  1. That totally works! If you want to give away just 1 Breath, you can Awaken an object using just one Breath, store the rest into a different object, get the one you want to give away back, and then give it away. Then you can take back the Breaths you stored and boom. Minus 1 Breath. Your method is much faster, but it gives most of the Breaths to someone else.

You're not the first to think of this. If you read the Warbreaker Annotations, Brandon goes over this method and talks about the fact that Vivenna could have done this to get rid of her Breaths and that Denth knew about this method.

  2. Woah huh. Good question. I don't think they are Cognitive Shadows. They seem to me to be people supercharged. I think its described that their bodies basically use Investiture as fuel, drawing in more when they need to heal and when they use AonDor, but otherwise just augmenting their speed and strength and durability and the like.

I don't think they have enough to become Cognitive Shadows, unless they were using AonDor as they die.

    Spoiler

As for going into the Shardpool being similar to what Kelsier did...maybe? I could see it. I think its more of a way to return the magic back to its source. After all, there's an upper limit on how many Elantrians be exist at once, according to a WoB. But I think its very likely that an Elantrian could like take a long bath in Devotion's Perdendicularity, not die or move into the Cognitive, and be far stronger but even more tied to location than before. But I really don't know.

This is a great question. Even though I don't feel like they are Cognitive Shadows, its entirely possible they are. Personally, that would make them too similar to Returned, which is one of the reasons why I think they're just peeps who have had their bodies altered to be fueled by Dor.

  3. I've never seen "I am Unity" as being Dalinar's 3rd Oath. To me its always been "If I must fall, I shall rise each time a better man" because that's the moment when he's no longer under Odium's control. "I am Unity" to me was Dalinar speaking from the Spiritual Realm or something. I do like the idea that Unity is a potential Shard that could be made from the remnants of Honor and that would explain "We killed you" and "I didn't plan for him to Ascend."

But, I could also see it as Dalinar speaking his 5th Oath before he's done 4, which is technically possible I think. It just doesn't do anything magical.

OKAY WAIT. I think I have an explanation if that was his 5th Ideal. His 4th would have been "If I must fall I shall rise each time a better man" and his 3rd would have been his marriage Oath with Navani. It was an Oath he made to the Stormfather, after all. Then again, the SF doesn't say "THESE WORDS ARE ACCEPTED" he just says "SO BE IT," but Kaladin didn't hear the SF say anything when he said his 2rd Ideal and the Skybreakers Accept each other's Ideals so maybe the rules on that are more fast and loose than we expect.

If it only takes a few seconds to charge a bullet-sized piece of metal, then this gives him flexibility and isn't particularly wasteful. If it takes minutes for a single bullet, that's probably too slow in a firefight, and a waste of Feruchemical storing opportunity. Good point.

Remember, Wax is almost always storing weight into his iron armbands. So, even if it takes a while to store up for a single bullet, he could instead store weight into his bullets the moment a firefight starts, filling them up with extra weight right before he fires them to make sure they've get enough Investiture to resist a Steelpush.

Still, you're totally right that Ranette's Hazekiller bullets are probably better and more efficient to use than Ironmind rounds.

I can't remember, but did Elend burn through metals faster than Vin?

If the strength of your allomancy allows more power from the same amount of metal then the portions of metal wouldn't be that hard to believe.

Elend doesn't burn through his metals faster than Vin unless he's flaring more. Having greater Allomantic Strength means you get more Investiture out of every gram of metal burned.

  6. Not...exactly? A little?

The Inquisitors in the Mistborn books are a religious organization tasked with controlling the populace through violence, threats of violence, and subterfuge. So, in that sense, they were similar to the Inquisitors of real life. But, without spoilers, Inquisitors act very differently in Mistborn than the ones in real life did, for good reason.

Why take responsibility for something you didn't do?

Because you're benefiting from it. Humans are now the dominant race on Roshar because their ancestors turned the Singers into mindless slaves. That is an awful crime and it hasn't really been repaid. But, the humans we see actually did do some of it. They kept the slavery going.

Navani, Dalinar, Shallan, even Kaladin to a lesser extent, all used parshmen as their slaves.

Now, these humans are not literally responsible for the Singers becoming parshmen, but they still need to do something about it. As we see with Rlain, people still treat Singers as sub-human, even after they have regained their Identity.

Do you think that I shouldn't take some responsibility for the systematic oppression of black people in America just because I've never owned a slave? No. All of the responsibility, also no, but if I want to be a moral and upstanding person, I need to address that and not just sweep it under the rug with the excuse of "Well I never participated in slavery so why should I care?"

Sorry, this is something I have powerful opinions on.

Also, I realized the first part is called "Above Silence" and I have no idea why, even though I read all of it. Can anyone clue me in?

The names of the different parts in each book form a ketek, a symmetrical poem.
I believe the one for TWoK is "Above silence, the illuminating storms   dying storms   illuminate the silence above."
Each part doesn't really align with what happens during that part of the book, though the keteks do relate to what's happening in the book over all.

I dont think so, otherwise any shard piece of godmetal including plate would have that sort of innate realmic trait.

      Reveal hidden contents

Atium spikes werent unheard of but as I understand it still required the Hemalurgic Intent to pierce the realms, the same way as a any mundane metal in the metallic arts.

    Fair enough.

  10. I wasn't aiming to replicate the every single aspect of Rosharan Shardblades, but it would definitely be possible. A preprogrammed storage location (probably a safe or vault in Elantris) and then letting it teleport back to your hand when you write a specific set of Aons, maybe have that set inscribed onto another plate that you carry with you? I honestly don't think it would be an issue to not include the summoning, but the spiritual cutting would probably not be too much of a challenge for a master of AonDor. But for some reason I'm convinced that if you just shove enough Investiture into a weapon, it will end up doing damage on the Spiritual as well as Physical, even if that's not the Intent. I could be wrong tho.

    [Stormlight Spoilers]

    Spoiler

As I said, I wasn't aiming to make a full replication of Rosharan Shardblades. But, your idea of making a sword like this act as a place for a Seon to "inhabit" is really cool and would bring it closer to a 2nd Generation Shardblade. You'd probably want the Seon Deo for this to work as intended, but I wonder what a Seon like Daa or Ehe would do to this Aonic Shardblade. It's also entirely possible that you could "program" a personality into the Shardblade without a Seon and end up with a result like Nightblood.

  11. Given that AonDor (and all the Selish arts) have been described as a "programming language" for magic, you should in theory be able to create a Shardblade using AonDor (if we're going by the definition of Shardblade as a highly Invested weapon) and I think I've figured out a method. It's probably not the only method, but this is one I thought of.

So, we've seen how Elantrians can create metal plates with an Aon inscribed on them to create the effect without having to draw it out themselves. They use that for lighting and transportation around the city. We also know that you can create AonDor "equations" which use different Aons as modifiers to create a more specific effect. What's stopping someone from combining those things and then putting it on a sword?

My idea here is to forge a normal steel sword, probably a little oversized in terms of width to make space for the Aons, and then inscribe an Aon equation onto the flat of the blade. Then, when wielded by an Elantrian, they could push AonDor into the sword, and activate the Aons. The specific ones I would have inscribed on the blade are probably Deo, Dio, maybe Eda and Ela, Iir, Rao, and probably others purely as modifiers. The point of it all would be to enhance the sword with power, increasing it's cutting capacity and durability. The result would be similar to a Shardblade, if not as powerful. A mini-Shardblade if you will.

Tell me what you guys think about this idea, if you think it would work or not, and maybe an easier way to make an AonDor Shardblade if you can think of one!

  12. @CameronUluvara I'm getting a serious case of confirmation bias from you here.

Your theory was sensible and cool, but it had flaws. When those flaws are pointed out, you point to the evidence you have for your theory. That's good.
But when people bring up evidence which counters yours and proves your theory wrong, you stick to your guns and refuse to have your opinion swayed by new evidence, instead looking for more evidence which backs you up while ignoring the evidence that people bring to you.

Yes, metals in the Metallic Arts are keys. But, all of the evidence you bring up which talks about the metals not being invested and instead drawing the power from the Spiritual Realm talks about Allomancy only. Meanwhile, there is loads of WoBs which talk about how Hemalurgy and Feruchemy actually Invest the metals.

But all of this is a mute point when it comes to your original theory on aluminum. Godmetals cant be made via Soulcasting, the Shard has to make it themselves. Aluminum can be made with Soulcasting, but then because of its powers to resist investiture (or counter it, whatever) it can't then be Soulcast into something else.

  13. To me that reads as the first time Gavilar said words with actual Intent behind them, rather than just speaking platitudes. We know that you have to actually mean the words you say otherwise they won't get accepted (see Venli in RoW) and while Gavilar was saying words that could be Bondsmith oaths, he never fully meant any of them. As the Stormfather (or faker depending on what you believe) says "Guessing will not bring you to the Words, Gavilar." He has to mean it, otherwise it doesn't count.

So while his demand wasn't the right words, it was the first time he said something with Intent. Also, Gavilar's Words would be different from Dalinar's and would probably have to do with conquering more than Dalinar's more peaceful "uniting"

With help he makes the animals produce gem hearts(like the singers) to store stormlight

Up until this, I was following along and agreeing with you. I think the animals on Roshar have always had gemhearts like the singers. Which implies that Highstorms have always brought Investiture to Roshar, but that it wasn't as much before Honor invested himself in the Highstorm.

strictly speaking, her atium shadow split in two, but he was always going to block the wrong one because of her intentions.

Not because of her intentions, I would say. More because he just doesn't have the reaction speed to alter his block to defend the second atium shadow. Which is fair, only a Steel or Zinc Compounder (I think its Zinc which does mental speed...) would have that kind of reaction time.

As of now we've only seen perfectly accurate predictions over a very, very short period of time; specifically, through Allomantically burning atium.

And even this has been proven to not be 100% accurate with the end of Well of Ascension and Vin defeating Zane. Granted, she only managed that by using his own future sight against him, but still. Atium showed Zane Vin attacking one way and she attacked a different way.

Future Sight, even really accurate short term future sight such as Atium, is not perfect. Free will, while predictable with Future Sight and pure logic (The Diagram), exists and proves Future Sight wrong on multiple occasions.
