    Wendy smiled and pressed a kiss into Ara's cheek. "Alright, honey. But don't eat too much. I don't want you complaining about a tummyache tomorrow, okay?"

    Rolling her eyes, Wendy put her arms around the two of them. "Alright."

    Wendy sighed, then glanced out from underneath the table. "Well... it's almost ten o'clock. You can stay until then." "But you said we could stay up until ten thirty!" Katie protested.

    Wendy crossed her arms. "You're not supposed to be here." "Why not?" Katie asked, stuffing a brownie into her mouth defiantly.

    After mopping up a pool of spilled wine off someone's table, Wendy spotted something moving out of the corner of her eye; then turned to see none other than Katie and Arabella waving at her from under the dessert table. She glanced around to make sure no one was watching her, then strode over to and ducked under the table. "What in the stars are you doing?"

    Giggling uncontrollably, Katie peeked underneath the tablecloth. "Hey look! There's Wendy!"

    "Three... two... one... go!" Katie darted through the tray and underneath a covered table.

    After about a minute, the tray finally stopped. Katie peeked out for just a moment, then whispered, "okay, when I say go, we leave through right here. Kay?"

    "Shh." Katie held a finger to Ara's lips.

    As soon as the waitstaff had found someone to clean up the mess, everyone started getting back to business; meaning someone started pushing the cart into the ballroom.

    The staff shouted and started flocking over to where the vase had shattered. "Quick! Into the cart!" Katie tiptoed across the room then dove into the covered tray cart. The next person Ivian ran into was his mother. "Whoa. Mom." He grabbed her shoulders and steadied her. Looking up into his eyes drunkenly, Louis grinned. "'Appy birthday, m'boy..." "How much did you drink?" Ivian demanded, grabbing a chair and sitting her down in it. "You shouldn't be out right now; and especially not here. There are... crazy men. I've seen what they'll do if they can find a maid or even a visiting noblewoman." "Ain't... nuffin' those boys would want with an old lady like m'self." Louis hiccuped. "They aren't picky." "Listen, Ivian, baby." Her hand groped for his shoulder. "Y'know, the last time somebody took me to bed, the best thing in my life happened." She smiled. "You." Ivian was speechless. "Now, I'm not saying that you should go find and rape the next girl you see to give her a kid that'll grow up to be a good and honorable not just man but king, but..." Louis sniffed and wiped her face, despite the fact that there was nothing there, "but maybe sometimes the ends justify the means, y'know?" "I... you need to get some sleep." Ivian decided. "You're in no condition to be wandering the castle." Louis waved him off dismissively. "Who am I kidding... there ain't anything left for me to teach you. You're a big boy now; you can fend for yourself. Welp..." She stood up and stretched, wobbling slightly. "Maybe I'll take you up on that. Hopefully I can find my room..." With that, Ivian's mother walked off.

    Ivian groaned quietly and rubbed his forehead. At least there was one thing taken care of. With the Raveness gone, he turned to leave and return to the party; but someone placed a hand on his shoulder and stopped him. "We need to talk." Yvonne said. Turning around, Ivian nodded. "Yes? Please, I'll take any excuse to stay away from that blasted party." "Your plan. It's..." She struggled for the words. "It's... barbaric, Ivian, it's--" "I'm not following through." He inturrupted. Yvonne fell silent. "What?" "At least, not for... y'know." Ivian rolled his hand indicatively. "The part you didn't like. I'll come up with something." "You--you will?" "Yes." Ivian nodded. "Especially seeing as how it isn't even going according to plan, and also... I have the heart of a coward inside me. I couldn't make myself do such a thing no matter what the outcome." She didn't say a word. One hand pressed against her forehead, and the other drifted down to her side. "Will that be all?" Ivian asked. Nodding, Yvonne answered, "yes, my lord. That will be all."

    "I will have your husband retrieve you in the morning," Ivian said as the guards grabbed the Raveness. "And consider yourself relieved of your duty, Ex-Raveness Riva Thadel. Good night." The guards closed the door behind them as they half-dragged, half-carried her to the dungeons.

    "As you said, Thadel, this isn't funny. You clearly aren't joking and neither am I." Ivian waved at the guards. "Take her away. If she resists, you may use force."

    "Guards," Ivian said calmly, "take this woman to the dungeons. She is under arrest for threatening crimes against the kingdom."

    "If you so desire, I could draft you into the military. Perhaps Caden could find better use of you as a soldier than a wife."

    "Perhaps," Ivian said, stepping away again, "it's about time that you retired."

    Ivian stepped up close to her face--it smelled sickeningly sweet--and stared her in the eyes. "No."
