    A messenger dashed into the throne room. "My lord! General Gladius has sent his full report. He has accomplished his goal, killing Calano and capturing the Lady of Shadows. She awaits your judgement, my lord."

    Lark shook his head in annoyance and went on his way, content to ignore Thaidakar's warnings. Although, now that the chickens were gone, the clinic did need some better security. Perhaps he could get the guardians up and running again, although the thought of how much power that would take made him feel a bit queasy.

    Lark sighed. "What are you blathering about Thaidakar? And why are you made of water?"

    Lark stumbled as if struck. "Ah, excuse me, Ranyru. I'll have my assistant send your family their contract." Suddenly feeling exhausted, he limped from the room.

    "Alright, let's go then."

    "All right. Repairmen and a cook. Sounds good to me. They can start immediately. The kitchens are a bit of a mess right now, and the plumbing's never worked quite right."

    "All right. What kind of job do they want?"

    "They can get on my good side by telling me their qualifications."

    Lark sighed. "Ranyru, are these your relatives?"

    "We tie the Noot up and leave it hanging helplessly, then wait in the shadows to sneak attack the beast while it feeds."

    Lark walked into the interview room, observing the twelve people inside with a discerning eye. "So, what are your qualifications for this job?"

    "YES! BUT THEY'RE ALL DIGESTED AND DISGUSTING!"

    "There's a very high probability he'd get eaten doing that." The sack began squirming wildly.

    "You think you could have convinced the Noot to go get eaten by a giant monster?"

    Esmerelda knocked Noot over the head with the pommel of her sword and stuffed him into a sack.

    Lark was optimistic as he began rebuilding the clinic. The first thing he fixed was the destroyed library, and this time he made sure to put in a state-of-the-art magical fire suppression system to prevent further unfortunate incidents. After that, he took the opportunity to renovate many of the destroyed halls, putting in library outposts to help with the controlled distribution of Sanderson books. After all the fighting, he needed a lot more staff, so he put out a 'help wanted' sign and began taking applications. All in all, things were looking up.

    "...Emma? Are you alright?" Nameless' voice sounded concerned. "Did something happen at the clinic?"

    "Excellent. Now, where was that Noot?"

    "Very well. Bookwyrm, you're off the hook for now."

    Emma heard a familiar voice beside her. "Hey, Emma! Glad to see you're finally awake. How's the clinic doing?"
