The necromancer nods slowly. "I understand." He stands up, shadows returning to his eyes, and addresses the whole group. "I'm leaving now, but I will be back. Count yourselves lucky your friend Sleeper was powerful enough to exhaust my power." He vanishes in a flash of violet light.

"It's more... complicated than you think. If she were only dead..." The necromancer closes his eyes. "Wraith. Do you want to stop forgetting things?"

"You can't think that way! It's always worth it to keep living!" "I..." The darkness covering the necromancer fades away. "I... you're right. I don't want her to hurt. I'll have to... make sure she doesn't hurt, when I find a way to bring her back."

Shovel man grabs Altair again. "Stop! You'll only get yourself killed!"

"Less of a fool than I thought then." The necromancer slams a hand into the ground and chains of energy burst out of it, wrapping around the demon and dragging it into the earth "YOU KNOW NOTHING!" The necromancer turns from the demon to face Xiylna again, shadows deepening around him until he was almost invisible "You don't know her, you only know your own experience. So STOP TRYING TO GUILT ME INTO STOPPING! It won't work. I've come too far to stop now." Someone grabs Altair from behind. "I can't let you do this!"

The necromancer throws up a shield to block the shockwave, but is still obliterated by it. He pulls himself back together moments later, a drop of sweat on his face. "Fool. I work for the One of Worlds out of convenience, nothing more." The necromancer spins on Xiylna angrily. "That's because it wasn't done right! I will do it right, and it will work, and she will be back!" Shadows gather around him, and violet energy wraps around Xiylna, sending shocks of energy through her intangible form. "You don't know her. You don't know what she'd want. I do."

The necromancer crouches down next to Sleeper, hand becoming wreathed in shadow. "Free? No. I will never be free so long as I live. Not until she is returned."

"What was that? I couldn't quite hear."

The necromancer raises an eyebrow as he reforms from the dust. "Did he really just heal me after going to all that effort to kill me? A terrible plan. Not that it matters. As I was about to explain to him, the most lethal spell any necromancer will ever learn is not an offensive spell. Attempting to raise the dead is far more lethal than any attack I could pull off." His fingers light up with crackling energy. "Who's next?"

The necromancer crumbles into dust, completely eradicated by Sleeper's attack.

"No. I suspect it is a matter of who needs what. Do you know the most lethal necromantic spell?"

The Necromancer chuckles as Sleeper tries to cut out his heart. "Perhaps you don't understand. Do you know the most lethal form of magic?" The scythe disintegrates as Xiylna Taints it, but the wound it caused Sleeper remains. A shield of bones bursts from the ground between the griffin and the necromancer as the energy holding Altair's sword begins wrapping around his arm as well.

The necromancer snaps his fingers, and a line of violet energy wraps around Altair's blade and holds it in place. "You're some kind of demon summoner then? Interesting power, but it will not save you." The necromancer ignores the flames, scythe spinning through the air to hit Sleeper from behind.

"I suppose that does make you a good candidate." The necromancer's bone scythe lifted itself off the ground and swung towards Altair's head.

The fire split around him. "I'm afraid I have to." "That is correct. I am beyond being hurt by anything any of you can do." The shadows around the necromancer's eyes darkened again, deepening until his eyes vanished into twin pools of darkness. "It's time to get on with this. Who wants to die first?"

"Don't worry, you don't. I think it's better to be alive than dead. Although... I could make all your friends into wraiths like you instead of hurting them. If you all surrendered, that is."

"Well, you must know wrong. Talking about deep personal trauma doesn't always make things better."

"If I knew you'd kill yourself like that, I wouldn't have bothered fighting you." "I agree. I don't have any personal experience in the matter obviously, but I've talked to a number of dead people and the resounding majority agree that being dead is pretty good."

The necromancer hesitates, then nods. “Fine.” “Oh, I don’t disagree. But there is a purpose to my meanness.”

The necromancer looks more closely at Xiylna, and the shadows covering his eyes seemed to fade slightly. “She is not alright. It is a common ailment among wraiths, particularly those who were young when they died.” He shakes his head, then slashes his scythe toward’s Sleeper’s head.

The man with shadowed eyes laughs. "Go ahead and try. I would not be a very good necromancer if I feared a single wraith." As the wave of fire nears him, it is sucked into his scythe and transformed into shadow. "Oh, I do not intend to stop unless you force me to." the ground beneath Sleeper trembles, then erupts as a massive skeletal hand rips out of the ground and closes around him. "Not completely sure? What is that supposed to mean? We're all going to die?"

"Oh. Wait, so why can a nightmare come out here? Shouldn't he be stuck in the fortress?"

"It does sound more alliterative. What's the Final Stronghold again?" -- The man with shadowed eyes allows Sleeper's blade to hit him, and it sinks hilt-deep into his torso. He looks down at the blade, then shrugs. "Was something supposed to happen? Perhaps you forget, I am a necromancer. That sword will not be enough to kill me." He steps backward, pulling away from the blade that had impaled him, then assumes a fighting stance again. "Still want to keep fighting?"

The shadows around the man's eyes deepen, confident smile dropping from his face. "I do not want to hurt any of you, but my pain cannot end until shovel man is dead. And as for the rest of you, the One of Worlds will succeed in her goals. This is inevitable. The best chance I have to succeed is to gain her favor." The man moves just as fast as Sleeper, easily stopping the strike to his neck with his scythe. "Impressive speed you have. But speed won't be enough to kill me." He retaliates with a series of blurringly fast blows, shadows twisting around his scythe as it sliced through the air. "The final fortress? Is that bad?"

"You think to beat me on your own? Arrogant. Very well though, I accept your challenge." The man with shadowed eyes raises his scythe, then swings it down to launch an arc of violet energy.
