  1. What were your guy's favourite characters I remember really liking Nakor with his oranges and Macros the Black just because he was mysterious. Easily impressed =)
  2. If it has to be anything anime or unrelated game would be the best idea. However I certainly would not want to see a direct adaptation, a spin off suitable for the medium of film of TV series would be cool though.
  3. Three more favourites I would just like to add all in the realms of fiction if not fantasy, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Foer, this book is a million times better than the movie, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, the discussion at the end sort of ruins the book a mite but it's an amazing dystopian classic. But for nerding out there is absolutely nothing that comes close to Sanderson. He is and will be my favourite author for some time at least.
  4. The concept of an audio book is interesting to me but I like reading the books myself be that through a physical copy (preferred) or on my e -reader (more regularly nowadays). I feel that was how they were written and I can completely understand enjoying the books through an audio experience but yeah that is just me for now any ways.
  5. This is so well deserved, congratulations Brandon =)
  6. I've tried to get in to them but something keeps stopping me. I'd say definitely give them a go though, absolutely hilarious, well at least the small part I've read.
  7. Yay my name is Josh too =) Welcome, welcome!
  8. Your priority list is basically what mine looks like. So much more interested in the future meaty Cosmere novels than the YA novels coming out now. Of course I'll still give them a chance (I've just started The Rithmatist) but I'm way too deep in the universe of Cosmere to fall for much else outside of literary fiction at the moment. Really hyped for Shadows for Silence short story too, read the preview and it looks like it will be awesome.
  9. That is interesting I just had a thought that you could get a different ability depending on your birth date. You could add stuff from the signs of the zodiac... that would be awesome.
  10. The scene in Harsh Cry of the Heron where Shirakawa Kaede asks her husband Takeo to commit seppuku, one of the most gut wrenching scenes I've ever read. But perfect in all its tragedy. Perfect scene for Sanderson, hmm between the ending of Well of Ascension and Kaladin turning away from the chasm due to Syl's arrival with the poison leaf. What can I say I like tragic and dramatic scenes =)
  11. I find the Gollancz covers a lot more appealing, they are quite minimalist and follow a theme of shards and colour. I do like the Tor covers of Way of Kings and Warbreaker more than the Gollancz ones though. But I really do not like this cover. I can recognize the artistry in it but it just reminds me of the US WoT covers which I do not like. I definitely can understand why people would see this cover as excellent and Way of Kings had a pretty glorious book cover but I cannot get over the awkward stance Kaladin is in, looking at the concept poses and despite those being a bit overused, still look a lot better than what is on the cover now. I also can't get behind the use of the Shattered Plains again, I can understand that it will probably be the major setting for this book due to basically every POV character being there but I would have liked, as someone else said, to see Shadesmar and Shallan on the cover. Any ways that's just my opinion sorry about the rant.
  12. 33,000 words is the count I get.
  13. Really loved that short story by the way. Epic, tragic and amusing.
  14. Well the one story with three different sides is very much a commentary on beliefs. One of the main characters views religion as something that gets in the way of progress one lives by her beliefs and the third character the assassin has his own beliefs though they are somewhat twisted. It is mostly a warning against following tradition blindly though. And most of the conflict from the eventual interactions between these three will be their relatively closed mindedness. The story about the city in the sky is basically concerned with consequences and how much one who lives for thousands of years can view a particular event as stemming from something he has done wrong. In response to your question about the bleak topic of suicide for my short story. Well I was getting stuck trying to write a short piece of fiction for my class. Fantasy I tend to see as a long term thing so I found it quite difficult to write something in that vein. Poetry has always been an outlet for the darker thoughts inside of me, so I wrote a short story on the topic of suicide. It is roughly 1700 words. It focuses on the impact of someone taking their own life (pretty much unsuccessfully as is the case). It is made of six or seven segments. The first one is the main characters thoughts while in a coma. The second is the Doctor/Nurse checking up on the girl. The third is from the perspective of the note that she wrote. The fourth is the mother some time afterwards. The fifth is from the father who has now left the family. And the last perspective is from the girl during the incident. It was for a multiple PoV task. I feel death in general but especially suicide is covered very disrespectfully in news articles. I think I remember seeing an article where someone said that this girl killed herself because it was part of the "fashion of emo". And I think saying things like that just really isn't helpful. I've sort of lost my train of thought now... Well I wanted to show suicide not glorify it or condemn it but just unveil it. The story does give many reasons not to do it of course but it doesn't say the girl was wrong by doing it. I don't know if this explains anything but yeah. My thoughts on the topic itself are not at all clear and rather hard to explain.
  15. So the series as a whole has a good resolution?
  16. In regards to Philosophy I've done two entrance papers for it. Big questions and moral philosophy. I liked Kant's ideas the most but haven't looked much in to any of it. Your stories sound really interesting, especially the one about the man falling from the sky. I really like quirky ideas like that. I've started writing numerous stories, one that's typical epic fantasy except with a lot less magic, assassins with magic versus peaceful group with not very advanced technology versus oriental culture with advanced technology (still pre-modern). That has sort of come to a stand still at the moment. My main epic I plan on writing one day is basically about a city in the clouds (oversimplified). Had another idea about a story of someone who writes a story to escape his troubles but finds that he starts to believe what he is writing is true but yeah just an idea as of yet. And I've written one very short story about suicide for my creative writing paper. And many many poems on predominantly personal and depressing topics. But yeah I really love writing. Aside from fantasy fiction I really enjoy reading critical reviews and wouldn't mind writing reviews for a magazine one day too.
  17. Yeah for me I always wanted more Pug story and I felt the new characters for the most part were just stretching the story thin. But I do plan on reading the last couple of books so hopefully they go back to Pugs story a bit more.
  18. Things are good in New Zealand... at least I don't think we've been taken over yet or anything =) Just finished a Creative Writing paper and two history ones for my second year doing a BA. Now going to do another creative writing paper and English and History next semester. Hoping to become a writer, actually I'll just write regardless but yeah. Looking to do teaching when I leave University though. What are your stories about? I'm a stronger poet than prose writer though I have aspirations to write short novels and maybe try doing something super epic one day.
  19. Well hello Brian I'm here acknowledging you =) hope you have a great time on this site. Good luck with your novels =)
  20. This will be kind of unrelated. But I would just like to thank you for introducing me to Puella Magi Madoka Magica if somewhat tangentially through the question you asked Brandon. Finally got it and have just finished watching it. Totally awesome sauce! Edit: Oh and by the way that picture creeps me out. So. Much. =)
  21. I don't think I can contribute much aside from while it all does sort of add up we don't nearly know enough to really come to any decision. But something I'm wondering is why would Sazed turn Demoux into a Mistborn? I mean do you think he had foreknowledge about him becoming a Sharder and wanted to have someone on the inside of the group? Would he need someone on the inside of the group I really wish we knew what Sazed knew at the moment. I know he has to take care of Scadrial but I'm sure he's aware of Odium. I don't really know where I'm going with this. But yeah I liked your logic especially the narrative explanation. Oh and just something I wasn't certain about can Mistborn burn metal from other planets, though that does make sense I just haven't heard it before.
  22. Yeah my computer can barely handle my Skyrim but it is heavily modded so I guess that is my fault.
  23. Yeah I agree with Windrunner. I'm pretty sure Odium would have had an effect on most Shardworlds but I'm doubtful he would have been to them all yet. I think for shards to merge they have to have a single mind behind them. I feel like it's not really something that can be decided and it needs time. They might be able to make a bond of some kind but short of one entity controlling both I don't think that it would work. But anything can happen at this stage I guess.
  24. " "Odium has been active on all other planets, including several we haven't seen yet." Signing report from Kogiopsis. http://www.theoryland.com/intvsresults.php?kwt='odium' seventh one down. " That aside I think he might have gone to Sel because the two shards there were probably (and this is a big probably) working together. We know Odium doesn't like more than one shard working with another, as Brandon as said that Odium didn't want what happened with Ruin and Preservation combining to happen at all. And that Cultivation and Honor were lovers so they probably worked together. So I'm pretty certain that he wants to pick off those that present a united front. But what he did on Sel was probably just a part of a bigger thing and we just haven't seen that yet. So the why for me is that Odium wants to destroy Shards and there were two on Sel who were united and he couldn't have that so bam! Dead. But yeah I'm tired so I don't know how helpful this answer is =)
  25. Yeah that was where I started and only got to Shallan before calling it quits. Of course I went back and read it after reading everything else and it's freaking awesome but very hard for someone who hasn't read other Brandon books. I have gotten my Nan and two friends to read the books. My nan will read anything so that was easy she really enjoyed Mistborn. The other two were also easy to convince. Actually one of them is now a member on this site, Sodalis. My other friend is now on WoK and is probably enjoying it more than I did. I think I would start a casual reader on Mistborn or Emperor's Soul. But I really enjoyed reading them in publication order myself as it has a nice progression to it.
