  1. "The beast opened its maw, and she smelled almonds before a spark lit the very air aflame."
  2. After a few minutes of searching, Jasper made his way to the ballroom doors, which curiously seemed to be barred and heavily guarded. I guess they must think all the guests have already arrived. "I do apologize, as I am sure that you are simply doing your duty, but I must ask that you step aside. It is a matter of great importance."
  3. "She could hardly see at all through the gloom of the cave, but she thought she saw th' glint of scales."
  4. Jasper grabbed the guard's wrist and jammed his knuckles into his inner elbow, forcing him to drop the sword. "I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I really must be going." Jasper shoved the guard back, then ran in what he assumed to be the direction of the ballroom.
  5. There was no immediate sign of Jasper as the guard walked in, just the chair and a pile of neatly sliced rope. Then there was a brief flash of movement as the door slammed shut behind him. "Quite loose, in fact. I suppose I should have mentioned that you'd neglected to disarm me, but it didn't occur to me at the time. I hope you'll forgive me, but I have rather pressing business to attend to."
  6. Jasper whistled tunelessly to himself for several minutes before calling out to one of the guards outside his door. "You know, the ropes binding my wrists are quite loose. I might be able to attempt an escape. If I do, I promise I'll tell the commander it wasn't your fault, but it might be better if you just came in and tightened the knots again."
  7. "I appreciate your conviction, but you will be of no help to anyone in your current state. I will travel with you at least as far as [city in Raodea] to ensure your wellbeing, if that is acceptable to you."
  8. "I regret that I can do little to help how you feel, but I find that being active helps to keep my mind from wandering, at least in the moment. You should not strain yourself yet, given that you are still in recovery, but would you mind helping me tend to the garden?"
  9. "Ooooh, I get it. You confused me with the other guy. Totally understandable mistake. I'm Jasper, remember? We met in the hall before he tried to shoot the king, which I had no part in, just so you know. Does that help clear things up?"
  10. "Well, I don't know about 'greatest', but if I were helping him why would I tell you about the weaknesses in your defenses or prevent him from escaping so you could apprehend him?"
  11. "Like I said, it would've been rude if I just hadn't showed up. And it's lucky for you that I did, isn't it? That guy probably would've gotten away otherwise."
  12. "I'm sure I would've been, but by the time I found the invitation I'd already scaled the wall, and it just seemed silly to go back at that point."
  13. "Do you think I lack knowledge of what it is like to be an instrument of carnage? So many cut down because they refused to turn aside... and because I made the choice to cut them down. Dismiss my vision of morality as absurd, if you will, but remember this: Violence is always a choice. To deny that you have made that choice, or to project it onto others, is nothing more than self-deception and cowardice. If you can say that you chose to kill, and that you feel nothing for the deaths, then I will accept that, but I do not believe that it is so."
  14. "I don't exactly live here, so I was looking for the ballroom. I suppose I must have gone in the wrong direction."
  15. "Oh, that's quite simple. My family got an invitation to a ball some time ago, and I figured that it would only be polite to come. There was a slight issue with the invitation, but I've found it."
  16. "So who's this bird person you keep mentioning? They sound rather unpleasant." Jasper stood as stiff as possible as the ropes were wrapped around him, but otherwise made no moves.
  17. "Ah, I'm sure you'll figure it out. On with the story!"
  18. Micha glared at him. "It's how the story needs ta go, ya ninny! Ain't ya never heard 'a suspense?"
  19. "Or rather, what was left of him."
  20. "You approach this with the idea that fighting is inevitable, do you not? Much of what I do is concerned with removing the need for conflict entirely, through whatever method is sensible. If I am totally unable to prevent such a conflict, which happens more often than I would care to admit, I do what I can to mitigate damage and prevent injury. If it is absolutely necessary, I will fight, but that is a last resort, taken only when I believe no other option is possible. It never ceases to amaze me how much less violence there is when people simply stop choosing to seek it out."
