From what Khriss says in AU and Brandon says in WoBs, it sounds like a Radiant spren is a Radiant spren because it embodies the Surges it grants (and several also seem tied to the Essence of the order). So in the case of the Bondsmith spren, they are presumably Bondsmith spren because they are direct personifications of the Surges of Adhesion and Tension, and perhaps the Essence of Sinew (a metaphorical way of saying "the things that hold the world together" or something like that?), not necessarily just because of Investiture or a Shardic association.

(Worth noting also that the intelligent spren had to be created by the Shards, even if Surgebinding wasn't an expected outcome, so that may also play a role.)

Ooh, that makes Ba-Ado-Mishram even more likely to be Bondsmith capable, she did seem to be integral to Roshar from what Kalak said!

Unsealed metalminds are real weird. You don't actually have to consciously tap or even know about the nicrosil portion for it to take effect, touching it just automatically grants the power. (The Bands of Mourning don't actually behave at all similarly to other medallions in... pretty much any regard, they seem a lot more just like normal metalminds anyone can use. My theory is that rather than being a 32-power medallion like people in-world think, they're just a one-power medallion that allows you to use Feruchamical nicrosil, and then a bunch of normal nicrosilminds.)

You think they're connected to a bunch of other metalminds like a... metalmind-net or metalmind-hive? Hmm... but they themselves were forged of many metals (which in seems weird, now that I think about it) and I think Wax or Marasi would've noticed the connection

What would happen if you created a Lifeless with more Breath then is necessary? Would they be more or completely human or just a Lifeless that's holding more Breath?

    Brandon Sanderson

Lifeless with more Breath are an interesting situation. It's quite possible for the BREATH to start taking on a personality, much like a Cognitive Shadow, related to the individual. Whether or not it is actually them, though, is a big question. Note, this doesn't always happen. Often, dumping a lot of Breath in them is like sticking it in an inanimate object with no Command.

    There's also this:

    Spoiler

    Oudeis16

If Bob the Awakener Awakened fifty straw men to dance around, then died, then Returned as FormerBob the Appropriately Named, would FormerBob be able to reclaim the Breath from the straw men in the normal fashion (once he learned the "Your Breath to Mine" Command)?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. He has enough of his original Identity, and the spiritual connection would remain.

    sonofstannis

What if he instead were reincarnated as a lifeless? Is there a way he could reclaim it then?

    Brandon Sanderson

Lifeless have someone else's investiture replacing their own. (As opposed to Returned, who are augmented.) Depends on how much of them is left, and if they can achieve sapience again, but I'd say this is unlikely.

    WeiryWriter

What if the Lifeless is Awakened with their own Breath? (i.e. they gave it away right before they died and the person they gave it to then used it in the Awakening)

    Brandon Sanderson

This has happened already in the world, and it does help.

    -Nayrb

    Did this happen "on screen"?

    Brandon Sanderson

    RAFO.

This situation seemed to have happened to Arsteel / Clod

    Quote

    Joeh42

In Warbreaker, is Clod the Lifeless body of Arsteel? I like this idea because Arsteel would have had some Breaths within him when he died, as this is how Vashir defeated him and Denth, and this could help explain why he seems to be a little more self-aware than most Lifeless. Could you respond to this idea?

    Brandon Sanderson

I confirmed in the Warbreaker annotations that Clod is Arsteel.

Clod is more self-aware than most Lifeless. There is something left of Arsteel within Clod. The Breaths that Vasher gave him when he killed him do have an effect on this.

    Tor.com Q&A with Brandon Sanderson (Jan. 10, 2011)

So, yeah that's the current theory

oh hell yeah. First of the sun is so cool, I would love this novel for sure!

Same! Brandon had said that he had two stories planned on First of the Sun:

    1) Sixth of the Dusk sequel (for which we also got an advanced reading)

    2) A YA book (this one, called Kingmaker)

(there's also the tentatively titled Dust Brigade set on Threnody about people going to try to reclaim the Homeland from the Evil. I'm really looking forward to that one!)

  5. It could be possible that Honor fundamentally altered how the other Surges functioned but with the Bondsmith Surges, he didn't change how the Surges functioned, just suppressed them. So, with him gone, or even before that, with him gone cuckoo, Bondsmiths started to be able to access the full potential of their Surges, but the other Surges would remain the same, because they weren't being regulated but were actually fundamentally changed.

  6. Probably not, why would a Worldhopper be in the position of the Rosharan Red? I think these are probably two different people.

I think one of Chesterton's bandits, or bounty hunters after his bandits, was also named Red. Pretty sure he died though.

  7. 16 hours ago, Trusk'our said:

What do you think that he might have meant then?

I think this tweak is something inherent to Allomancy. It's possible that it might require mechanical Allomancy to pull off, but it shouldn't require other Shards' Investiture to pull of. Honestly, I don't think it would necessitate mechanical Allomancy either, for eg Marsh did talk about how he learned to figure out which of his emotions were being soothed or rioted, iirc, so I think this is also a trick that can be learned. I think that A-Bronze is a tool that can be used to detect active Investiture, with in-built instructions on how to detect Allomancy, so to speak. It can probably detect Allomancy easier because it's from the same magic system.

  8. 11 hours ago, Firerust said:

That makes sense. But is this all confirmed or just the most likely conjecture? Like, should I take this question to Brandon if/when I get the chance or is it safe to assume this is the case?

Not confirmed by Brandon. I don't think you should ask him this though, this is central to the plot, you'll just get a Read And Find Out

  9. Oh, I forgot that Lifesense could feel the quantity and even quality of Breath of others. So, they should be capable of detecting Invested people.

Would holding Breaths mix with the Allomantic bronze power? The individual might just be left with two separate ways of detecting Investiture. Plus, I don't think this is what Brandon had in mind with "tweak"

  10. I noticed that too! But sadly, Taravangian's body still dissolved into Investiture upon his Ascension, so he likely got healed. Given what condition Szeth himself got "healed" from, I do think getting an entire Shard would heal death via stab wound (Szeth stabbed him with a knife, not Nightblood), and the Ascension was near immediately after dying, so his spiritweb likely got reattached.

    Quote

Szeth had long since climbed to his feet and sheathed Nightblood. Beside him, the assassin had found a burned-out corpse, mostly eaten by the sword’s attack. That was Rayse, Taravangian’s predecessor, but Szeth wasn’t able to tell. The sword had consumed clothing and most of the flesh, leaving bits of stone-grey bone.
They think that’s me, Taravangian thought, reading the possible futures. Szeth didn’t see what happened to me spiritually. He doesn’t know Odium was here.

But... his Cultivation given boon bane split still seemed to exist

    Quote

In this new role, Taravangian had two sides. On one was his knowledge: ideas, understandings, truths, lies … Thousands upon thousands of possible futures opened up to him. Millions of potentials. So numerous that even his expanded godly mind was daunted by their variety.
On the other side was his fury. The terrible fury, like an unbridled storm, churned and burned within him. It too was so overwhelming he could barely control it.

    Quote

Free to destroy! To burn! To wreak havoc and terror upon those who had doubted him!
No. No, free to plan. To devise a way to save the world from itself. He could see so far! See so much! He needed to think.
    To burn!
    No, to plot!

    Questioner

Can it be restored? The Splinters...

    Brandon Sanderson

Um, Splinters, can they be restored to... So it is, that is a yes, but restoring them will not restore Honor, the Vessel of Honor, right. They would restore Honor the Shard if this were to happen, but a new Vessel would have to take it.

    Questioner

Ok so, [Adonalsium] can be put back together?

    Brandon Sanderson

Adonalsium? It is theoretically possible to put a Shard back into, you know, to meld Shards together. The fact that we have already seen someone meld powers, in Sazed. So yes, but the question is who or what was Adonalsium, and is putting it back together going to do anything? Or...

Arcanum Unbounded Seattle signing (Dec. 1, 2016)

It would depend, if there was someone who was like a Vessel of Adonalsium, then they're just dead, so joining them together won't bring them back. If Adonalsium was the power itself, then would joining the Shards remake it, or would it create another new entity?

The Dawnshard mural does imply that they were used to Shatter Adonalsium, each of them pulling apart four Shards, but we have no solid confirmation from Brandon, nor any bigger hints in the books yet.

  12. I think they just steal kinetic Investiture, Investiture that is actively maintaining an ability. Allomancy is a bit iffy in that it gives access to a store of energy corresponding to the metal swallowed (if they're a Mistborn, that is, otherwise a Misting's corresponding metal), and that Allomancers aren't necessarily always burning those stores but iirc, Leechers pull away not just metals their target is currently burning but their entire metal reserves. That can mean that either, having a metal reserve is itself an active effect, which is very possible, or that the power itself is built to not just swallow a person's spark of life, which is just as likely, as that goes with Preservation's Intent. If the former is true, hacking the ability to get a death touch may be easier and artificial Allomancy via Southern Scadrial tech might be capable of it in the future.

Yes, I was not questioning whether Stormlight can help plants, just whether that happens 'naturally' since I think we always see it due to singer or human intervention. Plants are generally closed up during Highstorms. But I think it is a normal part of the Rosharan ecosystem.

I think so too, but I'm mostly assuming because of the presence of Lifespren and the fact that we've seen some spren draw energy from Stormlight reflexively

  14. I could only find these two WoBs on the subject –

This, which might refer to the quote you hunted down:

    Questioner

is the title 'Shadows of Self' a reflection on the character development if Wax, or another thing like Kandra.

    Brandon Sanderson

The answer is yes. If you look through the previous Mistborn books, I actually used the phrase 'shadow of self' at some point.

Shadows of Self Portland signing (Oct. 10, 2015)

    and this:

    Questioner

My other question is about the phrase "Shadows of Self".  It's mentioned in the last Mistborn book *audio obscured* so are we ever going to see the shadows in Shadows of Self?

    Brandon Sanderson

We are not going-- Well yes and no. What it is referencing in this book is the different roles that each person plays in their life. That is the core meaning of Shadows of Self. But then, there is also, there is a kandra involved, which they change shape and become different people, so "who are you?" and identity is a big thing.

Firefight Seattle Public Library signing (Jan. 7, 2015)

So, I think technically the title refers to the roles and identities that people play but it might also be a hidden reference to something (Who knows, maybe the Trell is Kelsier theory is going to turn out to be true)

The natural ecosystem of Roshar uses Stormlight (via gemhearts - and maybe Rosharan plants benefit from it?)

Yup, it's mentioned that that's what the Listeners used to grow their food during the War of Reckoning on the Shattered Plains. In RoW, this method is tried on Urithiru. It's mentioned by Raboniel that Lifelight works even better than Stormlight for plants.

Allomancers have a direct conduit to Preservation, so they don't need to use the Mists for fuel. Technically, the Mists can be used as fuel, we see this with Vin, and Allomantic power overflowing looks like the Mists too, as seen with the Bands of Mourning, but, Allomancers and Feruchemists simply aren't built to draw it in under normal circumstances. They pull power from the Spiritual Realm.

For Radiants, the spren kinda take over the role of the metals as well as the sDNA, I suspect, and instead of pulling power from the Spiritual, they use Stormlight that's regularly distributed by the Highstorms.

It seems like having more Investiture or more of a Connection to Preservation, or Harmony, can allow them to draw in the Mists. The spren are more Connected to Honor and Cultivation, being their Splinters, so the Nahel Bond allows Surgebinders to draw in Stormlight. The spren themselves are also seen drawing energy from Stormlight, so it kinda makes sense for them to share that ability with their Radiants.

  16. Let's not forget this interesting bit from the Rhythm of War Harmony's letters epigraphs

That said, the most worrying thing I discovered in this was the wound upon the Spiritual Realm where Ambition, Mercy, and Odium clashed—and Ambition was destroyed. The effects on the planet Threnody have been … disturbing.
