4 of 5): ??? The Way of Kings (5 of 5): ???

Yeah, because it's that good

I wish we'd stop asking authors whom they want to finish their books if they die... I am kind of curious, but it could be an awfully morbid question, a part of Robert Jordan's legacy I am not happy about. And I feel Brandon gets this question more than most others (though I imagine George R. R. Martin is up there on this list too)...
-
I firmly believe you are making a mistake here. Dresden has very little in common with Alera, and from all the people I've talked with about it, the only ones with a negative opinion have been the ones you had stopped after the first few books. Obviously the decision is yours, and I won't push, but the Jim Butcher ranks very high on my list of authors I recommend to friends, probably right after Brandon and Rothfuss.
-
I think you are largely correct, at least about the basics. A while back I asked Brandon... something that I can no longer remember... but I was trying to confirm that doing magic in the Cosmere produces waves similar to, say, electromagnetic waves, and Seekers detect those (with different Shards, or probably different magic systems, having different wave signatures), and he mostly confirmed it. I wish I remembered the details though...

Calamity Tour - Austin, TX, Feb 25, 2016
Argent replied to Mark Lindberg's topic in Events and Signings
I don't know. It's a fair point, but out of the potentially hundreds, if not thousands of spren types, why do the Radiants bind with only ten? That's probably a better question now that I think about it... -
[SH spoilers] [Theory] Steelpush/Ironpull affects really metals ?
Argent replied to Yata's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So, I was going to get all salty about how everyone is ignoring the WoB I got, and then I realized I hadn't actually shared it here... So, from the Calamity Chicago signing: -
[SH spoilers] [Theory] Steelpush/Ironpull affects really metals ?
Argent replied to Yata's topic in Cosmere Discussion
You are still pushing on things in the Physical Realm though - in my mind it's the difference between trying to open a door laden with gold versus trying to open a door to a treasury. I obviously don't have a detailed idea of how this could work, but it makes sense to me and I don't see obvious contradictions. -
*explodes* Paladin Brewer, the superstar of the Calamity tour (so far)! Sel and Threnody being in the same system is definitely the highlight of this round. I will need to start going to neighboring states in future tours to get enough cred to combat this swarm of questions

[SH spoilers] [Theory] Steelpush/Ironpull affects really metals ?
Argent replied to Yata's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I actually had a different idea - since we now know that Wax's superpowered steel & iron while he is holding the Bands allow him to essentially see Investiture (kind of), I had the idea that the reason Allomancers believe steel and iron affect metals specifically is because metals are the easiest to affect (them being sort of gateways to the Spiritual Realm), but with enough power, they could Push and Pull on anything. After all, if Wax can see the blue lines pointing to everything, and we know that traditionally those lines point to valid targets for Steelpushes and Ironpulls, then why not be able to affect those things too? -
I need to brush up on my older WoBs, I am forgetting things...

Calamity Tour - Austin, TX, Feb 25, 2016
Argent replied to Mark Lindberg's topic in Events and Signings
Interesting, interesting. I wonder whether it is Hoid or the 17th Shard that are trying to do this. Probably the latter. Which would suggest that Hoid is somehow foiling them - maybe by lugging around Investiture they need. Woah, did I jump to conclusions there...
