  1. Perhaps, but it depends how much older than Dalinar that Galivar was. Dalinar is what 50 in the WoK? Navani is most likely a bit younger than Dalinar. And from what we've seen it isnt that unusual for them to be large age gaps, but they do seem to have rules about how old someone must be before they marry. But even so if she is younger than Dalinar then for Yasnah to be 35 she would have been 15 or younger which is possible but unlikely. 30 sounds more reasonable but even that all depends on just when Galivar decided to conquer the Princedoms. As for eyes, if he becomes a KR in truth I think its a given that his eyes will be lighter than 99% of so called lighteyes and wont have any baring on it at all. Especially when it becomes obvious that the social construct behind it was that the "Honorable" should lead, not a bunch of self serving, and loathsome bunch of cretins that most Lighteyes seem to be. Either way still dont see Shallan and Kaladin being a match but not like any of us know 100% that we're right
  2. You might be right about the age gap, but Jasnah has been known to go against custom more than a few times. Trying to remember if there are any real details about her age, I think she has to be on the region of 8-12 years older than Kaladin, but whether her physical body is that age is the question. Im curious to see whether stormlight effects the longevity of the human using it, it heals wounds and such we already know that, but what we dont know is whether if increases your actual lifespan and Jasnah has been using it to an extent for a while.
  3. Didnt realise the atmospheric pressure was a confirmed one tbh. Hadnt really looked as deeply into cognitive aspects though, was mainly looking for possible scientific laws/bending of those laws to create the same effect. But I suppose in a way thats what the cognitive side does, it removes the need for those scientific laws. Hmm will be interesting to see whether Kaladin can ride the lightning then, if he can effect atmospheric pressure, if hes strong enough or if enough others aid him he should be able to create storms by messing with that pressure.
  4. It makes surprising sense the more than I think about it, especially when you think that Stormlight Infused gems happen during highstorms. Storms usually contain a lot of Ionisation(not sure if thats the correct word for it or not off the top of my head to be honest.) Gravity would work as long as it was a stronger pull than the planetary gravity, not to mention the fact that so far almost everything we've seen that type of lashing work on has already been in motion towards the intended target anyway, so its always been a more minor shift. But Magnetic attraction would make it far easier and in many ways far more discriminating than making an item a source of gravity. Not to mention taking a lot less energy. Still very curious as to how Stormlight is harvested though, is it natural light from the Roshar's Star filtered through the highstorm, or is it from Lighting? Too many questions, too few answers. Well at least for another 8-9 months.
  5. Kaladin/Jasnah has some possibilities. She I think would find a man who is as honourable as her father/uncle yet also intelligent and one who respects learning will be difficult to resist. Not really sure about Adolin and Shallan, we here too few deep thoughts from him in tWoK for me to get a good sense of his character. Im more curious to see whom will be Odium's Champion. Shallan and Szeth both have very negative connotations towards them even though both have reasons. Whereas Dalinar/Kaladin have both been portrayed as very good honourable characters. So which one of the four will go Darth Vader on us? I think Szeth is too obvious personally, though the fact that he can be used for corrupt means by whomever holds his stone makes him the most likely, but it doesnt quite sit right. Shallan has some potential but I really cant see Kaladin being Odiums Champion.. But that may mean he will be because it would be the most unexpected and possibly the most devastating to Roshar.
  6. Far better explanation than mine, thanks for the confirmation. Though im still unsure as to whether this means that the Reverse Lashing pulls the objects towards it using some other force than Gravity? And if it isnt using Gravity to pull the objects towards the item which is being RL'd then it must be some other factor involved? However if it is some other factor then why does it not work as well against objects which are directly touching the ground? Okay been thinking about it after name_here trashed what I thought was going on.(You might well have a point but a bit more tact on both our parts might have been a bit more constructive, But I was the one who snapped back I suppose) Could it be to do with the magnetic fields? Not everything is magnetic but this is Roshar, not Earth so it could be possible that a surgebinder could put a Full Lashing on an Object A and set its polarity to positive and then the force the otjects travelling towards it into being negatively charged. Objects touching the ground might therefore resist the attempt to change their polarity to a far greater extent than ones directly touching Roshars EM Field.
  7. GRAVITY DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY! In reality... This is a Novel... One that provides the basis that things outside of our understanding might be possible... You might be right, or it might well be another of those moments when there is no scientific basis and it is a mere case of "because the author said so!"
  8. Think you are almost certainly correct there. Im beginning to think that the spren are Telepathic to a large extent with those they bond with, but that it is more of a symbiotic relationship as they cannot really be "sentient" without a bonded human. All bridge crews were targetted eavily, they were designed to be so, Kaladin realises this towards the end himself that the Alethi armies which use them want them to take the brunt of the damage so that the Parshendi Archers attack them rather than real soldiers who have to be trained. As for B4 it was a punishment assignment, they needed something to make the other Bridge Crews not feel so bad, because all they have to do is think. "hey least im not with those losers, i'd be lucky to survive the week." By giving the other bridge crews someone who they can look down on it makes their own oppression seem less. From what we saw though, Bridge Four lost the same as any other Bridge on an average, before Kaladin began training them, remember that some bridges fell entirely quite frequently. The main point that marks B4 out was the fact that it got the dregs. The Parshendi seem to have very different views on honourable combat than the Alethi. Besides using Archers on the Bridge Crews doesnt really lower the combat effectiveness of the Parshendi Armies because most of the time the real armies dont approach until the bridge has been set anyway, so they still hurt the Alethi and score some HK's they just do it on people that Sadeas doesnt give 2 hoots about. Overall it wouldnt make hardly any difference if they chose not to kill the bridge crews, unless they brought in a far larger force of archers and then began mass volleys as soon as they tried to cross. Also regarding Kaladin, if they knew what he was they would not have faced him with gems, they were totally blown away by what he could do, so I really dont think they had idea about him until the Battle for the Tower
  9. Well whatever he did was instinctive anyway, whether it was a lashing or something else it cant have been a conscious ability or he would have known about it. Up until he really embraced it almost everything was instinctive, He learned to control was the Full Lashing I believe, sticking objects together. He didnt really display much regarding the Reverse Lashing until the Battle of the Tower when he pulled the entire volley of arrows into his shield and even then that was more instinctive than deliberate. Makes sense really though. Full Lashing is the least complicated as it requires less understanding except the knowledge of binding the objects together. Reverse Lashing is pulling items into an object he is touching. Basic Lashings however seem anything but basic, but that doesnt rule out that his body/mind might do them out of panic as they did with the others.
  10. I thought Reverse Lashings change an objects orientation so that they are the source of gravity rather than the ground, which is why it works better on things not already touching the ground i.e arrows/spears probably birds and bugs as well, for objects already touching the ground they would be pulled by both forces, so it would require a far stronger Reverse Lashing to compensate for natural gravities pull on it. Pressure would take a lot more mental focus though as it would need to force each individual object at it. By making the target object the focal point of Gravity, everything will be pulled towards it, but it would take far more gravitic pull to make objects bound to the ground to move to it. (Szeth pulling the stone from the wall into the door for instance, he could have pulled something else far easier but it would not have had the same effect in the battle.)
  11. No but the Radiants about to give up their shards drop from the sky after they had flown there instead of running, whether they accepted the fall easily because they had Shardplate is another matter, we know from Dalinar that it can absorb a lot of force. Im still curious about the ring of stormlight, but we know that whenever he uses a lot of it his clothes start to freeze, as for him trying to activate it and run along a wall, dont really think that means he couldnt do it by instinct without realising it. He pulled arrows into the bridge for months without realising he was doing it. Could be that the stormlight protected him from it by absorbing the force for him,. Its too hard to tell without us knowing more. We do know its possible for him to survive such a fall though because he has done, whether it is a normal application of pre-displayed abilities is another matter.
  12. I meant mass as in Netwons Laws on Mass not Mass as in Mass(weight). An example would be that of the Moon, the gravity is lower there than on Earth, on the order of 5:1 so what while their actual weight would remain the same the Newtonian Force of that weight would be substantially lower or with a 2x lashing upwards it would be 0. The lashings effect the gravity. a 1/4 lashing pulls half your body weight upwards, a 1/2 lashing gives you virtual weightlessness.(You are naturally pulled half towards the ground and half towards the sky on Roshar. So it would depend more upon just how much force he actually built up before he landed. it might well be uncomfortable or painful but it doesnt require any new Surge to do. Its no different to the lashings we see Szeth do repeatedly. Including the one where he uses his shardblade to cut a hole in the floor, and lashes the stone so it has a neutral pull towards the ground, then stands on it so that it has weight pushing it down towards the ground. Under normal circumstances this would not be a pleasant experience but because the Newtonian force is so low it does not make much noise or cause Szeth to fall about on the ground as if he had just had the floor cave in and dropped atleast a dozen feet. Szeth see's all these abilities as Windrunning and using the Lashes, so im perfectly willing to accept that its true
  13. That depends I suppose on whether you think a man hitting the ground weighing 80kg will suffer as much damage as say the same man hitting the ground at 40kg or even 0kg with a 1/2 Lashing. It depends really, Physics on Roshar is an interesting thing. The fact that you can bind your mass upwards is a very tricky thing. But more to the point. Momentum without Mass might not effect the inertia but it will definitely effect what happens when it lands If something hits you at 5mph but only weighs 0.001KG it would be very different than If something weighed 100KG, so if a surgebinder changes their basic gravitic pull they change their mass(newtons)
  14. His focus is holding his breath with stormlight. Every time he opens his mouth he releases it... Shouting would therefore release more out of his lungs. But it hardly seemed otherworldly, not to mention the fact that the soldiers around him didnt exactly react like it was something louder than it should have been. You may be right but to me it seemed more like he was actually trying to get his attention fully in the final shout, whereas before that he was worried about distracting him at a critical moment. Suppose only time will tell
  15. I thought the Voice was more about battlefield command skills rather than anything using Stormlight, because by that point he had used up most of it to avoid glowing. The surviving falls is most definately a basic lashing, Szeth can do the same when he chooses to by altering his relative weight. i.e binding himself to the sky so he falls at 1/2 his weight. Kaladin cant consciously do a lot of those things but when they matter it happens naturally out of need. I think your right on some of that, Syl does have some semblance of a physical manifestation or she wouldnt have been able to bring Kaladin those leaves so its possible that she uses similar to what you have suggested to create that splid form. The communication is the bond they form so pretty sure you are dead on that the others will eventually be able to talk silently with his or her spren in time. Not so sure that she detects them as much as feels them, she seems to be able to almost sense them emphatically which might explain why she struggled so much after/during the Battle of the Tower, she could sense the battle quite far away, not sure if that is the same thing. but I think the Fabrials essentially sense hostile emotions as well. Should be interesting as we learn more about things. Very interesting points though
  16. Pretty sure it is the Anti Art Lady. Shallash's divine attributes are Creativity and Honesty. Add in 4500 Years of self-loathing and a little madness and you might well get someone who's honesty will not permit people to raise her to such lofty heights when the Heralds know exactly what they did and why they did it. Or maybe the face just doesnt match her own or she doesnt want people creating objects with her image. Either way I think that they are immortal, for as long as Honor has even a touch of power on Roshar, they must have been seriously empowered by Honor in the first place for them to become his Champions. Also, if Shallan's father had an Honorblade, I very much doubt that he would have kept it gathering dust. Those things are a lot more powerful than a regular Shardblade, I would be more than a little surprised if they could only be used by the bloodlines/reincarnations of Heralds for many reasons, but foremost I think is because I think to use them fully most likely takes something along the lines of the words that the Radiants have to say, except to a much stronger degree. I.e The Oathpact, That in my opinion of what we have seen so far is more important than reincarnation/bloodlines.
  17. In Dalinar's Highstorm visions one of the Surgebinders in it mentions that not all Spren are as discerning as Honor-Spren, So I dont think its a case of spren evolving but something different. I think its more likely that it is merely the Symbiotic Relationship between prospective Surgebinder and Spren, The spren gains something, for Honor Spren I think it is sentience and a firmer hold on their metaphysical manafestation, Syl for example gains cognitive functions the longer and more fully she interacts with Kaladin, and shortly before Kaladin begins to fully embrace the Stormlight she creates a life sized human form larger than any Spren Kaladin had ever heard of. I think Truth-Spren must gave something different because of the relationship with Shallan, I think they feed off of the Truths given and that Binds them together, we wont find out how the Truth-Spren develop until the next book but its possible that they will become more Manafested and become a source of knowledge and help to Shallan. Could well be that the Divine Attributes effect how you handle the Stormlight and what Surgebinding you can do more than what Spren you bond. For Example: 1. Jes. Jezrien(Herald) Body Focus (Inhalation) Divine Attr: Protecting/Leading.... There is Kaladin in a nutshell I Think Shallan is one of three. Personally I think it is probably #4 due to the focus on the eyes and how her memory snapshots work. 4. Vev. Vedeledev(Herald) Body Focus (The Eyes) Divine Attr: Loving/Heaing 5. Palah. Palah(Herald) Body Focus (The Hair) Divine Attr: Learned/Giving (I Think this one is closer to Jasnah) 6. Sash. Shalash(Herald)Body Focus (The Blood) Divine Attr: Creative/Honest (Navani anyone?) With Dalinar being: 2. Nan. Nalan(Herald) Body Focus (Exhalation) Divine Attr: Just/Confident.
  18. In Kaladin's Defence from what we have seen in the books a good 80-90% of the Lighteyes are suffering from a rather large case of their heads having a holiday home in their rectum. Most of them see Darkeyes as mere servants who should be honoured to be in their presence. Elhokar has his reasons as well, can any of you imagine someone murdering your father and no one being able to stop it from happening. And then start seeing really weird stuff? damnation I'd be panicky and paranoid as well.
  19. In some ways it makes a lot of sense, in others it doesnt. Its something which will require quite a bit of thought to give it the reply it deserves, I think you might be onto something to an extent... But what if not all the Callings and Glories are of Honor? Only those which were truly linked to him would be beneficial as far as becoming a Radiant. In many respects I think it is Jasnah's Dedication rather than her Scholarly goals which would tie her most to Honor, but time will tell. However regarding the why haven't they shown up beforehand. Everything in the world changed when Galivar and Dalinar went to the Shattered Plains, something they did or didn't do effected the world in some way. From what is said in the books that is when the Highstorm Visions began in people as well as the Deathly Visions. (Dalinar was not the only one who used to receive the Highstorm based ones, we have a few quotes in the Chapter Intro's about people who received them) I think it has something to do with what is essentially a Time Capsule of Honor's last thoughts that he left in the wind waiting for the time they would be needed, and something to do with that has allowed the last remnants of his Powers on Roshar to find the fertile soil within people whom would be most receptive to his Powers and his Visions, and even then they have to accept and follow those of their own choice. Most of those Chapter quotes were from people who had died and then Taravangian had then had killed, perhaps anyone who see's those visions whether they be Highstorm or Near Death have the potential to embrace Stormlight? If that is the case then Taravangian might well be working indirectly for Odium in killing people who could one day become Champions of Honor.
  20. I thought that the reason why both Syl disliked the Blade was similar to the reasons why the Knights Radiant abandoned their blades and plate. Without the Voidbringers the shards had no function except to slaughter humans, and we know from Syl's reaction after the Battle at the Tower that being near death on that sort of scale hurts spren. The Shardblades are corrupted in the same way that their original purpose can no longer be fulfilled but instead of being used as woodcutters or masonry tools they are used to kill people. However that changes slightly if you think of them in the same way as Fabrials, if there was some sort of Spren inside the blades, then the other spren might consider it an abomination to force the trapped spren to kill mortals.
  21. They'd been basically sent to hell 100 times, they were probably partially insane long before they broke the Oathpact, and add Post-traumatic Stress Disorder to survivors guilt. They have got to be seriously messed up. They left one of their friends to be tortured for what has been the better part of five millennia. Thats a lot of guilt, not to mention living in a world where they are revered as something close to gods. They failed in a big way, they probably know Tanavast is dead and they might blame themselves for that because it is quite likely that by breaking the Oathpact they weakened Honor enough for Odium to win. I.e Honor's champions threw in the towel. Definitely agree with you that they will be nomads or the most unlikely people, because if they wanted power then they could just retake their true identities. I think they would do their utter most to forget who and what they were otherwise they would feel the shame of their actions. They were after all the shining beacons of Honor and they failed, they have seen how the world has changed for the worst and that has to effect them.
  22. I wouldnt actually be surprised at all if there ended up being 40 different magic systems and not 30. 10 Old Magic Schools with Surgebinding Schools as their parallels. opposing: 10 Voidbinding Schools with 10 XX Schools as their parallels The reason I think this is that I think Szeth is a Windrunner 'mirror' from the unnamed XX school. As I dont think it is Old Magic, he would have said, and it certainly isnt Voidbinding. And BS has said he isnt surgebinding so it makes you wonder a bit. We dont know much about Voidbinding or the Old Magics yet. But it could well be that they are both Invoked Magics, that you have to call upon and be empowered by an outside source. With Surgebinding and XX as the genetic/fate based ones that are going to happen whether you invoke it or not. I have absolutely no proof, a few speculations but that is about it. I lent out my hardcopy but my audio copy has the tables of magic in the back and it says about Surgebinding and Old Magic being contemporaries as such, and that their is speculation that there might be another group which is similar to voidbinding.
  23. Personally I would not be surprised if the boon and the curse were not deeply entwined in Dalinar's case; for instance if he were to seek the old magic in an attempt to deal with the loss of his wife. It would be ironic if the Nightwatcher decided that the Boon should be for him to cope or even be able to move on, but the curse would be for him to not remember her. The other real possibility I see is that Renarin takes after sshhh a lot more than he does Dalinar. I dont think they actually state in the book what she died from, but it could have been the same thing which Renarin suffers from but to a more advanced stage. If that were the case then the Boon might well have been for Renarin to not die from it and we all know not dying from something is not the same as a cure but Dalinar might not have phrased his Boon correctly in which case he would feel guilt towards Renarin, with the curse being the memories of his wife. Im more inclined to think that the first option where the curse and the boon are tied together is the most likely, but until we get more viewpoint scenes it will be hard to nail down the truth.
  24. Probably from After the Hiorocracy fell, because thats when the current vorinism begins as far as i know.
  25. I always thought that had a link towards uniting the shards of honor but we'll see.
