  1. Aln narrowed her eyes a bit. Why did he keep emphasizing something bad happening to the library? It would have been nothing on its own, but there were just too many coincidences here for her to feel completely at ease. Something about this guy seemed a little off. What do you think? She mentally asked her spren. There was silence for a moment, then the familiar, quiet voice spoke into her mind. "I don't know. There's no evidence that there's anything suspicious about this guy." I know, responded Aln, but I'm still uncertain about letting him copy my books. "You already let him read it. Why is this different?" Aln sighed a bit. The spren was right. She couldn't justify refusing. "I suppose you may," she said. "Just be careful with the book."
  2. Aln nodded thoughtfully. "I've always wondered myself whether it comes from a Cognitive bond or a Spiritual one. I suspect that it involves Spiritual Connection; a spiritweb seems to be a consistent factor in most other forms of Investiture. Of course, many of those also involve the interference of one or more Shards, and I have so far been unable to uncover any evidence of the impact of any particular Shard. That doesn't mean that one wasn't involved, of course, but it doesn't seem to fit the same pattern as the others, especially since they have been seen on multiple Shardworlds. And their form is unusually malleable to be contained by a single spiritweb." She stopped abruptly, and shook her head. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ramble at you. I've done some research on the subject myself, and was excited for a chance to discuss. Please let me know what you find."
  3. As a lifelong Potterfan, I feel that I have to throw my own two cents in here. I read the series when I was 6 years old (finishing shortly after my seventh birthday), and I believe that Harry Potter really kickstarted my love of the fantasy genre, and for books in general. I can't speak as well for the impact it had on the world as a whole, as I wasn't around when it was published, but I can say that it had an impact on my life. My younger brother recently finished the books (he's 6 as well) and it's been amazing to see how invested he became in the world so quickly. The best part is, when he was done he immediately started looking for more things to read. Personally, I connected with many of my childhood friends over a shared love of Harry Potter, and reread the series countless times throughout elementary and middle school. When it comes down to it, people love these books. I'm not saying that everyone does, but it's created one of the biggest fanbases in the world. That's a decent indication that they did what they set out to do; bringing joy to children. Yes, they're full of inconsistencies, confusing messages, and the occasional generic plot point, but that's because they're kid's' books. I doubt that there are many other children's' series that would hold up to the level of examination that we've put Harry Potter through. The reason that the flaws seem so apparent to us is because Harry Potter has gotten so much attention. I'm no longer one of those fans that idolizes the Wizarding World. I will freely admit that there are issues. For example, what was up with House Elves? Still, the fact remains that millions of people's lives were touched by a simple fantasy series for kids. So, yes, Harry Potter is a good series. Not a perfect one, but a darn good one. TL;DR: I say yes.
  4. Aln smiled a bit at the unexpected compliment. "I'm glad you understand. Gathering these books has been my life's work." She glanced at the volume he held. Dysian Aimians Around the Cosmere. Interesting. "That book you've got there was one of the hardest to find. The Aimians are a closely guarded secret. If I may ask, what are you researching about them?" Aln knew that she could only talk for so long - she had just promised the unfortunate amnesiac a room, after all - but she couldn't let this man leave without finding out what he knew about the Sleepless. His name was almost certainly a coincidence, but he had shown up looking for information on Aimia at the same time if the appearance of a familiar cremling. There could very well be a connection.
  5. Aln looked up as he approached, and hesitated apologetically. "Well, normally I restrict borrowing books to members of the Guild. We've had some go missing in the past, unfortunately. But you're welcome to stay here and read for as long as you like."
  6. Aln glanced at him. "Do you also need a place to stay?" Storms, I really should have invested in rooms for the Guild. I didn't expect the need to arise so quickly. I only know of one boardinghouse, and, well, I'm not particularly keen on heading over there just now. @mathiau
  7. Aln nodded, glancing at Folorian as he responded. She suddenly realized how exhausted she was. When she considered everything that had happened in just one day, well, it almost felt like months. "I have a room upstairs," she said, looking back at the amnesiac. "It's not much, but there's a shower and a couch that you're welcome to. I'll see about finding you some clean clothes, if you like." @Invocation @mathiau @The_Archivist
  8. Aln frowned. She didn't know what to do. Can you recover memories after suffering from post-traumatic amnesia? I've never run across this particular issue before. Stormlight seemed to do something, though. Perhaps reforging his Nahel bond could fill in some of the blanks. She was grasping at straws and she knew it. The idea was better than nothing, though. "Maybe I can help you figure out who you are," she said, as gently as she could. "In the meantime, you're welcome to stay here. I want to help in any way I can."
  9. He wants to know about Aimia? Of course he does. Aln shook her head, feeling surreal. She opened her mouth to direct him to a suitable tome, but Folorian spoke first. "No, that's fine," she said. "It's-" But she was cut off again when, suddenly, Zerameth lunged forward and grabbed John by the shoulders. Aln took an involuntary step backwards as he laughed crazily and tottered back to his seat. "Excuse me a moment," she said to the other two, then followed him. She paused, unsure of how to begin a conversation, then spoke cautiously. "What is it that you're looking for?" @Invocation @mathiau @The_Archivist
  10. Aln shook the proffered hand and attempted a smile. "That's why I have them. Are you looking for anything in particular?" John is a common name on several planets, she reminded herself. Don't overthink it.
  11. Aln looked up as another person stepped through the door, and began conversing with Folorian. She took a deep breath, trying to suppress the panic she felt over the still-missing cremling. Now was the time for her to be a guild leader, not to have an emotional breakdown. "Hello," she said, stepping up to the newcomer, who had begun perusing a shelf. "My name's Alanis Sheneth, although I commonly go by Aln. Welcome to the Scholar's Guild." @The_Archivist @Arcc1002
  12. I can read a book with one hand while peeling a hard-boiled egg with the other. Does that count?
  13. Aln blinked at him, automatically running through the planets of the Cosmere in her head. Frogstar B? Why have I never heard of this place? She put this from her mind, though, as Zaphoid announced the disappearance of the cremling. "That bug," she said as calmly as she could manage, "is a part of a very powerful and mentally unstable Sleepless named John Redleaf. He was a high-ranked member of the Bureau of Villainy. I doubt that a lectern would dissuade him for long." She picked up the lectern and carefully moved it back to its corner, eyes scanning the ground for the insect. "I'm Aln, by the way," she added over her shoulder, remembering her manners. "Alanis Sheneth, leader of this guild."
  14. Aln looked around, feeling slightly dazed. Her lectern lay on the ground, having narrowly missed her foot, and the Sleepless was no where to be seen. Instead, she was surrounded by people, one unfamiliar, all of whom were talking at once. The overlapping words filled her vision, and she had to take several steps backwards and a deep breath before speaking. "Excuse me," she directed shakily at Zaphoid, "but who are you? Did anyone see what happened to that portion of a Sleepless?" @Spaceferring @mathiau @Ark1002 @Invocation
  15. @Spaceferring @Ark1002
  16. Aln backed up hastily, kicking out at it. "Get out of my life!" she directed angrily at the bug, not noticing the entrance of the newcomer. "Why are you here?!"
  17. Aln recoiled, a familiar flash of terror shooting through her, but she took a deep breath of Stormlight, and tried to brush the bug away. She must have cut quite a ridiculous figure; Stormlight streaming from her skin, she frantically shook her leg, clutching a tiny approximation of a knife in one hand.
  18. King Alderbon had stood silently throughout the duel, watching the fight carefully with hard blue eyes. Rhode was talented, enough so to justify Alderbon's presence, although his spren still burned with indignation at being referred to as anyone's "second". It did not take long for Rhode's rapier to find the mark, sending a line of red blood streaming down his opponent's face. Quickly, the man began to bluster, accusing Rhode of cheating. "No law has been broken," Alderbon stated calmly. "This duel is over." The man's second looked as if he was about to protest, and suddenly Alderbon's Shardblade was in his hand. "If you dispute this judgement, I am willing to resolve it through combat. Otherwise, this man is the victor." He gestured at Rhode. Although Alderbon's expression was calm, danger burned in his eyes.
  19. King Alderbon acknowledged Rhode's bow with a nod, and accepted the weapons. He examined them expertly, testing the balance and feeling the edges of the blade. Then he tossed the weapons back to their owners. "I declare these rapiers evenly matched," he said.
