  1. "ANNOYANCE?" Lark's eyes went jet-black as he stalked towards Thaidakar. "You think I have done all this to be an ANNOYANCE?"
  2. The beast regenerated in an instant immediately turned all twenty-seven of its eyes on to the Shisi, licking its lips hungrily.
  3. Esmerelda shouted, throwing her sword into the beast's eye and slipping free while it roared in agony. "Blast! That regeneration is impossible to get around. We need a new plan if we're going to get the key."
  4. Lark's eyes glowed crimson and the amber burned to ash, treaty flying back into his hands, its destruction stopped. Even as he did so, rips began forming all across the clinic. Rups into emptiness, nothingness. The fabric of reality stretched, and Thaidakar felt a shockwave pass through his soul, threatening to drag him into those rips. "You FOOL!" Lark stepped towards Thaidakar, towering over him in pure rage. "Do you have ANY idea what you could have done? Destroy the treaty and you destroy this entire DIMENSION, and EVERYONE inside of it." Chains sprouted from the ground, wrapping around Thaidakar's legs and dragging him down into the ground. "You would have destroyed all I have worked for. Everything I've sacrificed for. All gone, because you didn't want me to win. Well, you know what? I won't win Thaidakar. I can't win. Does that make you happy?"
  5. Anger flashed in Lark's eyes. "You don't know what you're doing, Thaidakar. you think holding that treaty gives you power? You're wrong."
  6. Lark froze for a moment, then sighed. "Give that back now Thaidakar."
  7. Esmerelda shouted from the darkness, voice punctuated by the ringing of sword against scales. "Bookwyrm you fool! You Narrated it around the wrong corner!"
  8. "What? You have a copy of the files? Storms, how did Calano keep the place from falling apart?" Lark set the treaty down on the table, holding out his hand to Thaidakar. "Hand it over."
  9. "Really? That... does sound like something that the idiot would do." Lark narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "How did you find out about this?"
  10. "No, I don't think that's a good id-" Esmerelda was cut off as a giant clawed hand dragged her backwards into the darkness behind them.
  11. "What do you mean? You don't have to be included on the treaty in order to be under my power. Everything in this dimension is controlled by me. It's not as if there's some sort of exception for the chickens... is there?" Lark unrolled the treaty, scanning down the lines again. "No, I don't see one."
  12. Lark waved a hand dismissively. "Of course they're outside of this dimension! I would be able to feel their presence if they were here."
  13. "She will not forgive me. And do you really think I'd be foolish enough to leave the clinic? I'd be practically powerless outside of this dimension."
  14. Lark was shaking his head before Thaidakar was finished. "No. Emma would never stand for such a plan. I suspect that even once she discovers that Calano is alive, she will still hate me for the damage that his death and revival have done. And with her powers, she stands a chance against me, even with the treaty. Even if I prove victorious in the subsequent battle, I know of no one who can contain her besides the Chickens. The basement could have done it once, but no longer. So to rescue her would mean either my death or hers. Your deal will not work."
  15. "What kind of an arrangement? You get this," Lark held up the clinic treaty "and I get a dagger in the chest?"
  16. "You're still banned from the library, by the way. Three days left till you're allowed back in."
  17. "No, I'm not going to kill him while your back is turned. I'll make sure he's properly treated, same as I would any other patient. If you have a problem with that, I can lock you up in the basement."
  18. "He's not trying to kill me right now. And he's obviously not in his right mind."
  19. Esmerelda noticed the Narration and squinted off into the shadow beyond the trap. "I don't see it. Are you sure you Narrated it properly?"
  20. Lark coughed angrily. "Excuse me everyone. I know you're all very excited to see that Calano's still alive, but he is, in fact, rather badly wounded. He needs medical treatment immediately. Unless, perhaps, you would like him to die again? I thought not." Lark summoned a floating stretcher, waving a hand and lifting Calano up onto it.
  21. "Strange. If it follows its pattern, then it should have been here by now."
  22. Half an hour later, the group had the trap ready.
  23. Lark approached the pair, frowning. Why was Calano giving Bookwyrm some sort of blue purple substance? Why wasn't he flying into a rage, determined to take vengeance on Lark for all that he'd done to the clinic? "Calano? What are you and Bookwyrm doing?"
  24. "Of course, my lord. Immediately." The messenger ran off on to do as the king demanded.
