  1. Dr. Gears pointed to the small Aviar on his shoulder. "I possess no innate Investiture, but I was fortunate enough to come across an Aviar in my travels. I have studied Investiture, Realmatic Theory, Alleyverse mechanics, et cetera."
  2. Dr. Gears threw a small opaque box at the withergeist. Something screamed, and something else shattered.
  3. Dr. Gears noted the existence of his appendages and took out another cookie. He threw this cookie at the ground, and smoke billowed out, smelling vaguely of mint.
  4. Evidence of plot armour, Dr. Gears wrote on his clipboard. Deus ex machina prevalent. Proceed with caution.
  5. Dr. Gears turned towards the voice. "It's not spiked. I didn't have the time to get the right kind of metal, and precision is key with this sort of thing."
  6. Dr. Gears stepped through, and the wrongness in reality fixed itself. They faded into existence in a dark alleyway.
  7. "Come with me or die here," Dr. Gears said. "I will not wait forever." The portal's edges wavered, nearly slamming shut before snapping back into stability.
  8. Dr. Gears ripped a hole in reality and said, "You are welcome to depart with me to a better time and place."
  9. "This box will not explode," Dr. Gears said. "Be not afraid." The box looked as non-threatening as a box possibly could. It was completely devoid of anything overtly ominous, and a smiley face was on the lid.
  10. The icing still tasted delicious, and the sand melted into glass. Dr. Gears handed "Abigail" another box.
  11. Dr. Gears pulled out a small box from inside his lab coat and handed it to "Abigail".
  12. "Permit," Dr. Gears said. "It's required for the procedure. Nothing important.
  13. Dr. Gears stepped up to "Abigail", staring at its eyes. "Anomalous properties." He held up a piece of paper, pressing a pen into Abigail's hand. "Sign here."
  14. It was awake now. How unfortunate. He couldn't analyse the interior of the entity. Eyes glowing red. Stormlight? Voidlight? Yes/No. EUI increasing. "Origin. Description. Containment Procedures."
  15. "Vivisection..." Dr. Gears muttered thoughtfully. "Yes/No, information, loss of information, caretaking, utility, disappointment, EUI higher if..." He took out a scalpel, stared at it for a moment, then tucked it away.
  16. Dr. Gears took out a small machine that looked similar to a Geiger counter. As he approached the woman, the faint beeping emanating from the machine grew louder and more frequent.
  17. Dr. Gears tucked his clipboard away in his pristine lab coat and pulled out a hand-and-a-half Scottish broadsword with a basket hilt. It was a magnificent sword, taken off the body of Mad Jack Churchill himself along with the bagpipes and the longbow.
  18. 13263997, 13263996, 13263995...
  19. Granted. You can only see the world a few days later than it really is. Your other senses are still aligned to the real time.
  20. Truth and Dare, thank you very much.
