Shallan is even more cringe than before
jamesbondsmith replied to Atlas's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm frustrated with her for several reasons, but I can mostly understand why she would hold the beliefs that lead to those frustrating behaviours. Although I'm still seething at her victim blaming of the bridgemen to Kaladin's face, which he's just supposed to get over. One thing I really disliked was that she suffered no consequences for killing her spren, which is exactly what the whole trial was about. Sure, she was a kid who didn't know what she was doing, but considering the spren blamed modern humans for what their ancestors did centuries ago, at very least the spren should have done something beyond giving them a cushy room to reconnect in. Not to mention the fact that they just toss cryptics at this kid who's already killed one like they're cannon fodder. -
Anyone else annoyed that Shallan did the exact thing that has the Spren so concerned about humans (without even the caveat of having done it as a partnership), and... suffers no consequences whatsoever? The cryptics sent her another one after it all! I know she was a kid who didn't know what she was doing, but Adolin and the other humans were centuries removed from the Recreance and they were still vilified as if they personally had done it. I don't think it's a proper rebuttal.

As the title says, are there still flashbacks in this book? I'm up to chapter 42 and haven't seen a single one (barring Navani's prologue).
-
I'm a bit past the end of Part One and there are spoilers in that section, but they're spoilers in the same way as knowing the identity of worldhoppers before reading their introductory book. You're like 'oh, you're in the other thing I'm reading but you're here so I know you don't die in the other thing'.

[ob] The traitor Highprince and the Rift
jamesbondsmith replied to Georion's topic in Stormlight Archive
Mate, barring a severe change of heart, I highly doubt a dude who runs the bridge crews like he does and is willing to abandon thousands of men to their deaths (including a man he's been friends with for years) is going to have an issue killing off that friend or the person who is moving him away from being a bloodthirsty warlord. Moving away from the Blackthorn is the whole reason Sadeas tried to kill Dalinar in WOK (or at least it's the one he gave). I think the better evidence that Sadeas wasn't involved was that it was sloppy as hell. If the betrayal at the Tower had worked then there would have been no witnesses, although he still got off entirely despite there being tons of witnesses. I suppose the whole 'make him angry enough to burn a city to the ground' is possible, but it seems much easier to just go with 'rocks fall, everyone dies'. -
Skybreakers can be a little valid, as a treat.
jamesbondsmith replied to Could Be Fire's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm getting the 'centuries' part from the book (pg 866 of my copy, which judging by the debates on the covers is the UK version), where they say how long it's been since someone has sworn the 5th ideal. Many of the other orders seem to base their bond on a consensus, but the highspren to an extent abdicate that responsibility to something external (albeit a consensus interpretation of that external code, which many comments have pointed out). I guess I feel uncomfortable with people defending the Skybreakers as if they are better than the other orders (e.g. the Windrunners, as some comments in this thread state). Also btw, I always interpreted the Windrunners as protecting individuals, not concepts. To use your example, a 'pro life' 3rd ideal Windrunner would protect a woman from people who would harm her for making that choice (this is just an example, please don't blow this thread to smithereens).- 48 replies

I can't help but notice there aren't many satisfactory rebuttals to my comment on the Skybreakers (and by extension law enforcement in general) that they are only as just as what they swear to follow. Also, Nale all but explicitly states that being of the 5th Ideal lets you selectively enforce whichever laws you like, with the actual penalties for crimes being irrelevant (if his murder of every Radiant he can find for whichever crimes he can pin on them is any indication). Sure, he's absolutely nuts, but this is still something that his spren is completely fine with and has been for centuries. Chapter 106 of Oathbringer he all but states that he can do that once he's reached the final ideal. Yeah, I'm slow to read, but spoiler tags on ROW content would be appreciated.- 48 replies

Stormlight Movie Possible Actors/Actresses
jamesbondsmith replied to Kvothe the Bloodless's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well now I feel dumb, because I could have sworn it said 'now it's definitely going to happen'. It's been edited, so maybe there was a typo in a really unfortunate place in the post. -
Stormlight Movie Possible Actors/Actresses
jamesbondsmith replied to Kvothe the Bloodless's topic in Stormlight Archive
OP said the movie/show is 'definitely' happening, which I think a lot of people are taking to mean that pre-production or production has started, but I'm not sure that they're that far into it. As far as I know it's just been optioned, which as I said in my post is basically the film/tv adaptation equivalent of 'we call dibs'. -
Stormlight Movie Possible Actors/Actresses

*Insert obligatory 'Rosharans look vaguely Asian/polynesian' comment here* Ken Watanabe is Dalinar for me. I keep thinking of Donnie Yen as Gavilar, but I thought of another Japanese actor to go with Watanabe and OMG he and Hiroyuki Sanada could be so good. These two look like they could go around messing up the other Highprinces 6a2481d5c4a6414a830bf07fdc408c30--hiroyuki-sanada-the-year.jpg (612×453) (pinimg.com) Sammo Hung as Sadeas Batista as Rock Lucy Liu or Michelle Yeoh for Navani Steven Yeun for Kaladin, although he's probably too old for the part. Morena Baccarin for Jasnah (not too close to the ethnicity part, but I saw it in a tor fancast and can't get it out of my head) Wit doesn't really have to conform to the ethnicity as he's a worldhopper, although I think he's meant to be better at fitting in than others. I imagine him as Tom Hiddleston Szeth I struggle with a live action actor, as he's just One Punch Man I'm not hugely familiar with Asian/Polynesian actors, so that's what I have so far. As for confirmation I think it's been optioned, which means the production company basically called dibs on being able to do it but haven't started doing anything yet. -
Maybe it's already been stated in this thread, but I just had to point this out. Oathbringer (not onto ROW yet. Yeah, I read slowly, sue me)

Considering the focus House Venture gets, I doubt Kelsier and Marsh would be Ventures. It would have been noted at some point, unless it was one of the 'distant cousins we don't speak about' kind of families. Then again, given the kind of person Straff is, I could definitely imagine 'not mentioning certain relatives' would equate to 'destroy all records and threaten/actually execute any staff who might know'.

Things Hoid is not allowed to do in the Cosmere
jamesbondsmith replied to jamesbondsmith's topic in Cosmere Discussion
24) I cannot use 'Shardcoconuts' to pretend I have a Ryshadium. -
This is inspired by Skippy's List, a list of things a member of the US Army apparently tried or was spontaneously told he was not allowed to do. I think the domain name for the original list may have expired, but google searches will find reprints or summaries. I think spoilers should comply with the general policy (which is spoiler tags/general no-no until 9 months post-release, if I remember correctly). I'd be interested in other people's contributions. 1) Not allowed to convince Nightblood that pineapples are evil. 2) The Windrunners are named so because of their flight abilities, and not because they like to fart and run away. 3) Not allowed to Awaken clothing while still being worn by the owner. 4) Unless it's Sadeas. 5) When a Radiant's spren is giving them encouragement during 'intimate moments', the correct response is to tell them to give them privacy, not join in the chanting. 6) Koloss are not to be referred to as 'Hulky Smurfs'. 7) Instant noodles are not worth diverting an entire planet's technological development for. 8) Shardbearers are not 'compensating for something'. 9) Neither was the architect of Urithiru. 10) I cannot copyright a colour and demand royalties from every Awakener who drains it. 11) Mistborn does not mean 'anyone who was born outside'. 12) Consulting a Feruchemist's coppermind to learn about the past is fine. Using it to try and figure out what I did while blackout drunk is not. 13) Adonalsium should be referred to by their full name, not 'Daddy Ady'. 14) I should not set all of Bavadin's avatars against each other. Even if I brought snacks for everyone else. 15) Gloryspren come from winning a hard fought battle, not finishing an entire banquet by myself. 16) The Sharts of Adonalsium do not exist. 17) Adolin Kholin is not a 'shartbearer'. 18) Must pretend that Raoden masquerading as 'Spirit' is not an obvious alias. 19) Drawing a smiley face in the sand does not mean every Aon now needs one. 20) Must not encourage Wayne.

Candidates For the Six Remaining Shards (A Simple Theory)
jamesbondsmith replied to a topic in Cosmere Discussion
I could see this being the final Cosmere Big Bad, although the 'freedom to do what you want' interpretation of Autonomy seems to be why people think Autonomy is the main villain. Justice could be (at least partially) served by Odium alone, as several definitions of the word describe it as 'hatred incurred by someone's actions'. Rayse is supposed to be particularly nasty, so 'actions incurring hatred' could just be 'looked at me funny'. As for any additions of my own, I'm not nearly well versed enough in religion to tell if Brandon is taking inspiration from 'real world' divine attributes, and there are too many different attributes for me to say 'this is it'. -
Unpopular Brandon Sanderson Opinions
jamesbondsmith replied to not an Evil Librarian's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Maybe someone wouldn't get sexually assaulted every other page if he did. Also, hasn't GRRM stated that no-one is to finish it, and any manuscripts to be destroyed if he dies before finishing ASOIAF? -
Sorry, I must not have seen it. I did make it myself, but it's apparently an obvious one

Well hopefully he doesn't go with the Oedipus/elektra complex side of Freud. Hasn't Freud largely been discredited in serious psychology, though? Not that it stops authors using the theories. -
Skybreakers can be a little valid, as a treat.
jamesbondsmith replied to Could Be Fire's topic in Stormlight Archive
I said it in another thread, but the skybreakers suffer from one of the main issues as real world law enforcement, in that they are only as just as the laws they serve. I like your idea, but some people have a warped sense of 'justice' to begin with. I haven't started ROW yet, but I'd like to know how Nale convinced everyone that he was stable enough to be followed unquestioningly.- 48 replies
