  1. No, Jahora, Rose thought to herself. I'm not worth coming back for. She knew that was true. It would be better if she just died here. So, why, then, did she feel such gratitude?
  2. She could see him. Feel him. Some odd combination of the two. If she could have moved, she would have gotten up and left her spot, made it so he couldn't find her. But since she couldn't, she just waited. Terrified.
  3. "Yeah, no kidding," Heather muttered. She glanced back down the hall in the direction Star had gone. Her spikes throbbed. Ember was left extremely confused. "I do not understand love," she said bitterly. Her face was screwed up in intense thought. When Heather saw the Destroyer's expression, she couldn't resist a shy chuckle. "What's luxite?" Sophie asked. She rested her chin on her hands, prepared to listen intently.

      Tesh

I frequently will just eat a can of pineapple.
Once I accidentally opened the can of crushed pineapple.
It was just mushed pineapple and I did not appreciate it.

  5. "I'm sure you could find any number of stories on Witherlore if you look into it. 'Geists actually make their way into lots of literature; if you have an eye to notice it, you'll see them alluded to rather often." @The Ward's Guard
  6. "For a story-hungry historian like me? Absolutely."
  7. "Well," Maverick began. "Legend has it that centuries - no, millennia - ago, a dark creature of chaos called the Witherlord was imprisoned. He longs to be released and causes calamities to happen with his servants the withergeists. The story has been around for quite a while, so it's been changed bit by bit, but historians believe that it does have its roots in some forgotten truth."
  8. Mav chuckled. "It's essentially a spin on a classic fairytale. One of my favorite fairytales as a kid."
  9. "Geists in the Shadows," said Mav. "Has to do with the the legend of the Witherlord. Ever heard about that?"
  10. "Yes. The one I'm reading actually managed to throw me for a loop."
  11. "Well, history, for one. But reading mystery novels" - he gestured to his book - "and gardening are what I tend to do in my free time."
  12. Mav smiled back. "So, what kinds of things do you like, Highness?"
  13. "Oh, no, no. I'm sorry, Lady Eleanor, I've never been very adept at small talk."
  14. "Ah. Well, I'm sure we'll be informed of what's going on soon enough." Maverick stood awkwardly. He'd never been good at conversing.
  15. When Rose was released from her mental lock, she slumped over onto the cold ground. She was too weak to move. Though she'd certainly had visions before, none she'd had in the past had left her so drained; she could hardly do more than blink and tremble weakly, silent tears rolling down her face.
  16. "I-I suppose," he said, swallowing nervously. "You don't happen to know what's going on with the lockdown, do you?"
  17. Maverick flinched slightly, startled. "Oh, hello there." He put away his book. "Something I can do for you?"
  18. Nicolae grabbed an unopened bottle of wine on his way to an empty table. The moment he sat down, he popped the cork and took a swig, his long legs sprawled out awkwardly under the table. I ain't no womanizer, miss, he thought to himself. I ain't noble neither in any sense, but... He sighed and took another long draught. Had he really hoped that she might be different? Had he really had the audacity to believe that somebody - and a high ranking noblewoman at that - might actually see him for what he was instead of... Well. This was what he deserved, though, wasn't it? He was a greedy coward. Maybe being considered a mindless skirt-chaser was actually better than them knowing the truth. With a glare, Nicolae made up his mind; whoever that girl was who'd come asking for him would be sent away. Assuming, that is, he wasn't too drunk to remember.
  19. He let out a dejected sigh. "I... I have to go, miss..." With that, he walked away, his previous cheeriness gone.
  20. Nicolae's face fell. "It's not 'cause of that girl, is it? The one lookin' for me? I don't want 'cha thinkin' I'm...." He sighed, running a hand through his hair, cheeks red.
  21. "Well, why else'd I be talkin' to ya, miss?"
  22. Nicolae raised his eyebrows, slightly caught off guard by the blunt response. "Well, yer new and shy. Gots tuh be havin' someb'dy to look out for ya?" He scratched his head. "An' you're pretty, but I don't suppose I have to be tellin' ya that."
  23. Nicolae beamed. "Well, it's me job to be helpin' out the royals, it is. But I'm thinkin' even if it weren't I'd still a-talked with ya, miss." He winked.
  24. Nicolae shook his head. "Why does I have to be the one to be bringin' constant bad news to ya? I'mma sorry, miss. It probably ain't as bad as I made it out to be. Nob'dy wants to get to their new home an' get nuttin' but bad news. You'll be just fine, miss. And if not, you just tells yer ol' Nicolae, got that, miss?"
  25. Nicolae's face fell slightly. "Ah... There's a reason the ol' Raveness' so well known, miss. They'll lock ya up for right anythin'! I could be supposin' to understand, what with all the king's bein' killed off. Gots to show yer strength in a position like that one. But at the same time... Well. That kinda fear can make people want to be killin' our king." He sighed. "All that to say, miss, I wouldna step one toe outta line if yous can be managin' that. You don't a-seem like the kinda lady who'd be eager to be doin' that though. Not one curl outta place, miss."
