Completing Kazan’s List
not an Evil Librarian replied to Archer's topic in Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
The problem with this post and Kaz's list in general is that tall people are objectively superior to short people.- 33 replies

why is aluminum resistant to investiture?
not an Evil Librarian replied to Kalaksbreath's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't think that aluminum simply "resists" investiture, but actively negates it. -
Lift: Takes handfuls of bread during the sacrament, intentional sings the song wrong during the primary program, and runs around the chapel until someone stops her. Her primary teachers have no idea what to do with her. Lopen: Not a member, but goes to all the youth activities because he thinks they're fun. Rock: The bestest primary teacher ever! Always wins the ward chili-cook-off. Elohkar: President of his quorum despite the fact that he has no leadership skills whatsoever. Wayne: He only sometimes comes to church, and only in erratic unpredictable patterns. Sometimes he will bear a great testimony, and other times he will simply belch into the microphone or something like that. No one can decide if he is faithful or not, and nobody knows what to think of him.

The density will make the bolt heavier, thus giving it better penetration power. Of course, this will also limit the range, but with a shard crossbow, I can see it being effective.

When it comes to archery, I think that a shard arrow would be much more effective. The only problem is that I can't think of a way for the fletchings to form out of metal.

That does not mean that the visual arts have no place in scholarship as Jasnah seems to believe. most of Shallan's drawings are very scholarly in nature. yes it is true that you can draw a graph without the ability to draw well, but what about a diagram of human anatomy? That would most certainly require a background in the visual arts. Remember, during Roshar's current time period, camera's are not a thing, so the only way to record what something such as a newly discovered spren, archeological artifact, or new fabrial looks like is with a drawing. In other words, the visual arts should be a necessary part of nearly all aspects of scholarship. True, but Jasnah seems to consider the visual arts to be a useless frivolity more than simply an aspect of scholarship that she has little experience with.
-
This is a problem I have had ever since my first read of The Way of Kings. Jasnah is an extremely rational person who has an extensive understanding of the scholarly field. Yet she seems to irrationally dismiss the visual arts as trivial foolishness. Now, I'm no scholar, but there seems to me that the visual arts are far more useful than Jasnah gives them credit for. just off the top of my head, the visual arts can be used for cartography, biological and anatomical diagramming, and visually representing recent discoveries such as artifacts found in archeological digs and new types of spren. So why does Jasnah view the visual arts as though they have no place in scholarship? she encourages Shallan to continue practicing her art, but merely as a way of attracting a man. I honestly don't understand how such a logical person who has such a great understanding of scholarship would view the visual arts in such an irrational way.

not just conscious beings. Objects as well. At least objects that are perceived by conscious beings, not necessarily all objects. -

The luck doesn't work all the time. at the midpoint of the story, have the main character rely on her luck to solve a problem, and have her fail utterly. Perhaps this trait could be tied in with a character arch. for the first half of the story, she could rely on her luck to solve problems. at the midpoint, her luck fails her when it matters most. So for the rest of the story, she is trying to solve problems without taking any chances. during the third act, she could be put in a situation where she must rely on her luck once more. She could go from a character who always trusts the roll of the dice since, more often than not, the odds come up in her favor, to a character who is terrified of relying on luck. In the end, she must come to terms with the fact that sometimes she must rely on chance. Just a thought (Edit) one of the most common and effective ways to take bad writing and making it work is to tie it in with the themes of the story. Shrek and One Punch Man are good examples of this. In Shrek, the protagonist is an oger who has lived a simple and lonely life and is suddenly forced out of it and into the world of fairy tale knights and princesses. so while crude humor is usually a big no-no in writing, it works for Shrek because of the crude humor ties into the story thematically. One Punch Man is about an overpowered superhero who can defeat any enemy, no matter how powerful with just one punch. while overpowered protagonists are usually bad writing, the show is great because it is more about the protagonist's inner conflict. the main character is bored with life because he does not have any challenges or obstacles that he can't easily solve with a single punch.

Intriguing Question I Had
not an Evil Librarian replied to not an Evil Librarian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Very interesting, but removing a small amount with an aluminum bowl I imagine would be different than filling the entire pool with aluminum. I don't think it works that way. An aluminum spike will remove powers and burning it makes all other metal reserves vanish. Aluminum doesn't seem to just resist investiture, but to actively negate it. Another question: Could aluminum be transported to the cognitive realm via a perpendicularity? -
What would happen if you were to fill a shardpool with aluminum?

The Bands are so powerful because of nicrosil compounding.
