We Will Rock You, Bohemian Rhapsody, We are the Champions. These are all songs by the famous rock band Queen. But the legend who sings these songs, Freddie Mercury, is a man you want to learn about. Therefore, this essay will be about Freddie Mercury, and the legacy he began. 

        Mercury was born on September 6, 1946, he was born as Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar. At age seven, Mercury was sent to study at a boarding school called St. Peter’s School in modern-day India. Im his free time, he learned to play the piano and spent time with his relatives. In his early life, He started to write Bohemian Rhapsody when he was a student at St. Peter’s School. A little later in his life, he joined the band Ibex, then played in a few others before he joined his future bandmates, creating the band we all know and love Queen.

        Mercury was the lead vocalist and creator of the band Queen, their music reached the top of U.S. and British charts in the 1970s and 80s. Then Bohemian Rhapsody hit in the top 10 in the U.S. 

        One thing that was unique about Mercury, is he had four extra teeth in the back of his mouth, creating a very unique smile for the famous singer. He was also a very shy person when he wasn’t preforming, especially around people he didn’t know and had very few interviews. One of his most famous quotes says, “When I’m preforming, I’m an extrovert. Yet Inside I’m a completely different man.”

         Mercury and Queen played all over the world, one minute they would be playing in the U.S. the next they were in Germany. He not only wrote songs with Queen, but he also wrote songs by himself. He came out with two solo albums and many singles. Although his solo songs weren’t as famous as the Queen songs, two of them hit top ten in the UK music charts.

        Later in his life, Mercury came out as gay and said, “I am what I am. So what? And that itself for some was a statement.” Meaning, just because he was gay didn’t mean he could still accomplish things. He also wasn’t afraid of publicly expressing his gayness. But he was unwilling to for others to analyze or justify his lifestyle. 

        A little after that he was then diagnosed with a disease called HIV. After he was diagnosed with HIV, he continued to record with queen until, he died of AIDS on November 24, 1991, at the age of 45.

        Freddie Mercury, left behind a legacy of rock music. His music is still popular in modern day. Bohemian Rhapsody is still one of the most famous songs in rock history. Not many people know about the man, this should inspire some to learn about the lead vocalists in popular bands.
