  1. "Not being sad." This is why Michael is one of my favorite humans. Granite raised his eyebrows. He was proud that his mother had managed to hurt "one of the most powerful beings" to exist. More proud that he supposed he had any right to be, actually. And he was also... oddly happy that his mother was sad. Perhaps she did care after all. Trying to get back here.... That was hope. "So..." Granite said. "She's a good person, then."
  2. "Attack Silence?" Granite smirked. "Is she the reason why he's hurt right now? Also... what quest?"
  3. Sophie’s nice. Good to know. “Does that mean you oppose my mom then?”
  4. Must mean I’m important then, Granite thought. Good. “What are you doing up here, then? Does Sophie work with you guys?”
  5. Granite raised an eyebrow. “How did you know about me then? I guess I assumed... Since you’re up here with Sophie... And... Yeah.”
  6. Granite nodded. This intrigued him even more than the Narrators did. If there was one thing Granite couldn’t resist, it was power. He had thought being a Mistborn was great, but knowing his heritage had so much more to offer? He felt like he was being ripped off. “So,” he asked. “Does Star work with Silence too?”
  7. Granite smiled. "So, uh... You work for Silence, huh? Who's that?" Sophie furrowed her brow in sadness. She really wished Xinoehp would look up so she could see his handsome hazel eyes again. And she wished he would go back to being his usually-cheery self. She sighed. Did she really expect any less? He'd just been dead a few minutes ago. That had to do something to your view of life.
  8. Granite shrugged helplessly. "I mean, put yourself in my place, this... this is... a lot." Sophie nodded. She knelt down and put her hand on Xinoehp's knee, smiling up at him. "You're gonna be okay," she said. She managed to say it with quite the sincerity, something that was evident in the contrast between her quiet tones now and her excited chatter from before.
  9. "So... I'm guessing the 'Author' chooses who's a Narrator and who's a character? That doesn't sound like a cult to you?" Sophie's face fell further. She cocked her head and smiled at him kindly. "Hey," she said. "I'm really happy to see you again. I missed you a lot."
  10. Granite smiled mischievously. He'd have to find some of that. "So... my mom is a Narrator. But I'm not? How does that work?" Sophie raised her eyebrows. "You're quiet. You're not usually very quiet."
  11. "What's Narrativium?" Sophie looked at Xino with concern. "Hey, are you okay, Xinoehp?"
  12. "Okay, so... You're from a family of... Narrators." "Mmm hmm." "And you can... say things and make it happen in real life." "Yup." "But you also have things happen to you." "Yepper-do!" "So... how does Star fit into all of this? She... started the story?" "Yeah! When Marsh died, she became a villain." "A villain.... Huh. Wait, I need to know this. Did Marsh really kill himself?" "Uh huh." "Why?" "He'd been dragged through a lot. He took this potion that made him evil and then afterwards he felt awful, but then he was captured and Shadow tortured him and when Star came back he just popped out his linchpin and-" "He was tortured? Why?" Sophie shrugged. "Shadow was just bored, I guess." "Who the storms is Shadow?" "Oh, you don't have to worry about her. She had a Sliver of Ruin inside of her, but Star got that out of her so she's nice now. Kinda grumpy, but nice. Anyway, Star was all evil for a long time, but then Pheonix helped her -" "Pheonix?" "Yeah, he's Xinoehp's brother!" "Wait, so there are multiple... Narrator families?" "Yeah." "Do you guys have... parents, then?" "Uh... kinda. We have Authors." "Authors?" "Yeah. A person who Narrates us." Granite shook his head, then sat down on the chair Sophie had Narrated for him. "Sophie?" "What?" "Is this a cult?" "No, it's real! I've met my Author, TVG. She's really nice." "TVG? What does that stand for?" "The Violet Goddess." "Okay..." He looked around at Michael and Xinoehp. "You... you guys can back this up, right? Are you Narrators too?"
  13. "Silence? Woah, woah woah, can you just... slow down? In fact, lets just start with this, who are all of you guys?" "Oh, okay!" Sophie said emphatically. "So I'm Star's youngest sister... Wait, is Ember youn- GUYS EMBER IS YOUNGER THAN ME OH MY AUTHOR!!!!" She squealed with delight. "Uuuuh... Ember?" "Oh, right, sorry. Okay, Star has two sisters, me and Ember. Ember's with Star though so she doesn't matter right now. That's Michael-" she pointed to him as she said this "-and he's a mime, he works for Silence. Silence... He's... He's a big powerful... guy. We don't need to go over that. Um... Oh! And this is Xinoehp!" She ran over to him and jumped up and down beside him. "He's the best." "O...kay? And how does Star..." "Xino and Star are like really good friends. But it's kinda complicated with the universe split, 'cause this isn't Star's Xino, ya know?" "I'm just more confused now." "Okay, well... I should explain the universes thing, shouldn't I?" "Yes! Please do." "Right. So Star was... erased from existence a while back. But then she was able to come back. And then Silence decided to rip the universes in half. One with Star and one without." "Sophie... Erased from existence? How... exactly...?" "Some other Narrators did it 'cause they didn't like plot." "Plot?" "This. What's happening right now. So, like, in the other universe, the one with Star, there's a lot of plot. But here, they like randomness. We here, all of us, we are part of the plot. The story." "The story that you are... Narrating?" "No, no, no. We're Narrators, but.... we're part of our own story, too. A separate one. About us." "Where the Narrators are like... the characters?" "Yeah! You're gettin' it!" "Okay... And I'm assuming Star... started that story? 'Cause they erased her because of the plot?" "Yeah! Yeah, so they erased her, but then Ember brought her back." "Your sister." "Yeah!" Sophie grinned. "Your such a fast learner, isn't he a fast learner, Michael?"
  14. Granite shrugged hopelessly. "You expect me to know?" "He wasn't really part of the story yet when that happened," Sophie said. "That might play a part in it."
  15. "Umm... Okay?" Granite furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. "Wait, hold on, other universe? What in the..." He shook his head. "You know what, I just... I need some time to... process... this..." "Oh, oh!" Sophie said. She jumped up and down and raised her hand. "I can explain, I can explain! You're a character, right? So by learning about Narrators you should be breaking the fourth wall. BUT 'cause your mom is a Narrator, your brain doesn't explode when we tell you all of this stuff!" Granite regarded her with more confusion. "What?" "Cool, right?" "Wait hold on, a character? Is that like code for something?" Sophie shrugged. "Not really, it's pretty straight forward. Here, see, I'm a Narrator. Watch this." A chair appeared for Granite to sit in, she Narrated. Granite's eyes boggled. "What the..." "IT'S AWESOME!!"
  16. Granite's eye widened hopefully. Maybe his mother would have come back if she was able to. Maybe she cared. Or maybe she didn't. But there was still hope. He nodded. "Wh-where is she right now?"
  17. "Narrativium? What... I..." Granite scoffed, frustrated. "Just tell me why she didn't come back after.... what happened. If nothing else, that's what I most want to know."
  18. Granite bit his lip. "Yeah, I've heard that term, I just wanna know..." He sighed. "I wanna know everything. What is a Narrator anyway, what really happened to Marsh, why did my mom leave us, where is she right now, did she ever really... care. In the first place..." His shoulders fell as he looked at Michael. He looked back at Sophie, then glanced at the other man. "Who are you guys anyway?"
  19. Granite blinked. Storms, where to begin? "What... What is she? Why did she leave?"
  20. Narrator Charcoal sighed and gave up helping the kids. He and his drawings disappeared to another realm. A place made entirely of charcoal drawings.
  21. "Hey," said Narrator Charcoal. He raised his eyebrows warningly. "Behave." Then he went back to drawing.
  22. I actually think this is gonna be a new character... Smiling at their reactions, the Narrator twirled their pencil in their hand. They began sketching again, adding other characters. The drawing of Xino pulled a sword from a scabbard and a doodle of Heather uncapped a bottle of wine.
  23. The Narrator sighed and got out a pencil and began drawing in the air. With quick motions the figure sketched out Star and Pheonix and, once the drawing was complete, the pencil marks came to life. Star and Pheonix leaned into each other, kissing. The figure sighed wistfully.
