    "Right now?" Fadran let out a breath. "Changing our game plan."

    Ivian waved him away. "I can fend for myself, Kimby. Go enjoy the party." More than I am, anyways. The waitress uniform for official events wasn't Wendy's favorite. She already wore a tunic underneath it for the back and sides, but there wasn't anything she could do for her arms. Wendy glanced around for something to throw over her shoulders, but there wasn't anything decent just lying around the dormitories. It's fine. She told herself. Compared to what the other guests would be wearing, bare arms weren't anything much. You've had worse. After splashing some water over her face, Wendy left the dormitories and made her way to the ballroom.

    "Oh... mal. Look at me, rambling like a sentimental person." Ivian waved at Nicolae dismissively. "Go enjoy the party, Kimby. I can serve my own wine, despite popular belief." He put on a sly smile. "Isn't there a certain waitress that you need to ask for a dance?"

    "I don't understand a lot of things." Mostly why Q deemed me at all worthy to love. Ellis looked out after where Y fled to. "Now... we really need that amulet. To save Q."

    Ivian was quiet for a moment, then said, "I wasn't exactly... fatherlike to you."

    "Please, Kimby. Don't pretend like I've been a good man to you." What in mal am I saying? "I'd... prefer forgiveness over gratitude."

    "She was with us until she--" Ellis hesitated, then took in a breath. "Listen, who even are you? Where did you come from?"

    "Kimby. Listen to me." Ivian glanced over his shoulder to make sure nobody was listening. "I don't exactly keep up with your love life. All of that's your choice and frankly it's none of my business. So as long as you're being responsible, then you're fine."

    "I--" Ivian closed his mouth for a moment, then said, "I figured it'd be rude to assume it was the lady who caused it."

    "Listen. She'll probably be here tonight." Ivian set down his cup and leaned in. "Just try to see if you can fix whatever rift it is you made. If you just absolutely can't... then I'll find someone else. But I really do think that you're the best for the job."

    Ivian let out a sigh. "I figured you'd mention that. To be completely honest, Kimby, I don't know."

    "A lot of things. And it's not my special evening. My mother planned it for me." Ivian glanced over at Louis, who was currently making a young man in his early twenties look very uncomfortable.
