  1. Darrin's gag had been removed by the guards in the room, allowing him to declare, "His fashion sense was deplorable, sir, I had to do something about it."
  2. Shouting emanated from the room beside him and Darrin rolled his eyes. Oh, joy, he thought. This outta be good.
  3. "You don't have to be so rough, it's not like I killed anybody," came Darrin's muffled reply.
  4. Darrin made a reply, but it was unintelligible beneath the gag.
  5. “If you don’t know the Raveness,” said Darrin, “then you’ve either been living under a rock or veeeery far from this place. She’s-“ He cut off as he was gagged. A muffled “Okay then,” sounded.
  6. Darrin sighed. This was not supposed to have happened. If he'd only waited just a few hours, he could have done the job just fine. But no, of course it hadn't happened that way. Hopefully Maverick wouldn't be around to boast that he was right about Darrin's ego being the death of him. He allowed the soldiers to bind him. He wasn't giving up, of course, he just knew full well that he couldn't reasonably fight off all of these men and survive. In his profession, life expectancy wasn't very high anyway, so one could only hope to go out with as much dignity as possible. Being tortured by the Raveness herself would be a much more respectable death than getting slaughtered by these lackeys. Part of him was genuinely excited to see how long he could last against the woman who was so fearsome that her real identity was hidden, to protect her from getting attacked. A soldier picked up Darrin's bow and he cringed. "Oh, please do be careful with that," he said. "I had to pay a pretty penny for that, it would be a shame if it were to be damaged."
  7. "Smack-talking the Raveness?" Darrin tsked. "I'm sure she'd love to hear about this. I'll be sure to mention it to her while I'm roasting over coals."
  8. "Is that because you're so ugly or because she's more practiced in the art of torture?" asked Darrin. He pulled his quiver off his back, setting it down politely. "I hear she's quite the sight to behold - a demon in spirit but an angel in body - and her prowess is the stuff of legends. It's quite the honor to fall under her knife."
  9. Darrin got an impish gleam in his eyes. "If you say so." With that, he threw this dagger at Caden's foot. Hard enough that it might seem threatening, but not close enough to actually hit him.
  10. Darrin swallowed and paled. And all for your lack of patience. You're going to be handed over to the Raveness tonight, aren't you, Darrin? "Well, then," he said. "It appears I have been caught." He bowed. "My congratulations."
  11. Darrin's face fell. Oh, joy, he thought. He had... no idea how to get out of this.
  12. Darrin grinned, a bit of blood rolling down his chin from where he'd been punched earlier. "Oh, I never surrender."
  13. Both blows landed and Darrin fell to his knees. Really should have practiced had to hand more. "Well, it's kind of my job to hurt people," said Darrin. Then he reached out and grabbed Jasper's ankles.
  14. "If I said yes, there's no guarantee I'd actually hold to that promise," said Darrin. "So what doesn't it even matter?" He swung for another punch.
  15. Darrin was dazed for a moment, then kicked up hard into Jasper's stomach.
  16. "She's probably as good as dead," Rian added. Arvis didn't have anything to say to that, despite how badly he wanted to say optimistic. "I'm sorry, Wendy."
  17. "The woman doesn't have a soul," Igor said sadly. "She don't follow normal human morality." Darrin moved to grab his opponent's neck, whipping out a dagger. "You think I would have entered without an escape?" He chuckled.
  18. "She did say she'd never tortured a child before," Arvis said hopefully. "Oh, don't give the girl hope," said Igor. "If you ask me, she sounded excited at the prospect of being able to do so."
  19. "Well... if it helps, the Raveness insisted that she shouldn't go to the dungeons. If I didn't know better, I'd think that she thought it wasn't right for a child to be locked up in here, but who knows. She's a demon, she is."
  20. Arvis. "I'm sorry about your friend, miss, but... there's nothing you can do." "It's a rare soul who hasn't lost someone to the Lady Raven," said Igor.
  21. "If we knew how to get out of here," said Rian, "do you think we'd still be here?"
  22. “She got taken by the General. I don’t know what’s happened to her, but I know they plan to question her. And the Raveness.... Well, Stars only know what that woman plans to do to her. I’m sorry.”
