It was not long before Aelinor spied a shifty-looking individual, wearing a cloak and moving covertly through the trees.

Aelinor’s steps were naturally quiet, but she didn’t have a mind to be stealthy until she spotted the figure. She immediately crouched down and stepped closer to the foliage on the edge of the path, watching the figure closely through the bushes. This was an unfamiliar world, but according to Unintelligible, it belonged to… an Author, with… good intentions… this time? Agh, she couldn’t remember. She decided to just watch the figure for a moment. No use getting into any fights she can’t win.

Yall… I am not impressed with modern horror. Do we need a seventh sequel to a slasher movie that isnt scary at all outside of shick value, or yet another Steel Wool FNaF game?

ive been trying to get a list of like, actually good horror stuff- books, films, games, and i want to hear what yall think about legit horror that isnt yucky or weird, but makes you think and is actually able to be enjoyed without glorifying violence. so far i can think of:

    The King In Yellow

    Kane Parson’s Backrooms

    Iron Lung

Ever heard of Heretic? :P That one was pretty scary... And very well done, I thought.

Unintelligible shrugged. "I... guess I'll go find whoever's trying to stop the Witherlord, and join them."

Aelinor nodded. "Good luck," she said, turning her gaze back to the forest. "I'll find you once I've visited the Dreamsmith."

She gave Unintelligible a nod, and set out along the path, resisting the urge to glance back at Sequence's grave as she walked into the trees.

As she walked, she remained vigilant, watching both the path and the trees beyond. She didn't know exactly how long it would take and how the entrance would present itself, so she kept her eyes peeled for anything out of the ordinary.

Does 'Through the Living Sequence' work?

    or is it too long

that's probably what I would do, since it's recognizable... hopefully it doesn't exceed the character limit or anything, it's only one character longer than yours after all :P

NOTE:  This is all theory and speculation and opinion.

So, I realized that there is chouta on Scadrial, and I figure that those red-haired people who keep getting mentioned are Herdazians, and that means that there is a population of Rosharans living on Scadrial, and that means that there's no hope for the Scadrians, and that makes me sad.

I don't really want to see the Scadrians become slaves again.  I don't want to see species go extinct on Scadrial again.  I don't want the children of Ashyn to claim, desecrate, and then leave a THIRD world.

It's what's going to happen, though.  We're going to get Navani Kholin XVIII telling a first-generation Kandra that she's "just as native" as any Kandra.  We're going to see everything unique and interesting about Scadrial get commodified, made extinct, enslaved, exploited, trafficked, forgotten, or repurposed.  Because that's what they did to Roshar.  That's what Navani and Jasnah did to Roshar.  That's what the good guys, the honorable faction, of the Rosharan system, do.  None of what I describe is appreciably worse than what has already been done on Roshar, it's just that we never had a bunch of books to learn to care about the Listeners and the Spren in the way that we had for the Scadrians.

Slavery is no stranger to Rosharan societies.  Navani herself is innovating new ways to subordinate Spren to her whims and the material needs of humanity, and she's one we're supposed to be rooting for.

The Lord Ruler oppressed the Skaa for so, so long.  A millennia.  It has only been about three or four centuries that the Skaa have been free since then, that the Terris have not been selectively trafficking and breeding themselves just to stay alive.  And the Set, serving Bavadin, do the same thing with the ones they take.  Because that is what happens when outside Shards take an interest in Scadrial.

One can only hope that Scadrians are not interfertile with non-Scadrian humans, or else... eugh.  No way is anybody going to let them have reproductive autonomy, not when Feruchemy and Allomancy are genetically passed and the need to oppose Retribution is so great.  The Terris will probably go back to how they were in the times of the Lord Ruler, as will the Skaa.

And, honestly?  That's probably going to utterly break Kelsier and Harmony... especially Harmony, considering Tindwyl...  That's probably how we get Discord and why they will love him for it.

Because the Scadrians rejected Bavadin.  They rejected Autonomy, and stayed true to Harmony.  True to Ruin and Preservation.  And you can't reject Autonomy in favor of Harmony without repercussions, without an exploration of what it means to choose Harmony.

The Scadrians will, I predict, accept the Rosharans, as the Listeners and Spren did.  And they will end up just as the Listeners and Spren have.  Because they must.  Because it is the right thing to do.  Because the Rosharans in question are refugees, and that is worth everything.  The worth of a world, of a society, of a people, is in how they treat such.  To not accept the Rosharans would be to lose something irreplaceable and eternal.  Something worth more than freedom, more than autonomy, more than life, more than the world.

For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his soul?

Well, what time are you talking about?

Spoilers for Isles of the Emberdark and the Sunlit Man:

    Spoiler

We know that the Ones Above who visit First of Sun are Scadrian, and we hear Nomad talk about Scadrian space stations and scientists often. We know that both of these books take place well into the future of the Cosmere, so it's reasonable to assume that Scadrial as a planet has made something of an empire for itself, which in turn I think means it's reasonable to assume that Scadrians haven't been entirely enslaved or subdued by the Rosharans.

Unless, maybe, this is far enough into the future that the groups that once made up Scadrial like the skaa and the Terris have been completely eradicated and/or assimilated into the ruling Rosharans that you suggest will exist, but it's been long enough that the now mostly ethnically Rosharan population of Scadrial considers themselves Scadrians.

While Vathi was dealing with the Ones Above (who we've established as Scadrian) on behalf of First of Sun, she was also making secret dealings with a Rosharan shardbearer of some kind, so we know that Rosharans and Scadrians are still two distinct groups at this point in time... Though I suppose that the Rosharans who stayed and progressed on Roshar would be separate from any refugees to other planets.

Hm. Interesting thought exercise, I should probably finish Isles of the Emberdark and the Sunlit Man and think on it further :P.

Also, sorry if somebody already made these points, I couldn't be bothered to read through all 17 pages of this thread :P.

  6. Wow, this thread is so old... Six years since it started and four since I discovered it :P. It makes me happy that people still post here!

Anyways, for something gay disasters related, my girlfriend and I had our third anniversary the other day... We don't plan on ever getting married or anything but anniversaries are still fun! We(mostly she, I tried and failed to help) cooked dinner and we talked about memories and cried a bunch.. It was lovely :D. She's so pretty, guys, like oh my god...

for fear, subversion was to late.

atlas lay on the ground, her body limp as the mist went into subversions vacuum. Her eyes were a faded red and a small smile twitched on her lips…. Atlas.. she always loved smiling. Through her cartoons, after she ran away, a grin plastered her face through the darkest of times. It’s only fitting she smiled as she met peace.

She wasnt angry at death, she was thankful that she would be able to meet her friends again, maybe she would go to elysium with cricket… or perhaps heaven with the scribe or seraphina.

Regardless of where she went she wanted people to be able to be happy, if her death meant anything if her life meant anything, it was joy. Joy in the small times, joy in the idle conversations between posts, or the thrill she learned from fighting.

She wanted to teach people that joy was one of the things you should cherish most, even if she had to teach herself this. It’s not forever, it cant be. For you cant exist forever. It’s the memories you make and the feelings you feel, good bad or ugly they stay with you more than a person.

So she told all this to the thread.

    To everyone,

to the authors and characters alike,

any non narrators would feel this sense for an unknown reason, while narrators could read this.

A final message as a small light in a multiverse blinked out.

    WHAT

  9. On 2/28/2026 at 4:44 PM, NameIess said:

Unintelligible nodded. "Of course." He frowned. "Although... I have no idea how to teach you how to use a Plotblade. I never had much luck finding a useful one, so I never really gained much experience using one."

Aelinor nodded slowly, dropping Conflict. It puffed into blue mist as soon as it left her hands.

”I think I need to visit the Dreamsmith,” she said softly, looking at her hands. “How would I go about finding him? Sequence never really told me how she did it.”

The Plotblade of Conflict can grant skill. What it cannot grant is determination.

Conflict can be used to defeat a more powerful opponent if the wielder is more determined than that opponent.

    Ohhhh, I see… That’s actually kinda scary :P

"Yes," Unintelligible said. "The Witherlord is a much more pressing issue than Rebus.”

On 2/21/2026 at 6:36 AM, DragonHeir said:

Rebus… nodded. “Yes. Until the Witherlord has been defeated, you may very well need the Blade. We can wait.”

Aelinor glanced between both of them, shifting on her feet uneasily. She glanced back at the stone vault nestled in the foliage.

“… Yeah. Okay.” She looked down at her ruined hands, and summoned Conflict, balancing the sword between her hands. She looked at it for a moment. “I’ll… hold onto it.” She looked at Unintelligible. “Would you… help me learn how to use it?”

  11. On 2/13/2026 at 1:50 PM, DragonHeir said:

Rebus, on the other hand, believed the Blade compensated for lack of training but allowed cleverness and determination to decide the result of a fight.
Rebus would indeed die, but it would be neither ordinary nor particularly impactful. Conflict could certainly stop his body from reforming, though.

Hm.. Perhaps we should ask @xinoehp512, he's the plotblade expert :P.

On 2/13/2026 at 1:50 PM, DragonHeir said:

“As soon as he can do what is required, I suspect.”

On 2/13/2026 at 3:31 PM, NameIess said:

"He can be beaten." Unintelligible said firmly. "Narrators have died before. Rebus merely splits himself to the point that doing significant damage is very difficult. But that also should leave him weaker, at least in terms of raw Narration."

    --

"That is... very bad." Unintelligible said. "Where will he carry out the ritual?"

Aelinor glanced between Unintelligible and Rebus, somewhat... unsure. "Is fighting right now... necessary? When we- ... you, have greater evils to face?"

  12. On 2/11/2026 at 12:26 PM, DragonHeir said:

Rebus was there, standing on the path. Antagonist hummed, but he was patiently waiting to fight. Aelinor seemed to misunderstand the functionality of the Blade, but Unintelligible would be an acceptable opponent regardless.

On 2/11/2026 at 12:33 PM, NameIess said:

Unintelligible stared at Willow, head cocked. “I can teach you to fight.” He offered. “And the Dreamsmith offered the possibility of restoring your hands. As for Rebus…” he glanced at the Antagonist with disdain. “You didn’t specify a timeframe for fighting him. Just sometime after we buried Sequence. So we have plenty of time.”

be a hero. He thought. Help others. It’s what she would want.

Aelinor was gazing past Rebus with a somewhat vacant look.

As Sequence had understood Conflict, passing down the knowledge to Aelinor, the blade would grant the wielder strength, power, and whatever special abilities they needed to match their opponent equally, making sure that a fight would come down to skill and nothing more.

"... Both would be... nice..." She said. "But- ... I'm not- ... I'm not... special. I don't want to spend forever training while Rebus roams free." Her eyes focused on the man on the path now, studying him for a moment. "... Can he even be beaten? Killing him, or... this form of him here now, would that even do anything? Does he die like a normal person should?" She turned to look at Unintelligible. "Could you do it alone?"

  13. 18 hours ago, NameIess said:

Unintelligible nodded silently. Moving slowly, he walked to the burial vault and placed Sequence's body within it. For a long moment, he stared at her pale, dead face. Then he turned away and walked back to Aelinor's side.

Of its own accord, the lid of the burial vault slid into place, a final barrier between Sequence and the living world she had left.

"Well," Unintelligible whispered. "That's that. She's... gone." He closed his eyes. "We should be on our way soon. The events of the Thread wait for no one. Do you... have any final words to say? Before we leave her?"

Aelinor just watched, completely still and silent. She reached into a small sheath inside the waistband of her trousers, needing to use both hands and struggling to remove the knife she drew out. As it was drawn, Willow began to glow and lifted into the air, spinning a couple times. It was silent save for a soft buzzing sound as it slowly drifted down to rest upon the vault, the glow and the sound fading. "I will wait here," it said softly before the glow ceased entirely.

Aelinor turned around, looking down the path they had taken here. "... I am no match for Rebus," she said quietly. "I barely swung my sword before Ivisyre beat me. I was supposed to protect her, and instead, she had to sacrifice herself to protect me." Her voice was choked, her expression frustrated. "I should give you Conflict. It's useless in my hands."

  14. On 2/2/2026 at 2:24 PM, NameIess said:

"My Author is not always benevolent," Unintelligible explained "but if he says this is a peaceful resting place, I believe him." He walked through the forest a ways, until he came to a clearing. In that clearing was a simple burial vault made from mossy stone, overgrown with flowers. At its foot, the stone bore an inscription.

Ideas are not dead until forgotten.

Unintelligible looked to Aelinor. "Do you think this place will do?"

Aelinor stared down at the inscription in the stone, an unreadable expression on her face. She looked around at the clearing and the trees beyond. Finally, she looked at Sequence in Unintelligible's arms. She didn't say anything for a long moment, her expression blank. Finally, she took in a slow breath and nodded. "... Yes. She'd like it," Aelinor said softly.

  15. On 1/31/2026 at 1:38 PM, NameIess said:

It is a gift from me. spoke a voice. Sequence deserves a place to rest in peace, one that will not be disturbed. This is such a place.

Unintelligible's eyes widened. "I've heard that voice before." He said. "When I was dead. It's my Author." Without any further hesitation, he stepped forward into the forest.

Aelinor jumped again, looking around for the voice. She narrowed her eyes distrustfully at the word 'Author'. As Unintelligible stepped through the forest, Aelinor began to object. "Wait- Are you sure that- ... Okay..." She sighed and stepped through after him, looking down at her hands and trying to think of how she would hold Conflict if she needed to summon it.

  16. 17 hours ago, NameIess said:

Unintelligible was interrupted as the air in front of them split, revealing a forest of green leaves and dense vegetation. Somewhere in the near distance, the trickling of a stream could be heard.

Unintelligible blinked. "I suppose we could... walk over there."

Aelinor jumped back with alarm, whirling to face the split in the air. "Uh... Is that... Nameless's place? That you were talking about earlier?" She asked, peering through the rift with narrowed eyes. "Where did this come from?"

    12 hours ago, DragonHeir said:

"I agree to these conditions." Rebus shook Ivisyre's hand, the action resonating with certification despite the lack of visual power. Then he smiled. "If you believe that result had anything to do with practice, you have a lot to learn about being a Narrator."

Ivisyre rolled their eyes. "I'd rather not. I hate Narrators." They released Rebus's hand  and stepped back, taking a small bow. "Enjoy your rock." With that, they vanished into a puff of mist.

  17. 9 hours ago, DragonHeir said:

“Incidentally, I’d been planning to ask you for it. As you may know, I’ve been creating an empire - a real place would make an excellent addition.” Rebus smiled. “If you really do want a planet, I can make you one out of whole cloth - or you could use your Narration. You see, there are a number of dissidents who hate me and refuse to be brainwashed into forgetting I rule them - as well as the more Thread-aware among my citizens, who think it’s strange they don’t inhabit a blasted wasteland.”

Ivisyre searched Rebus's gaze for a moment. They saw a lot more than they once did... Perks of being a Narrator. "Alright. You can have it on one condition. One binding condition, Narrator to Narrator." They rose to their feet, walking down the steps at the foot of the throne towards Rebus. "Sequence's avatar will never set foot here," Ivisyre said with a somewhat content smile. "And neither will Ookla the Unintelligible, for that matter," they added. "Should you ever allow them to, dominion will return to me, and I will simply... destroy it." They extended their hand to Rebus, dark mist pooling in their palm. "Agree and the planet is yours." They cocked their head to one side, thinking for a moment. "If you create a palace here after it's yours, perhaps make a sparring ring." They smiled a sharp-toothed smile. "You could certainly use the practice."

  18. 9 hours ago, DragonHeir said:

“I came here because I wished to know what you are doing here.” Rebus spread his arms wide, indicating the castle and surrounding landscape. “But I also have an offer to make.”

    -

“Oh, just deciding what to do with this rock I’ve found… I certainly won’t be keeping it.” Ivisyre sniffed and wrinkled their nose. “It reeks of.. her, don’t you think? Sickeningly sweet and… cloudy… and patronizing. You smell it, don’t you?” They shook their head, waving a dismissive hand. “Whatever. I digress. I’ll humor you. What’s your offer?”

    3 hours ago, NameIess said:

"I was planning," muttered Unintelligible, "to shoot a hole in the fabric of reality that would allow us to escape you." He shot a brief glance at the Wizard, wondering why the aged man hadn't helped. Then he shook his head and turned to Aelinor. "Shall we be on with it?"

    @Sequence

Aelinor relaxed visibly, letting out a relieved sigh. “… Yeah. Probably.” She spared a glance at Sequence, quickly looking away and rooting her eyes on the floor beneath her feet. “I… don’t have any way of transporting us anywhere… I don’t suppose you do?”

  19. On 1/25/2026 at 8:30 PM, DragonHeir said:

"Oh, I am perfectly aware of that. I do like what you've done with the place - the evil volcanoes are a nice touch."

Ivisyre nodded slowly, the smile fading from their face until the look they fixed Rebus with was nothing short of a venomous glare. “You do not summon me,” they said flatly. “I am not a tool to be used by you to intimidate your enemies.” They leaned back in their throne, rubbing their temples softly. “Tell me what you want and be gone.”

On 1/25/2026 at 11:41 PM, NameIess said:

Unintelligible took a step towards Rebus. Just one. "You." He growled. "Are a terrible person. Once I've buried Sequence, I will fight you to my last breath, just like you want. But now, here, I am in no shape to fight. You want conflict, engagement. I am in no state of mind to provide either. Neither is Aelinor. So what will antagonizing us here accomplish?"

    4 hours ago, DragonHeir said:

“Aelinor holds Conflict, now.” Rebus grinned. “I am supposed to be a terrible  person - and I want that Blade, or to fight its wielder.”

Aelinor glanced between Unintelligible and Rebus, her expression hardening. She shook her head at Unintelligible, stepping forward. “I’ll fight you,” she said to Rebus, looking him up and down. “If you leave us alone until… this is done. Otherwise, I’m not above running away. Or hiding. Or finding a way to destroy Conflict to keep it from you.” She fixed Rebus with a glare… but there was a bit of vulnerability, a bit of pleading in her eyes. “If you truly had any respect for… Sequence, then you’d remember how she felt about violence.” Aelinor resisted glancing at Sequence’s body, gray in Unintelligible’s arms.
