  1. Aln stared at the tiny sphere of precious metal. Atium was incredibly rare, and many thought that it had all been destroyed during the Catacendre. A few months ago the ACE had discovered a cache beneath the city, so it was perhaps not as rare as it had once been, but it was still remarkable to find a bead in the hands of a random teenager. And hemalurgy... it was never a good sign when whispers of spikes began to appear. Most of the tales were nonsense, of course, stories of shadowy monsters and grand conspiracies, but even one hemalurgist was a serious threat. She'd never experimented with spikes herself, of course, and she hadn't heard of anyone successfully creating an atium spike, but she was familiar with the theories. It would be interesting to directly study the metal, though. Perhaps the girl could be persuaded to temporarily part with it. "Well," said Aln, "I'm glad you don't plan to stab anyone with it. Where exactly did you find this?" @turtle @SingingMosaic
  2. "Well, it's refreshing to learn that it's not," replied Acacia. "I just got here last week. It's better than the Hushlands, at least."
  3. No scholarly talent? That was unusual for those seeking to join this particular guild. It was refreshing, though, to see someone actually taking steps to educate themselves. Aln squinted at the metal when the girl pulled it out, but the light was too dim to make out which type it was. Presumably it was Allomantic, judging by the shape. "What metal is that?"
  4. "Unfortunately this library has a distinct lack of ice," said Aln. "What scholarship experience do you have?"
  5. "Well, I always like to get to know new guild members, but aside from that there's no official screening process. I wouldn't want to turn away anyone who's honestly looking to learn."
  6. "Thirteen? That's quite young. Well, I've never put an age barrier on joining the Guild. I always welcome someone that's looking to learn." Aln gestured to the paper she had given Everest. "Sign there, and you're in. We have rooms in the back that you're welcome to use, and you're free to peruse any of these books. If you have questions, come to me."
  7. "Of course," said Aln, handing her a form as well. "Could you tell me about yourself, please?"
  8. "It seems like you'll fit in around here," Aln said, smiling to banish her lingering unease. "Once you're all signed up as a Guild member, you can come by whenever you like. We even have some rooms in the building behind this one; you're welcome to stay there. Could you sign your name here, please?" As she said this, she pulled a form from her pocket and handed it to him. The form read: I, the undersigned, hereby pledge myself to the Guild of Scholars, and promise to strive to gather and spread knowledge throughout the Alleyverse and corresponding worlds. Signed, ______________
  9. "No, that should about do it. We may have to change the wording slightly; will that be a problem?"
  10. Now that he had stepped further into the room, Aln could make out the second figure's appearance in the faint light. He was very short; Aln wasn't used to looking down on anyone older than 13. Otherwise, he seemed human, compact and wiry. Something about him still made her feel faintly uneasy, though. She pushed aside such feelings and replied to his inquiry. "I have some books about various happenings on the surrounding worlds, if you're interested. I also have old Alleyverse newspapers that go back for a few years. As for joining, we're always happy to welcome more people. I'm a bit too busy to give a full interview, but tell me some things about you and I'll fetch a form to sign."
  11. "I can't say whether I'm the right person or not, but I can certainly take your article," Acacia replied, vaulting over a chair to reach the front desk. "As for money..." Acacia paused, presented with two dilemmas. The first was that the woman who had hired her hadn't specified the price of advertisements. The second was that Acacia had no idea what the standard currency was in this place. Well, making things up was one of her specialties. "$784.32 in exact change, please," she said smoothly. "We also accept bits of bark shaped like celebrities, if you prefer."
  12. Aln began to formulate a list of questions to ask this unusual Epic, but before she could begin asking them, a light flashed on her wrist. It was her fabrial, alerting her that the door to the guild had just bee opened. It flashed a second time a moment later. Aln stood, torn, and looked at Dr. Gears. "Could you find out everything you can about how Deadspot came to be a statue buried in an Alley? Some people just came in." @Invocation @Gears She pushed through the door into the main library, and saw two figures, one standing in the middle of the room and the other peering through the doorway. "Hello," she called, trying to disguise her weariness. "Welcome to the Scholar's Guild. How may I help you? @SingingMosaic @turtle
  13. The room fell into darkness as the last of the Stormlight was expended, and she stumbled back, drained. She could make out a figure rising from the table, but the details of their appearance were obscured in darkness. Aln forced herself to her feet and retrieved an electric lantern from a drawer. Flicking it on revealed a tall, wiry woman, with the same bright blue eyes that had unnerved her when on the statue. Did she just say something? If she had, Aln had missed it. "Right," she said vaguely, hoping that the response was appropriate. It was hard to think through her sudden exhaustion. "Um, do you have a name?" @Invocation @Gears
  14. Yes. Many people consider rolling a nat 20 in D&D to be an automatic success, which can lead to a lot of hijinks that the Dungeon Master wasn't prepared for. Gets The Game - and loses it. Inserts an ancient blue dragon
  15. Gets an exasperated DM Inserts a 20 page backstory
  16. Gets a broken sword Inserts a natural 1
  17. Gets the destroyed corpses of some evil Inserts a D&D campaign
  18. Through the glow of the stormlight, Aln saw the fingers of the statue beginning to move. It's working, she thought, exhilarated. Or perhaps that was merely the effect of the energy streaming through her. This was the most stormlight she had ever handled at one time, and the effect was nearly overwhelming. Nevertheless, she redoubled her efforts, focusing on healing even faster. @Invocation @Gears
  19. Great Expectations. I loved that book when I read it the summer before, but the analysis we had to do was so inane. Plus, I had to listen to my classmates complain about it for months. If you had to remove one class from a standard high school school curriculum, which would it be and why?
  20. Meaning In the cosmos, our choices are insignificant. It's fortunate, then, that we don't see our lives from the universe's perspective. What you do with your time makes a difference to you - that's what matters. Our time is short, so we must choose to give ourselves purpose. Endings define our lives.
  21. Aln began to strip the aluminum coating from the rest of the statue. Her mind was still riddled with doubts. Pel had told her to help people. That's what she was doing, right? She was helping the Epic who had turned to stone. And yet, it still felt as if she was selling out. Like she was allowing people to be hurt for the sake of a bit of information. Well, she thought, so be it. Seeking knowledge is my job. She circled the room, removing any charged spheres from the lamps on the wall. By the time she had finished, the only light in the building was cupped in her hands. She placed the spheres on the table, beside the statue, and rested her hands on the cold stone of the Epic's arm. An inhale drew the Stormlight into her body, and she felt the storm claim her veins, raging and pulsing. She channeled that energy outward, letting the light stream from her to the statue, until every last bit was drained. @Gears
  22. Aln nodded. That made sense, and the deal itself seemed fair. But it had been so vague about whether it would hurt anyone. If she freed it from the statue, and it went on to cause damage, would she be to blame? Was the knowledge to be acquired from the Epic worth the risk? She sighed, turning the matter over in her mind. I'm a Truthwatcher. But what does that mean? Certainly not that I know the answers. Finally, she nodded again, this time to herself, and spoke. "I will help you to the best of my abilities. In exchange, you will tell me what you know, to the best of your abilities. Do we have a deal?" @Invocation
  23. An unknown language. One from the Earths, she was sure. Was it Latin? She had heard of Latin in her studies, and the word forms seemed to fit, but she had never bothered to learn it. She had enough on her plate studying the most common current languages without bothering with dead ones. Aln stepped over to a bookshelf and ran her fingers along the spines, searching. Didn't she have a Latin dictionary? She thought she had picked one up - but no. She'd never been to Earth. She must have been remembering something else. Instead, she turned to Dr. Gears. "Do you understand that?" @Gears
