Which power would you choose?
Dysphoric Kitten replied to Straff Venture's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Let's define immediately. If this is not the definition all of you who argued with me used, this debate had been a great misunderstanding and, most probably, a waste of time. Immediately means no buying or otherwise obtaining any items with the purpose or using the Feruchemically, only using items you already have. -

But the only relevant pieces to this argument are the ones you already have. Doc said that you have all that to work with from the start, which I deny. I claim you don't have many usable metals on you by default, and will need to acquire them. After you did, however, I completely agree that you have wonderful powers and that they are very usable. But only after you acquired them. I love Feruchemy, and do not deny it's usefulness, nor any of it's other qualities, just the claim that it is useful out-of-the-box. This seems just wrong to me. -

What I said is that making metals is easy enough that pure base metals have become obsolete in almost all cases, which means that they are not readily available and just lying around, but rather, you will need to obtain them. Obtaining them is fairly easy, but must be done. King of Nowhere, please correct me about this, but are pure Zinc, Tin, Iron, Chromium and Cadmium widely used in everyday objects? As for alloys, is every possible alloy named Brass, Bronze, Pewter, Duralumin, Electrum, Nicrosil or Bendalloy (yes, that last one exists) present in everyday objects? (now, please note - I did not even mention the fact that those objects are supposed to be on your person at all times) -

In FE, Sanderson says the 1% carbon content in steel makes it completely different. It is no longer iron, much less pure iron. I would assume the same rules apply all over the table, and gold would be under that rule. So, if a 99% iron is not pure iron, a 99% gold is not pure gold. Still, regardless of whether if this is possible, I am going to presume your wedding band cost less than 1,000$, and is not 24K, because most people don't go there. In the very unlikely event of having a pure 24K gold (actually, you need to be finer that 99%gold, if you agree with the ligic above), congrats! You now have enough gold to heal eight small wounds and a broken bone, enough not to die when you have been shot, or something similar, at the cost of several days' health (Sazed "day off, soup, bed" style). The point is not basemetal purity, it is immediate availability of those pure basemetals, which is very close to zero. As for non-base metals (I listed the problematic ones in a previous post), you have to make so many combinations to dicover both the materials and the exact percentage, that it will cost huge amounts of research and work. Now, this all is not to detract from Feruchemy, which is the best ever, but the theory of it's availability, which I believe is wrong. I still think Feruchemy is sweetest, which is why I developed a psychological equivalent. -

Rome used high grade elecrum. That means 22K or so. 24K gold could be worked by hand at room temperature (20°C), which means a wedding band would be warm enough to get scratched to nothingness. Look at Wikipedia. It will tell you gold is malleable. It will also tell you that gold coinage does not use pure gold, and Sanderson will tell you base metals must be pure to work. -

The steel will not be pure, and therefore is very likely to either not work or work worse than intended. The black iron is not pure, and will not work, as it is some kind of alloy. Your wedding band is not pure gold, but an alloy of gold, sterling silver and copper, most likely, so it is not even electrum (gold and silver). Pure gold, you see, would be too soft for any wedding band, as it is about as tough as playing dough. So, you only have a faulty steel watch. See? As for brass, for example, you have at least twenty combinations of materials that are called brass, not even considering allomantic purity. Plus, as brass and bronze are largely the same, allomantic brass might be catalogued as bronze on earth. Same for bronze, pewter, nicrosil, bendalloy, and duralumin (which may have been mentioned in book 2). And remember, some of these metals are very expensive. It would definitely take time. -

But none of these metals are pure. Trust me, you will be lucky to get one complete thought in there, or strength enough to lift your keyboard. So you will still need to spend money to get all that metal. Now, zinc supplements are the first thing to buy. You learn about stocks, store brainpower to the max, then tap every once in a while to make good three-second decisions about those stocks. You gain enough, and pay a smith for a Zinc ring or whatever. You continue with increased ability, then you expand to your favourite metal. Thing is, of all the all it's we only know the composition of bronze and steel. Because of that, you will need to expend huge amounts of time at a metallurgist's. Just so you all know, I have developed a way to get some of the effects of Feruchemy in real life, via psychology. -
[game] Buy or Sell?

No. Just... No. (also, I can easily define nightblood as evil) In Endless Pages, we will meet people whom Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor knew. Or from the keeps. But still. -

Sell. Nor stormlight gems or elantrian lamps. Another person from the Davar family will die in WoR. Subsale: at least one will in every book until Shallan goes on a killing spree. -

I only read the first chapter as of yet, but I seem to remember it should take years to make a soulstamp (I believe that is the name). -
Theory: Kaladin meant to to wield a Shardblade? (Spoilers)
Dysphoric Kitten replied to Punter's topic in Stormlight Archive
From what the two radiants (in the vision with the midnight essence) told Dalinar, and the fact that they said they are stationed in Alethela, which is the kingdom of war. I never heard any quote of Jasnah's that is so, so I am guessing this is from a reading, and therefore spoilers.- 42 replies

Yeah, I meant to say shardblade but did not remember how to say it at the time (memory issues, sorry). I have no ideological problem with plate, but let's remember Szeth opposes it and why he does.- 42 replies

Oh, please. This is just like saying you do not want to be an allomancer if you become a gnat, not a surgebinder if you have no stormlight, not an Elantrian if there is no dor, not a Reurned if people have no breaths, or something similar. Allomantic Aluminium and Duralumin should not be considered twinborn unless they are compounders - you only get the feruchemical abilities in these sets, which makes you no different from a ferring (except for breeding purposes, which is actually a very good reason to choose twinborn over other metallic arts - your children might be awesome, even if you aren't). Do you have an example where the twinborn is not indistinguishable from a ferring? -
Theory: Kaladin meant to to wield a Shardblade? (Spoilers)
Dysphoric Kitten replied to Punter's topic in Stormlight Archive
Not entire orders off the field. None of the KR will be off the field. Not even one. You see... K stand for Knight, so they cannot avoid fighting. However, some radiants will fight using other tools or using their powers. It probably will be unwise to have orders which do not know how o use shards, which is why I think all orders will use shards as a rule (interperting "them" as knights - until WoB proves me wrong), but Szeth says Plate interferes with lashings, and some might think like him. Well, I can think of Edgedancers, who grow things and heal (healing allies, growing beasts/obsacles/cover/somehing?) as well as manipulate fricion (moving through obstacles? stopping large threats? turning opponents to ash?), and say they are more for support (medics, engineers*) than acive fighting, and therefore will usually not use plate, but this is like saying the field doctors can operate in the open, without cover, that it does not matter if they get shot - somewhat ridiculous.- 42 replies

Really? Please tell me which type is not cool. -
Breeze is 40-50, Ham probably a bit less, Kel - no idea (I think 32 or about 40), Clubs is somewhere closer to the 70-75 zone.

Theory: Kaladin meant to to wield a Shardblade? (Spoilers)
Dysphoric Kitten replied to Punter's topic in Stormlight Archive
Good point. I still do not think Kal, the master spearman, should discard his spear, learn the sword and all that, when he is already about as dangerous as a shardbearer and can train more. I see no advantage in him being given shards, especially when Sylphrena opposes them.- 42 replies

I have a better use for brass. No time, so I will edit this later to say it.

You just described why. Chaos will ensue when a radiant is fighting a herald. Chaos is also an admin here and on MBI. His real name is Eric. -

Theory: Kaladin meant to to wield a Shardblade? (Spoilers)
Dysphoric Kitten replied to Punter's topic in Stormlight Archive
Please use the name Odium then, and not the emotion hate. When you say hate, it is completely different from a piece of Odium. So, why would pieces of Odium attach themselves to blades at all, and why just them in particular, not the plate? I like it. Seems just... fitting. Assuming the blade is actually of Honour and not Odium. Are we sure that the blades cannot harm one another? This may well be how 4.5 millennia later, we barely have any more shards.- 42 replies

[game] Buy or Sell?

Buy, but then they all worldhop into ranks, and act as cosmere moral enforcement or whatever, try to lock Hoid away and/or kill him and/or other way of getting rid of him. He kicks them to the storming mists of Scotland (yes, all the way to a different universe. no it is not impossible, it is impossible for anyone other than Hoid, seeing as he just managed to do so), then proceeds purifying awesomeness in his shadesmar-located lab. Either that or they will ask him to lead them. Hoid is ostensibly the Doctor in a super-sneaky and uber-puppetmaster version. Did any of you notice that? Shallan and Shallash will meet. Chaos ensues. [Eric turns around corner, Tal ducks in a panicked shoulder roll] Please tell us what part you just bought. -
RJ did not take anything I know of from Jewish history. Just had names similar to Hebrew words. It could have been accidental (after all, Shai'tan could be a reference to Satan, it is similar enough), and there are other explanations. The parts I reckon are stolen from Jewish history (inspired by, more likely) are actually in Elantris and Mistborn. Well, the mistborn one is fairly obscure, and therefore unlikely, and the Elantris one is so commonly and easily used as something to compare to that it should be ignored. Still, I am reminded of them.

Dysphoric Kitten replied to Punter's topic in Stormlight Archive
Okay, let's assume all the information you supplied is true. Why would blades that kill humans be suddenly filled with an emotion? Why hate? And if it is simply the emotion (and not some part of Odium), and that is why Sylphrena despises and avoids it, how come she does not avoid, despise, or whatever, Kaladin when he says "lighteyes"?- 42 replies

I need to finish reading the rest of the thread, but so far I have two things to say. (is there any evidence splinters can while shards cannot?) Maybe a splinter, being much simpler in sensory input, mental processing power, spiritual footprint, physical impact, etcetra, needs only so much of a cognitive aspect, and therefore it can develop by itself. The shard, however, is immensely more complex in all of the above aspects. Follows, the shard would need a better cognition, which might need to be built around an existing cognitive construct (either of a specific kind (many reasons why) or not) to give it a jumpstart. Think of trying to make a base drum and it's pedal (somewhat complex, can be done poorly) versus trying to make a piano (impossible without massive studying). Now that I think of it, the simpler splinters may be able to start forming, then after cognitive enough, direct the rest of the process. Shards would require something much more aware and capable to assemble. Note: I can also build a theory exactly opposed to this one and have it make sense. I have noticed some curious places where a story of Sanderson's is strangely parallel to Jewish history. I have also noticed (long ago) that some names and words RJ wrote in Wheel of Time are oddly similar to words in Hebrew. I can say (and be dismissed rightfully) that Adonalsium has this attribute (like Shai'tan (which would be spelled like Satan)). If it does, the meaning seems to be something with Lord and Finishing - it has alternate meanings.
