  1. well, technically that's how you achieve apparent FTL in theory in our modern world. The speed of light changes based on various conditions (like gravity), and when it changes so to does your "max" speed, so in theory if you could sufficiently warp space-time to change the speed of light (significantly, that is), you could technically achieve "FTL" travel. This is actually perfectly "acceptable" under einstein's laws. Example: Say the speed of light = 1, and you can easily get up 50% the speed of light. Lets say you also can warp space time to make your light speed = 3. In the first scenario, you end up going .5, but when you warp space time, you end up going 1.5, which is faster than the standard light speed, but is still not technically faster than light, since light in your local area is still going faster. That said, if the bubble is actually messing with how much kinetic energy something has, then that kinda implies that its accelerating/decelerating it... also: yeah, kinda off topic, but its still fun to discuss
  2. Are you talking about that quote? I don't know, that doesn't seem to be saying "Yes, these magic systems defy physics" so much as "Remember the normal world rules except for the ones the powers are letting you 'ignore' for game purposes". I just honestly need convincing with good reasons for it before i'll accept one situation seemingly following physics and the slightly reversed version apparently horribly breaks it. Granted, if peter says that it works that way, then I'll just live it edit: also, thinking about it a bit more, i don't see this letting you achieve FTL travel, either. Even if it allows you to break physics, accelerating *TO* the speed of light requires *INFINITE* energy, so even assuming you could finagle it to give you infinite energy, you still couldnt go FASTER than light, since you could never have more than INFINITY energy
  3. i dont't know....that idea doesnt sit quite right with me.... At first glance (at a sleepy 2:30 in the morning), this idea appears to break conservation of energy, and usually brandon's works appear to jive pretty nicely with physics, and this wouldn't (unless its burning off matter to add this new energy....which would be bad....VERY bad....). "Losing" energy is a whole lot easier than gaining energy, for example, the loss from the bullet entering and slowing gives off an audible "pop", so it effectively just burned off its extra energy as sound waves (which are energy). Just because the effects are equally opposite doesn't necessarily mean the manner in which they are achieved have to be perfectly mirrored as well. The only way i could see the speed bubble GRANTING it energy is if it took it from the speed bubble itself (outside of burning matter that is) which could effectively "burn" off your bubble. Also, sir-read-a-lot is right that in einstein's model of physics, no matter how much you accelerate you can never reach, let alone surpass, the speed of light via acceleration, you can only get infinitesimally closer, which would be another way that speed bubbles would break physics, which would be incredibly strange that
  4. well, i've never done any modifications of forums software (for either IPB or SMF) so i can't speak for how it works, all my programming experience is scripting and application programming, so anything I say in regards to web programming is based on limited experience, but the way I see it, so long as any modifications to the main code base is nothing more than references to outside, modular code to get it up and running, it shouldn't be a huge issue.
  5. ive been listening to these in audiobook slowly (over the past year or so) in anticipation of the final book, and I totally agree that going back, i notice SO much foreshadowing of things to come. I'm up to The Path of Daggers, and totally not looking forward to the whole "kidnapped Faile" thing...
  6. My only concern with adding the custom title system here is that it was likely part of the reason why TWG wasn't kept up to date (because of all the custom code), and therefore got hacked into. Though i could see it being possible to keep it all entirely self contained, so that upgrades aren't too much of an issue, but its certainly something to keep in mind when we consider custom coded bits to add in.
  7. well, I think that depends on the manner of how the DDoS was executed. If, for example, the person wrote up and distributed a virus and enslaved a giant botnet, and used that botnet in a DDOS, then yeah, I would say it counts. If it was from a script kiddie who downloaded a little program that attempts to SYN flood a server and spoofs the originating address, then probably not so much Edit: though, obviously, i'm going to lean towards the latter than the former, since most random attacks are just from someone who thinks they're awesome because they downloaded some little "hacker" program
  8. Yeah, unfortunately users are allowed to make their own titles here. I loved the old "level and get a crazy title" system back on TWG Off topic: Good to see you here, monsta!!
  9. well, without looking at the code, its all ready parsing through all the information, including if its an up or down vote, so the variable is likely there and loaded, so it should be as simple as adding an: if vote != downvote then displayname() end if (that's pseudo code, of course). However, this is all conjecture in the first place, and without looking at the code i cant guarantee this All im trying to say is that it doesnt sound terribly hard just from knowing how it currently works. That said, if it is a much more difficult task, then I wouldn't worry about it. Its one of those features that would be nice, but not mandatory, especially since many of the times people specifically call out when they upvote you anyways (something like "awesome! upvotes for you!" or something like that)
  10. What's a little thing like academic failure when compared to taking suggestions from a stranger on the internet? Clearly we know who has your best interests in mind here.
  11. You should go with fire. It's all-natural, renewable, cheap, and outrageously effective.
  12. yeah, you actually have to add the RSS feed link, not just 17thshard.com (this is true of any website). Usually you see an RSS button () or something, just copy and paste that link into google reader and that should get you what you want.
  13. Yeah, it was on sale since like noon-ish (ended a little over an hour ago) yesterday. I totally picked it up too. I loves me some steam sales.
  14. heh, so now i'm imaging allomancers somehow burning shardplate..... Swallowing a bracer or two is definitely not going to be fun (because good luck breaking up the shardplate and "grinding" it down) In regards to this theory, I like the idea of it, however, I don't think it's possible. Sure, allomancers may be able to burn atium because it has power inherent to it and not because its an allomantic metal, but remember that people from Scadrial were created through a combined effort of ruin and preservation, so this may have something to do with it.
  15. Yeah, hemalurgy as written lets you add allomantic/Feruchemical powers to your power list, but I didn't see any racial limits to it. I didn't notice anything off hand that i can remember that would FORBID it. From a rules-lawyery perspective, it doesn't add an ALLOMANTIC or FERUCHEMICAL power but a HEMALURGIC power that mimics one from the other lists from what i remember. Edit: looking up in advancements really quick, it specifically says page 126: another edit: and this appears to be further enforced in the hemalurgy section. Page 286: It talks about koloss and kandra in regards to hemalurgy, and it doesn't appear to state anywhere that a kandra can't get hemalurgic spikes (just that they CAN get more blessings), where as everything about gaining hemalurgic powers says that ANYONE can gain them.
  16. yup edit: though there is debate if taim is darkfriend or not, which i don't think has been resolved in any capacity yet further edit: and here's the FAQ on the subject.
  17. i wouldnt mind know WHO upvoted me (but i agree that downvotes should be hidden, lest downvoting incur bad blood between some people), but I wouldn't want to be NOTIFIED of every upvote
  18. Honestly, i see no harm in discussing it so long as its discussed in an adult manner. If it devolves to arguments, flamewars, and non-PC hate speech it will be closed as appropriate. I think that the community here is mature enough to hold discussions on this particular topic. As it stands, ive been watching the topic really closely just in case it devolves into something more base to moderate as needed (probably also why i have so many posts in it) As far as the rep points go, that's kinda what they're there for. If someone says something you dont like, you down vote them, it's certainly within their rights to up/down vote whatever they want (and not something we're going to enforce any "rules" upon for what can and can't be up/down voted). Down voting someone for expressing their opinion on the subject at hand is kinda, IMO, bad form simply because you disagree with them, but it doesn't make what they have to say "bad", unless the opinion is basically outright hurtful/derogatory, but that's sort of "the risk" you run when posting ANYTHING opinionated on the internet. Well, you're certainly allowed to disagree, but what do you disagree with specifically? That Aran'gar having relations with women is of a homosexual nature? Or the more general thing i said earlier that woman+woman = homosexual? I'm not going to try to dissuade you, i'm just curious what you disagree with and why (saying "i disagree" gives me little to go on, afterall )
  19. Yeah, but it's honestly more of a semi-interactive story, really. Like I said, I may do a few things with it, we'll see. For now, though, it's on the shelf while i cool off from a loooooong weekend. yeah, it was the forever alone face
  20. with....?
  21. heh, thanks. The concept kinda just came together as i was making it. Last year in my last ludum dare, i tried to set up a maze generation algorithm, but it didn't work quite right, so I ended up scrapping the idea. This year, I decided I was going to make it work. I'm very very far from a musician. My music creation skills are....lacking. And yeah, I considered putting in a "run" button (actually, i should have just sped up movement, probably). And yeah, I'm aware of the bug that starts outside of the maze, but I was running a bit short on time, so I had to leave it in the name of being done on time. I'm pretty sure it's happening because i'm offsetting the positioning of the maze based on the hero starting position, i'm essentially "moving" the maze around the hero (to keep the hero centered) and I think that there's a small bug that causes you to be outside of the maze initially when it calculates the maze starting position, what seems like maybe 1/5th of the time. I didn't really think it was sequel worthy, but I am overall happy with how it turned out. I may fiddle with it some more in the future to iron out some kinks and add a few new features to it (there were a few things I ended up cutting due to time constraints). I thought it fit pretty well into the "alone" theme of this one. There's also an "easter egg" of sorts on every single "movie" sequence. A buddy of mine apparently noticed it right off the bat. Also, i'm actually really happy with the way all the art turned out. It's not awesome, but given my limited graphical abilities, i thought they turned out pretty well. I was afraid it was going to look really crap and impede the story (what little there is of one) a bit...
  22. well, the ludum dare site isn't exactly the best, and around competitions it can usually get pretty slow, so it could just be the site.
  23. Ludum Dare 22 entry knocked out an hour early. Now to relax! http://t.co/8hPRseYv #LD48

  24. I just submitted my entry for ludum dare #48 For those who don't know, Ludum dare is a game making competition where you have 48 hours to make a game from beginning to end, solo. The theme for this one was "Alone". I made a relatively simple maze-type game with a small twist, you can "swap" the maze lay-out at will. I made everything from the sound to graphics to the code, all from scratch using C#, XNA 4.0, photoshop and fruity loops. I probably could have used some sort of game maker software to make things faster, but by the same token, I enjoy the challenge of making things from the ground up (i didn't even use any personal libraries of code to speed things up). Unfortunately, I forgot about the competition and started about 14 hours late, so i wasn't quite able to implement everything I wanted to. And yes, in case you're wondering, this was basically every waking minute of my weekend.
