My number one is Allomantic pewter and Feruchemical gold for some light compounding. You only need one good piece of gold (or a bunch of little pieces), but don't need to swallow and burn them, and can simply store the excess healing from the Pewter instead of getting sick. Another great one would be Tin/Tin. A person can burn tin all day, as it is a slow burning metal. Just shunt all the sensation into a five different rings, bracelets, whatever, and go about your day like normal. Then start compounding like crazy until you have an unlimited amount of extra senses, which you can then individually turn on and off at will. Imagine being able to turn your hearing down when things get too loud, and then back up again when you're trying to hear someone just out of earshot. And lastly, Bendalloy/Bendalloy. We know how awesome speeding up time is, but imagine the compounding. You never have to eat again. One meal, and then you start compounding until you never need to eat again. Same with drinking. But you like eating you say? Just shunt the extra calories into a Bendalloy metalmind. Never go above your calorie goals for the day, stay fit forever and eat whatever you want. Or, never eat again. Actually, an unkeyed Bendalloy/Bendalloy Medallion could end world hunger, if you could find enough of it. Humankind could go from needing food to needing Bendalloy to survive, due to compounding.

Yes. Because that disputes my point in some way. It doesn't matter who he gave the Laresium to, he only gave it to 12 people.

Just finished Elantris, Need to Re-Read it?
Tglassy replied to Habanero's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
After Elantris, I'd recommend reading Mistborn, all six of them. Then Warbreaker. Then Stormlight. Arcanum Unbounded should be read after the second Stormlight book, but before the third. The reason for this is because Edgedancer is a Novella that is rather important, and is basically Stormlight 2.5. However, Secret History is also in there, and it's a Mistborn short story, and should be read AFTER all six Mistborn books. The other stories in there can technically be read at any time. I really need to get a copy of White Sand. -
The way Brandon answers those questions about TLR's children makes me think that many of the Metalborn we meet in the books are actually descended from him. If you think about it, he made what, 12 Mistborn from his friends? 9? I can't remember. But there are a lot of them around, and it wouldn't be inconcievable that he had his own bloodlines through the ages. If you are a Misting or Mistborn, and you got your power from one of 13 people in the ancient past, and the families have been interbreeding for a thousand years because they're not allowed to breed with any of the rest of the population...well, it stands to reason that many, many people have Rashek as an ancestor, even if he stopped having kids 500 years ago.

In reality, as narcissistic as Kelsior is, his actual focus is on protecting those who can't protect themselves. He's the Scadrial equivalent of a Windrunner. He's Kaladin, he just learned how to smile instead of brood. He's just completely ok with killing people to do it. While he did take down a government, he didn't do it because he hates governments. He did it because the government was corrupt and abusive. Kel is very noble, in his way. I think he would be trying to help people who can't help themselves, in any way he could.

If that's the case, and merely touching the Investiture in the Nicrosil medallion is enough to be able to use the power and the investiture itself is not drained, then the price of medallions goes up, and Ferings and Mistings, while still important to make the medallions, do not get a steady inflow of cash if they had to constantly recharge their abilities. Nicrosil Ferings sell to Mistings and Ferings, which allows them to be in business selling their own powers. Still, I like the thought of being able to switch powers in and out, without having to kill people. It eliminates the whole "What power would you choose" thing that I get so wrapped up in (Allomantic pewter/Feruchemical gold twin born is what I'd settled on). This makes it so anyone can compound, as well. Get yourself a Steel/Steel medallion, and you're flying through the city, running at breakneck speeds, superhero style. A Gold/Gold Medallion would probably cost a freaking fortune. Well, all compounding would, but I'd imagine Gold/Gold would be top dog, or at least close.

I'm seeing Era 3 as being a time when people can literally buy Metalborn Powers. Like, they have arm straps that can hold a number of Medallions, and they buy them and switch them out as needed. All they would need is access to a full Feruchemist for Feruchemical powers, or access to the Bands of Mourning for everything. Allomantic powers could be obtained by creating an unkeyed Nicrosil/Aluminum Medallion, allowing one to store their own Investiture/Identity in another Medallion. It would be a great source of cash for any Metalborn, be they Misting, Ferring or otherwise. Like, I'm a normal person but my wife likes to keep the house too hot. So I save up a bunch of money and buy a Medallion that grants Brass Feruchemy, so now I can regulate my body temperature. Underwater workers can be requisitioned a Cadmium Medallion instead of needing Scuba gear. Swat Teams can be granted Pewter/Tin as well as Steel or any other power, resources permitting. I'd assume the Medallions have to be recharged by their respective Ferings/Mistings, as they work by draining one of Identity, then pouring one's Investiture into a Nicrosil ring, which is then unkeyed allows anyone to tap it, thus granting that Investiture to anyone who taps it, but wouldn't that investiture slowly drain? They should be able to tap it faster, strengthening their power for a short time, but it would eventually wear out and they'd need a new source of Investiture. That said, if they DID find a Mistborn and gave him a medallion , they could create a single Nicrosil Medallion that held the Investiture of a full Mistborn. One Medallion That would be hella expensive, I think. So, every Metalborn would want a Nicrosil/Aluminum Medallion, allowing them to store their own Investiture for sale. I can see it now. Metal born Dealers. "Hold on guys, I can't got soaring with you tonight. My Steel is low. I gotta see my Steel Pusher tomorrow for a recharge." Aluminum and Nicrosil Ferings become the economy's most important producers. Since storing Investiture should store every power you have, a Twinborn could make a mint, and a Compounder would be super wealthy, as they could make one Medallion with two powers. Yes, there are Medallions that can have up to 3, but this would be one ring in the Medallion giving two powers. Cheaper to make, as it only takes one Donor. And then of course the implications of taking this off world. Giving an Unkeye Nicrosil medallion to a Surgebinder, thus granting someone the ability to use Stormlight. This could give Hemalurgy a run for its money in the Power Transfer department. It would also completely change modern society. Of course, it is all dependent on a few people spending most of their time filing their investiture into these medallions. That would literally be their job. But they have to use an Investiture Medallion to be able to drain their Identity into Aluminum, and then have another one (or a ring in the same one) to drain their Investiture into another Medallion, which means a Aluminum Ferings and Nicrosil Ferings literally are the linchpin of society. Even the Bands of Mourning only has so much investiture in it. Eventually, that Investiture goes by by, and that spearhead is just a chunk of different metals all stuck together, as we don't have a Fullborn to fill it again. That begs for Hemlurgy. Kill a Nicrosil Fering and an Aluminum Fering with Spikes, give them to someone else, when they die, give them to the next person, etc. Yeah, some power is lost, but it never is completely lost. Even if you only have a little, it would just have diminishing returns up to a certain point. That would keep society going, at least. Yikes. Maybe it wouldn't be all that good to be an Aluminum or Nicrosil Fering.

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Tglassy replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted, but there are no Surgebinders, and the frequent Highstorms cause such massive destruction to all the major cities of the world that civilization as we know it ends, most land animals and plants die (as they are not equipped to deal with such a devastating storm), and within a few months, all that survives is small pockets of people and nature that happen to be protected from the storm naturally. Congratulations for bringing about the end of the world. I wish to never need sleep without suffering the drawbacks of not sleeping. -
My theory on Shards is that they each have an internal/external pushing/pulling dichotomy going on. I believe that Autonomy is the internal pushing version of Honor, who would be internal pulling. Honor binds himself, Autonomy breaks his own binds. If my theory is correct, then External Shards have their focus on things external from themselves, and internal shards have their focus on themselves. Ruin and Preservation were External powers, they affected others, but their intents didn't include themselves (ruin didn't want to die, and Preservation died to preserve the world). Same with Odium. He's an external Shard. His focus is on the outside, as he doesn't hate himself. He wants to force his power onto the world. But Honor DID bind himself to his own intent, and he gave power to those who did the same, willingly. I think Autonomy would be the same, giving power to those who's intent matched his own, but not actually doing the unbinding himself. That could be where the Avatars come from, individuals who are basically "slivers of Autonomy", who try very hard to break their binds against whatever is trying to hold them down. They could have enough power to be considered Ascended, like The Lord Ruler was with Preservation for a short time. Which would be why "whole pantheons" are actually just Autonomy, as each person in the pantheon is simply another Avatar of Autonomy, using the same power. I suppose Trell could be an Avatar of Autonomy, but then why would they just decide to up and destroy the world because technology got to far advanced? I suppose if each Avatar had its own will, then that could be the case, but what threat does Scadrial have on them? Personally, I still think Trell is Odium. We know there's a Form of Power that allows a Singer to appear to be someone else, and Forms of Power have Red Eyes. The Set is run by Singers, or at least have some that serve them, and Odium is trying to find a way to destroy Harmony. Odium fed off of Paalm's hatred of Harmony, granting her a spike or spikes that would allow her to go undetected by Harmony. We know Odium likes to destroy planets, and we know he likes to dominate planets. Unless it's a cooperative attack with an Odium/Autonomy combined effort, which would makes sense.

Well, if the feruchemy alters the body to withstand the changes, like Iron does, then I don't see why it couldn't alter the brain to withstand more heat. I suppose it would be determined by how much heat is needed to counter the colder weather. A normal person was able to use the heat to make the freezing temps of the Temple feel like 70 degrees. But even a Southern Scadrian was able to do that, and to them, those same Freezing felt more like subzero. How much extra heat would the body need to produce to make one feel like subzero temperatures felt like 70 degrees?

Kelsier, Dalinar, Raoden, Vasher, and probably a few others all wind up with Shards. Dalinar winds up the new Honor (or Unity, or whatever), Kelsier winds up as the "survivor" shard, Raoden winds up collecting both Dominion and Devotion, and Vasher winds up collecting a shard that makes sure he stays crotchety and old.

I don't think Syl GAVE him the stormlight, I think she allowed him to draw it in from his pouch. He was breaking his oaths, and had been cut off from her. His forcing her to let him draw it in caused her pain, similar to how when Dalinar forces the Stormfather to do things he doesn't want to, it causes pain.

I believe that the people's perceptions of reality color the Cognitive Realm. On Scadrial, the Mist is pervasive, and colors everyone's perceptions. It's an exquisitely important aspect of their lives, and shapes their perceptions on the world. Therefore, in the Cognitive realm, everything is very misty. On Roshar, glass Spheres are currency, and provide light. They're everywhere. The concept of a glass sphere holding something valuable is a firm concept to the Rosharan mind. Therefore, the cognitive realm shapes itself so that every thing is a glass sphere.

Why Oathbringer is so Important [Sibling Theory]
Tglassy replied to ILuvHats's topic in Stormlight Archive
It would be interesting to know what would happen to the Stormfather if Dalinar broke his oath..Would he die? Would the Storms stop? Or would the HIghstorms rage but no longer grant Stormlight? -
It was a tiny tree...

I'm wondering if those hints about intelligence aren't more simple than that. The Shard Intellect. That would go with Odium, which is basically Passion, or emotion. It would actually, sort of be his opposite. One is pure logical thought, the other pure emotional outrage. In fact, it seems that many of the Shards have an opposite. Preservation is obviously the opposite of Ruin. Honor's opposite would likely be Autonomy. Honor bounds, Autonomy loosens. Devotion is the opposite of Dominion. Devotion is about giving everything to someone else, Dominion is about taking everything from someone else. Cultivation, the word, is not just about growth, but directed, purposeful growth. It's about work. Cultivation is Work. So Cultivation's opposite could be Rest. I know Cultivation seems related to Ruin and Preservation, but I don't think they're in the same grouping. Ruin doesn't care about life, growth or anything, if the universe was already dead, and just decaying, he would be happy. Same with Preservation. If the universe was frozen in time, he'd be happy. Cultivation is about the physical world, specifically. Life, in general. Endowment could be the opposite of Ambition, in that Endowment is about enhancing others, while Ambition is about enhancing one's self. Well, after writing that, I'm noticing a pattern. There are 16 shards. There are also 16 metals. Metals are classified as Internal/External, and Pushing/Pulling. And then they are Physical, Mental, Enhancing and Temporal. Already, I'm seeing similarities. Ruin and Preservation are Temporal, one makes things stop and the other makes things go. So I'd classify them both as External, as they affect what's around them, not themselves. Ruin, after all, did not want to die, but Preservation was willing to die to preserve others. Ambition, Devotion, Dominion and Endowment are Enhancement, merely the focus of the enhancement changes. I don't know where to put Honor, Autonomy, Odium and intellect. Honor is Pulling, and Autonomy is Pushing, and I'm pretty sure Odium would be Pushing, and Intellect would be Pulling, but I get stuck on the Internal/External axis. I feel that Honor would be internal pulling, because Honor DOES impose his own ideals on himself, unlike Preservation, who doesn't. But, honor does bind other things as well, though that could just be a side effect of his Investiture. I'm going to say Honor is Internal Pulling. Same with Autonomy as Internal Pushing, breaking one's own binds. This is even seen in the Investitures, Honor sucking in Stormlight, and White Sand using their internal water. One pulls, the other pushes, though it could be argued, then, that Honor is External pulling. Still, I feel it's an internal shard. One is binding themselves with oaths, not binding others (except for a few surges). But whether they are Mental or Physical is another question. As for Odium and Intellect, they seem internal, but I'm actually thinking they're external. Odium pushes, definitely, but he pushes others. He wants to push everyone else. And Intellect takes in information from the outside universe. So while they are Mental, I think they are External. And if Honor and Autonomy are also Mental, then we have that four down as well. So the only ones we wouldn't know are the Internal Temporal Shards, the External pulling Mental Shard, and the other three Physical Shards. If you look at the chart below, it makes sense. I may not have every shard exactly right, some were harder to place than others, but these groupings make sense. Once more are released, this chart may have to be rearranged a bit, but I'm wondering if Brandon wound up grouping his Shards the same way he did his Metals. Temporal Shards Preservation - Keep others the same - External Pulling Temporal Shards Ruin - Allow others to decay - External Pushing Temporal Shards Mental Shards Odium - Feel passionately about everything - External Pushing Mental Shards Unknown (Intellect?) - Understand universe - External Pulling Mental Shards Honor - Binds self - Internal Pulling Mental Shard Autonomy - Loosens self - Internal Pushing Mental Shard Enhancement Shards Ambition - Enhance Self - Internal pulling Enhancement Shard Devotion - Give of self - Internal Pushing Enhancement Shard Dominion - Take from Others - External Pulling Enhancement Shard Endowment - Enhance Others - External Pushing Enhancement Shard Physical Shards Cultivation - To make grow? - External Pushing Physical Shard?

The Honorblades don't have sentients, and they are considered Shardblades. Personally, I'm of the opinion that a Metalmind sword may as well be a Shardblade. Yeah, it won't cut through anything, but you could fight a Shardblade with one. And if you could make the sword be like the Bands of Mourning, which is not out of the picture, then you essentially make a person a full Allomancer/Feruchemis, with a sword that can parry Shardblades, and enough potential power to be able to push metal MOLECULES. Quite frankly, I may actually rather have that than be bonded with a Spren. All the power of The Lord Ruler just by holding this knife? Yes please!

If that were the case, then Hemalurgic Spikes would be of Preservation, not Ruin, and Ruin wouldn’t be able to take control of them.

Oh my goodness, I hate you so much right now. Granted, you are now Cultivation, but Odium will shatter you and there's nothing you can do about it. I wish that I would finish writing my book series and that it would sell millions of copies for each book. -
I think Dominion and Devotion's Investiture is too jacked up to separate at this point, isn't it? It's locked in the Cognitive Realm, basically an ongoing supernova. I'd figure they were to intermingled to be separated. However, Sazed took up both Preservation and Ruin. Why couldn't someone else find a way to take up both Devotion and Dominion?
