Lift will be a POV? Omg, I hope she doesn't change too much - I just love her "Do you have a weapon?" - "Nope - Can't read..." "Your name is Lift right?" "Right" "And your order?" - "more food!"
-
Rather that than Shallan + Adolin - it just doesn't work for me - they are boring and annoying together at the same time and it's the "prince gets the girl again no matter what" trope... which makes me roll my eyes all over again Whoever Shallan ends up with in the end I really hope it's not Adolin, probably not going to be very popular with this but meh - I too like them both - just not together, and considering how things ended - the door for "everything is still possible" is at least widely open

O_o The old elhokar - maybe - but he went through some serious changes for the better and really tried to do good for his people, for his family and his well let's say friends - he wasn't oblivious to the truth anymore that he needs people he can trust if he fails (during their mission to get the oathgate working I think to remember that he always said 'when I fail' not 'if' so I guess he already expected to not survive) and still he went to do the right thing. Moash did sign his own death I guess - kaladin won't protect him anymore because after all he did it's definitely not right anymore. My guess is that Sanderson is setting him up to die sooner than later - killing a herald for good can't help to keep the oathpact intact as weakened as it is now and as soon as he brags about it which I'm sure he will at some point plus considering he killed the king right in front of kal he'll get executed by someone. Probably Szeth :/

Why the 4th WR Ideal cannot be about sacrificing some to save many
Void89 replied to Ripheus23's topic in Stormlight Archive
Way too many big words here, please consider people who don't have english as their first language and 2 - 3 degrees... As for the topic, I think it is possible that it has something to do with letting people die to save more - let's say 2 cities are attacked - you can only be in one place at a time so you have to make a choice and basically sacrifice one bunch because you go and save the other ones leaving the rest to die - you can't save everybody. Not saying though that you have to actively kill some little group to save many - that would be twisted -
She's probably the only one though who can help him with the 4th ideal - I still think it has something to do with accepting that you can't save everyone and have to let them go or even sacrifice some to protect the majority. And only somebody who doesn't gives a damnation about what society thinks is moral, somebody who makes him understand in a clinical straightforward way that you cant be everybody's saviour, like jasnah, could do that I guess. Still - not really convinced they'll get all hot and naughty together, good solid friendship - sure, more..? Probably not
-
She's about 10 years or so older though, even if i could imagine that kaladin might be drawn to her because she is attractive (men are wired that way sorry but that's the way it is) - I can't really imagine jasnah to see him as anything different than maybe a little brother. She just doesn't seem like a person who would be drawn to somebody that much younger - as her mother said - she was born 35 years old and it took just some time until her body cought up Although I agree that we probably get at least some interesting conversations
-
Just throwing that out there, when exactly do you know that you are in love, it would be totally hypocritical to say that you know you're in love after a few conversations - which kaladin and shallan had - to say after that you're in love... well they never really had the chance to develop such a feeling - though the potential is definitely there... And adolin... well - considering that shallan is the first woman who manages to keep his attention for more than 2 days... obviously he's interested but love really? I wouldn't be so sure about that - yeah he cares and she does obviously too - but things will get messy I guess. Too many secrets, too many problems too many unresolved issues... Love is a big word to use here and I'm not sure that's what it is ;p Also for all the 'adolin sees her people' out there - he's not. Not really. Just one example that is somewhat of a keyscene: Shallan clearly feeling shaken here and he's still pressing on - delusional to her feelings: Her heart was beating quickly, her skin growing cold her muscles tense. She was fighting the sensation... 'I mean the bridgeboy can have one, and he is darkeyed. Anyway it's not so different than that.' 'Thank you', she thought, 'for ranking every woman equally to peasants' but she held her tounge, this was obviously an important moment for him. He was trying to be broadminded, but thinking of what she'd done pained her - holding the weapon would be worse. So much worse, she wanted to hide but she couldn't. This truth refused to budge from her mind. 'You're right, but -' 'Great, great....' And thus Shallans 3rd persona was created, not to mention that he never even realized it during their training although she was acting completely weird... He does not 'see her' - he spent a lot of time with her and if you do that you realize sooner or later that something is wrong... On the other hand kaladin at the palace scene had way better intuition on what she needed. Sorry but I just love to discuss things

Awesome, thanks - saw that page earlier but must have missed it - just skimmed everything for a possible date

Kaladin, all the way. There is no doubt about it. I think he's the most 'real' character in the series so far. He gets betrayed almost every step of the way by almost everybody he considered important and still isn't giving up. People treat him like trash and he doesn't give a damnation - sure he's grumpy but who wouldn't in his position. Also he has Syl - and she is the most wonderful spren there is (in every way - I literally laughed out loud at some dialogues with her). Which gives his character another solid headstart before anybody else. Second place is I guess Shallan because well, I wouldn't say I like her, but her character is relatable - the stuff she went through is tough and still she tries to do good for her family and for the people she cares about. Lift would be the 3rd I guess, she's just funny as hell. Easy as that Everybody else is like - well how can I say it - 1st world problems - adolin is a rich kid who is somewhat likeable but his biggest problems were women (before he met shallan) and anger management issues. He isn't a bad guy not at all but feels somewhat bland. Dalinar is interesting with his superspren but not really interesting enough to make the list - he basically was a giant idiot before his wife died and now he's trying to make up for it. Renarin could get interesting in future books - potential is definitely there but as in right now he just seems weird. And then there is Wit... well I guess he isn't really a radiant nor a potential one but definitely curious about him - who is he really - whats his part in all of the cosmere - where is he going all the time. Whats his deal, can't wait to find out.

Does anybody know when approximately skyward 2 will hit the shelves? This one really got me by surprise. Absolutely not my genre - sci-fi fantasy hybrid? Seemed weird, but he made it work so now I'm hooked and need more of that stuff
-
Well, whatever happens happens. Regardless of what we'll discuss here it won't change the story he will be writing. I for one just wanted to put it out there that the whole thing just seems way too rushed and is very unlikely to be the end of it. If I'm right you'll see me telling you in about... uhm... 2 years "told you so" if not - I'll have to live with it. But as it stands now it would really really bother me - I said earlier because of how it was done but that's not entirely true - I guess the very idea of the resolve is ok - not what I would do but that's not the point. It just happened way too fast way too rushed for being a good resolve, pushed into the last few pages - felt like "ok let's get this over with" if you get what I'm saying. If he'd done that in the next book shallan "slowly" deciding that she wants adolin (everything would be slower than what we got) - ok fine all good - but here she basically blinks 2 times and "ok it's done - all good adolin it is". Also the note on how the book ends, we get that rushed ending and then it's over - right after the battle of the millennium - looks more like an endorphine rush than anything else to me. But well, we'll see what happens next looking forward to the next books One thing is sure though, if I ever have to read something along the lines of "I can't be not ok with somebody as sweet as jam at my side" I'll probably read the rest of the books on kindle instead of hardcover - easier to wipe away fluids that should stay in your stomach.
-
At first totally - I liked them both, and they had chemistry. Now, well I'm not sure. The thing is that shallan is lying to everybody, most of all to herself. And that is far from over - she's trying to not make it worse, but she isn't healing either. That's far from healthy and far from anything Kaladin needs - they just would be miserable together. At least for now. Also Adolin isn't really the best choice - you are a broken piece of crap with 300 secrets, not sure who you are, not completely sane, lying to yourself about your health.. and then you just make the very small decision to get married to the next best person even if you can't really be sure if that is really what you want? This just can't end well. I did not find the ending unsatisfying because I liked shaladin, but because of how it was resolved it was basically 25 chapters of "oh I'm about to swoon she/he is so special/beautiful whatever" - and then we get a few pages with - "full stop - let's get married, forget everything that happened before we just make up some half good excuses and everybody will eat it" - that's not Sanderson. He writes good stories, and he would never make a mistake like that. So far, journey before destination
-
Don't know - I feel like there is more to come. The ending of oathbringer was very weak and felt cheap. And Sanderson is a brilliant author who usually doesn't take the easy way out. At least not like that. There are several issues unresolved and Sanderson just ends the whole Adolin, Shallan, Kaladin stuff with "yeah he's good for me I guess I'll marry him" and "yeah she's just somebody I needed at this very moment - nothing more" uhm... yeah... sure... because why not... If this was any other author who doesn't have 300 clues hidden in plain sight and 400 Easter eggs in 150 words I'd probably go with it and tell myself - well screw it - obviously he didn't really had a plan where this was going and is trying to end it before it gets out of hand... But Sanderson, really...? Come on... not like that - definitely not like that. I don't really care who kaladin ends up with because I trust the author that he will come up with something good, regardless if we like it or not - it will be good. And the end of OB with that triangle resolve was easy not good - so it can't be the end - easy as that
