  1. Yay! This is all stuff I have been closely following and am just as excited for the new H-c book as I am for Words of Radiance. I would like comment on the short story he did I really hope the republished version feels a lot more like MTB because the short story felt quite rushed like it was moving through the motions but has tonnes of potential so I'm super excited to see what he's done with it now he's added more words Also I feel it's classification as children's literature is quite a disservice as it really is very similar in tone to LoTR. More an all ages book in my opinion. But there is dark tone to it mixed with a very whimsical atmosphere they really are a delight to read.
  2. Really I'm just curious to see if anyone has read these books, and if so what they thought of them. My first read through I thought they were quite a pleasant distraction from my worries but now rereading them I find them to be quite superb. Prose, world building and characterization are all there and very good. The plot is a bit simple in a way, but it is very much a character driven affair. I think they are some of the most interesting fantasy stories I have ever read but that is my opinion - now what is yours?
  3. Now what am I reading? Rereading mostly. Way of Kings. Foundling by D.M Cornish. Still reading paradise lost. And A Clash of Kings. which I'm enjoying but when I'm not reading it I feel no motivation to continue. Also started codex alera and the second book in the Malazan series but haven't read much of them since.
  4. I will be getting the US hard cover as I just ordered the US hard cover of the Way of kings. But if I see the Gollancz version in stores here I'll get that too as I much much prefer the cover style (not necessarily better art) to that of the American books. And it's also good to support your local stores. Edit: I will probably get the ebook too as soon as it becomes available. Also though interesting I have no desire to get the audiobook three copies is enough I think haha.
  5. The first rule of 17th shard is no one... actually that doesn't work...anyway...welcome! And enjoy your time here
  6. I do love Brandon's books but I have very little interest in reading an excerpt from a yet to be released book. There is a reason the book is released as a whole and I feel like reading excerpts takes away from this. Of course I think it is awesome that the previews are released just isn't for me. And I already know it will be awesome so I need no confirmation on that Edit: Sorry if this came across as a little strong. I am absolutely all for excerpts and previews being released it drums up hype and publicity, and gives us fans something to chew over while we wait. Just for me personally I feel it would negatively impact my reading of the book when it arrives but that is just me.
  7. I have not read the excerpts except for little bits here and there. However I am not very adverse to spoilers. The reason I have not and will not be reading the excerpts is because I want to read the book without skimming parts even if those parts are at the beginning. I want to appreciate the book as a whole from start to finish something I didn't do with A Memory of Light having read the prologue before hand when actually reading the book proper I never read the prologue again which was crucial in working the reader back into the book and because of that I experienced a strange disconnect during reading. I fear the snippets I've read have been too much as I do not want the same thing to happen with WoR.
  8. I upvoted you just so I could neutralize the downvote you had been given. But comments like these are both unhelpful and unneeded. Especially on a site such as this. The forums should be a safe place to all where they can obsess however much they like over Brandon's works. I know you probably didn't mean to be as harsh as it seems but please ask yourself next time, "Is what I'm posting adding anything to the discussion ?" and act accordingly. Thank you.
  9. Cosmere series. Of course! The tales of the Otori (a trilogy and a sequel and prequel set in a fictional Japan rather gritty YA moving closer to adults histrical fiction with magic thrown in) The Wheel of Time Monster Blood Tattoo (It's technically a YA trilogy but I would call it more all ages, think Oliver Twist but with monsters meets biopunk) I also really like what I've read of A Song of Ice and Fire so far but I can't claim it's my favourite as I'm no where near finished. I rank most of these as my favourites because of how beautifully written they are on a prose level. But each series does something dufferent for me. Im not sure they are all high fantasy but they are definitely worth a read in my humble opinion
  10. I've semi converted three people. One person I just hang out with so much that she just started reading them (I know I started with Elantris but I can't recall what she read first)and to be honest when I first read all of Brandon's then released Cosmere books we were having a race. but they were my books so I guess that counts, she has an account here too but the forums aren't really her thing. And my crazy obsession with his books sort of makes her not as into them though I know she really does enjoy them. The second person I got to read Sanderson read all of mistborn trilogy and couldn't get through AoL and is still reading WoK which is enjoying a lot more than mistborn but I think he's just too busy to finish it. Though he wanted me to read ASoIaF which I'm still plodding through halfway through the second one. The latest person I've converted (is it just me or does that sound creepy?) I started them on Elantris which she absolutely loved and has now read all of the Mistborn trilogy and is keen for more I think. So going off of that I don't know what one I would recommend first as a rule. Mistborn is good start as it's action packed and crazy cool. And Emperors Soul might be good for some as it's short but I don't think I would ever try and get someone into Sanderson using that book. it's great my favourite Sanderson book but i don't think it works as a good hook. Warbreaker is also good as it's free on the website but I know a lot of people who are adverse to reading on screens for any extended period of time so maybe not that one. For me I think I would go with Elantris just because it's Sanderson's first and I loved it enough to keep going so why shouldn't others? Of course it is a very flawed book compared to his others and in the end as a hook I think the Final Empire would work the best or if your friend has been into long convoluted fantasy series in the past WoK I guess in the end it depends on the person. Which just makes this whole post waffle but im losing feeling in my fingers so there is no way I'm not going to post this haha.
  11. Anime i really like are Welcome to the NHK FMA: brotherhood baccano Puella magi madoka magica fate:zero and others i can't remember ones i couldn't remember: Neon genesis evangelion code geass Steins gate
  12. That's awesome. I was given some cool red headphones some money another copy of way of kings as my other one is pretty tattered, itunes voucher doctor who season 7 on dvd and adventure time series 2 on dvd and a case for my third tablet killed two in one year whoops. So very good Christmas for me haha.
  13. The episode was essentially great. But the regeneration itself was overblown and underplayed at all the wrong moments. Of course there were other things I have issues with but what I really loved was how it all came together. And I have only just finished watching it too and that's when I'm at my most critical so maybe it will grow on me a bit. Goodbye Matt Smith... Gah...
  14. They distribute everywhere apart from the USA basically wherever Tor doesn't have distribution rights, however you may be able to order in personally. I live in new Zealand and we essentially don't get hardcover releases of Brandons books just big paper backs. Of course there may be other ways of getting a paperback.for example there is a book store here that exclusively sells American publications.even though we essentially only get UK editions of most books. Sorry I can't be of more help but good luck in your search
  15. Haha that is awesome. Depending on where you live I'm pretty sure tor releases a soft cover a year after the release date. If you are getting the book through gollancz they publish both hardcover and softcover at the release date.
  16. I agree completely about this. I was of the mind that maybe dead characters should be past tense but I see how that could get messy. And anyways one major reason we should go with this present tense system is that the coppermind isn't even confined to Cosmere or even in world facts so presenting it as an in world document doesn't really add up to me.
  17. Sorry about the digression guys and no hard feelings to you Alaxel. And feather I would very much like to discuss things in private chat sometime there are a lot of things I'm ignorant about myself. Once again sorry for the digression. Enjoy the dodge ball
  18. My one is the cover art for an album by as cities burn come now sleep which is one of the most rewarding albums I have ever listened to in it's emotional raw ness. Emo meets post rock super cool. But yeah the cover depicts two sleeping forms beneath sheets which reminded me of elantris and the half dead people in that book so yeah that is why I have it as my icon.
  19. Happy birthday Brandon hope that you have the best of birthdays and get to spend it with your family and friends.
  20. I reside in Tauranga New Zealand which is in the middle of the north island on the east coast. Was born in Hamilton then lived in Gisborne until I was two then moved up to the Mount which is basically in Tauranga then at around five I moved to Tauranga proper. And now I spend most of my year in Hamilton for university. I've only ever been to the south island once and have never left the country.
  21. I love how Nohadon is basically a Rosharan Emmanuel Kant. When I was introduced to that guys thinking in my first year of univesity it was the first time morals made sense to me outside of religion (though Kant does point to God somewhere in his thoughts if not his theories). So it is super awesome that Brandon has that in the Stormlight Archive.
  22. That is, I've got to say one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Upvote for the amazingness of it all!
  23. When you say eighty the number and think Ati the shard...
  24. Oh thanks haha you guys are awesome thought I was missing something
  25. I definitely see it working for some people more than others, I have yet to read it seeing as I am in an very Cosmere mood of late but history is something that interests me quite a lot and seeing personality and bias creep through into a document as the first couple of pages suggests is very interesting to me. But yeah I think it was a stupid story to release in an anthology he should of just stuck with his original plan which would have probably been a lot more interesting for most people. Of course I still haven't finished A Clash of KIngs yet... I have no problems with GRRM either his writing his beautiful, his characters very real and his world building superb and subtle, but yeah I think it has been seeing Game of Thrones that has made me not as excited about the plot. Knowing even the broad strokes of what is going to happen normally doesn't turn me off a series but I guess I'm just Cosmere obsessed and find very little time for other books, even though none of the Cosmere books are my favorite books... hmm I wonder what it is about them that I love so much... Edit: Past self you are an idiot! It's the crazy interconnectedness and insane depth of the systems Brandon creates that you love so much. Along with strong characters and well defined and unique settings and not to mention his prose is getting better all the time. Why wouldn't love it? Gosh didn't think I would have to explain it to you of all people...
