  1. This is basically true, but I think there is a better way of saying it.  Atium gives you a limited view of the Spiritual Realm.  When Elend used Duralumin and Atium, it gave him a much stronger view of the Spiritual Realm.

I get the feeling that burning Atium, in all its forms, has an effect on your ability to see the spiritual realm.  That this relationship is primarily temporal is interesting.

There's a WoB I'm having trouble finding where it's said that atium lets you read the connections and probabilities in the Spiritual Realm, and that this is also what electrum lets you do

  2. THEORY: Nightblood is a quasi-sliver.  According to the coppermind you have to be human first to become a sliver.  However, the investiture of breath grants human properties.  Nightblood was invested with a large amount of investiture at the same moment he was granted human properties and thus became a quasi-sliver.

There's really not much point to Nightblood being a quasi-sliver when he's already an artificial spren/splinter

Q: Can Nogntblood be considered a splinter and does it function like a spren realmatically, are there distinct differences is what I'm asking.

A: Nightblood is kind of his own strange thing. He's an attempt to use one magic to replicate something in another. He's closest to a spren, but kind of like a...robot spren, for lack of better words to use.

  3. WoB that Ruin and Preservation created Scadrial

    Chaos (17 October 2008)
Would the Three Metallic Arts operate in other worlds, or are they direct results of Ruin and Preservation and thus only operate in Scadrial?

    Brandon Sanderson (20 October 2008)
To use Feruchemy or Allomancy in almost every case, one must have the right spiritual and genetic codes, imprinted upon people during the creation of Scadrial by Ati and Leras. To use Hemalurgy, one must first have someone with these right spiritual and genetic codes, then take the power from them. Other people on other worlds are not going to simply discover the Three Metallic Arts by accident.

  4. WoB is Roshar was around before Honor and Cultivation showed up there, and that there were Splinters of Adonalsium on it

    Lance Alvein
Did Cultivation come to Roshar with Honor, or was she already on Roshar when Honor arrived?

    Brandon Sanderson
    Good question. They came together.

    Wetlander
Please explain what you will about Shards and Splintering and Slivers.

    Brandon Sanderson
An event happened long ago which destroyed something called Adonalsium into 16 pieces. And 16 people took up that power.

    Question
    People?

    Brandon Sanderson
I call all intelligent species people. *snip for Mistborn spoilers* A Splinter is a term used by certain people in the cosmere for power of Adonalsium which has no person caring for it, no... no person holding it, which has attained self-awareness.

    Wetlander
So is that like the mists and the Well? Are they...

    Brandon Sanderson
They are not, because they have not attained self-awareness. But, the Seons are self-aware. So, any piece, for instance there were some spren on Roshar before Honor and Cultivation got there. Those were already Splinters of Adonalsium where he had left power which attained sentience on its own. So, it can be intentional is what I am saying, does that make sense? You have seen other splinters.

    Wetlander
Are the highstorms related to the splintering of Honor?

    Brandon Sanderson
The highstorms are more related to the mist from Mistborn which terminology we have not discussed yet. You have seen splinters quite a bit on various planets.

  5. Here's the specific WoB if ya want it.  Whatever Investment is going on seems to be being done on a Spiritual level

    Viper
Hah. So in Cosmere, does physics work the same way in the physical realm as it does in our world? Specifically, particle physics; and are atoms made up of protons and neutrons and electrons, and is light photons, etc?

    Brandon Sanderson
    Yes.

    Viper
So what's at the core of an atom of Atium? Ate-teum? Also how do you pronounce it? At-teum?

    Brandon Sanderson
Yes. And the matter is just normal matter, but it's wrapped in the spiritual. The Spiritual DNA [or something] is what makes it magical.

    Viper
(Note: he might've said slightly more about this but I didn't write it down and I don't remember. Sorry for not bringing a tape recorder :(/> )

  6. I believe there's a WoB somewhere where he stated that all alloys of Atium are temporal in nature. Just throwing this in here. That aside, I like the idea that Steel/Iron Atium alloys age metal forwards and back respectively. Super neat idea.

    Here's the WoB

    Maru Nui ()

What would an atium-electrum alloy do in Allomancy?

    Brandon Sanderson ()

The alloys of atium have various temporal effects.

  7. Yeah, though to be completely correct it would be "Enmetal", since there are two grammatical genders, and we say "en metall".

That said, English already has a funny example: "Tungsten" literally means "heavystone", but we just call it volfram.

Words are great and often more hilarious than you'd think

  8. I am aware that god metals return but was unaware that normal metals return. Could you point me in the direction of that post/knowledge?

Here's the original post where it was said http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/3573-phoenix-comicon/#entry56958

I just got back from the Phoenix Comic on, where Brandon is a guest at, and I must say it was an honor to meet him. He read parts of Wax/Wayne 2, Legion 2, and the Taravangian interlude in WoR. There weren't a lot of cosmeric goodies, but I did get a couple interesting tidbits in relation to Mistborn: Ruin would have had to manifest to reabsorb the atium, the Well of Ascension did not come at a price to Preservation's power, and perhaps the most interesting one. Burned metals are turned into a different form, and will eventually return to the planet. The Pits of Hath sin are meant to foreshadow this.

There were a couple of cosplayers, with one particular group dressed as Sazed, Vin, Elend, and Tindwyl. I have audio of the spotlight (which includes the readings), but I don't know if I am allowed to post it. I probably will post a picture of the four costumers later.

  9. The Lord Ruler is referred to as a "Sliver" of Preservation, because he held the power and then gave it up.  In that same definition, though, the Seons are the Splinters of Devotion, not the Aons.

Actually, WoB is that the Aons at the center of Seons are the Splinter, not the Seons themselves

    Viper

Ok real quick then I'll get back in line again. There's a bunch of people who follow this stuff online ... I just found out about it ... I don't want to call them a cult, but ... So anyway, at one point someone asked you if Seons were shards of—

    Brandon Sanderson

    Aona.

    Viper

Devotion ... yeah Aona, and you said that was close. My question is: are the Aons at the HEART of the Seons shards of Devotion?

    Brandon Sanderson

    No, but close.

    Viper

But ... I was sure ... the floating Aon at the heart, that's not a shard ...

    Brandon Sanderson

(taking pity on me) You're close but a word is wrong. You're using the wrong terminology.

    Viper

SPLINTER. Are the Aons at the heart of Seons SPLINTERS of Aona?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Viper

    Can I post that online?

    Brandon Sanderson

    . . . Ok. That's fine. It's been long enough, they've earned it.

    (source)

  10. When Adonalsium shattered, did the Shards then inhabit pre-existing worlds or did they create a world to inhabit?

Also, is it important that certain shards ended up in the same worlds, e.g. Preservation and Ruin?

Finally, is it easier to pair shards if they are opposites, again such as with P&R=H, and if so would that make Odium's opposite a target?

Not able to answer all of these, but

    1. Some of the Shards inhabit pre-existing worlds (Roshar), and some made their own (Scadrial)

  11. I never said it was the whole of the Spiritweb. I thought it might be, but I was EXTREMELY uncertain about it. I was, prior to reading the WoB, decently confident that Connection was at least part of the Spiritweb.

Connection, I noticed, does in fact extend to time. The Connection to a Shard...

Maybe that's the definition of Investiture?

Keep in mind that this post (not necessarily this topic) is basically me thinking in words. I'm not sure if Connection to a Shard and that Shard's Investment (state of being given Investiture or having the potential to do i.e. Mistborn/Mistings, Radiants, etc.) are the same thing, but at the very least, they are connected.

    SH Spoilers

Kelsier was a Mistborn (so lots of Preservation Investiture), but had a weak Connection to Preservation

  12. Investure is energy, matter is energy too, just in a different form, as Voidus explained, e=mc^2 shows this.

Investiture isn't energy, at least not in that way.  Investiture, matter, and energy  can transform between each other.

The cosmere takes physics from our universe, and adds additional layers to it. Where we have energy and matter (simplified), the cosmere has additional building blocks that make reality. Investiture is one of these. It IS possible to change matter, to energy, to investiture, and back.

    (source)

  13. Well, Stormgate is right that the soul/spiritweb is made of connections (at least partially).

We have a WoB on it

    *snip*

The piece your missing is the nature of a person's Spiritual aspect. This is similar to a Platonic idea--the idea that there's a perfect version of everyone somewhere. It's a mix of their connections to places, people, and times with raw investiture. The soul, you might say.

    *snip*

    (source)

  14. I don't think you can create matter out of nothing, one gram of matter would require the same amount of energy as a nuke and I don't think the dor is that powerful. Perhaps it transforms a object into wood or water, or manipulates existing sources.

Investiture can become matter and energy

  15. Would that mean Elend was a Sliver? Because, you know, he did ingest a bead of metal that was literally the essence of preservation in a super concentrated form.

WoB says no, but a Lerasium Mistborn does get closer to matching the definition of Sliver-ness.

    zas678

Also, would the Elantrians and the Lerasium-mistings be considered Slivers? Or is just the Lord Ruler and Vin Slivers (Via the Well)? Or do you need more power to be considered a Sliver?

    Brandon Sanderson (Goodreads)

Elantrians are not slivers. Mistborn trilogy spoiler warnings follow! The Lord Ruler was indeed a Sliver. So was Vin. For the rest, I would say probably not.

What defines an actual Sliver of Adonalsium is not as clear-cut as you might think. It's a term that in-universe people who study this have applied to various existences and states. Every single person on the world of Scadrial has a bit of Leras in them—a bit of the power of Preservation. Every single person has a bit of Ati in them. There's a certain threshold where these scholars would call you a Sliver of Adonalsium. But I would say that any regular Misting is probably not a Sliver. A full Lerasium Mistborn is getting closer, but people who have held one of the powers are what would probably be termed a Sliver by the definitions. If you hold all the power that makes you a Shard, but the Lord Ruler held a little bit of it and then let it go. From then on they referred to that change in him—the residue, what was left—as a Sliver. When he held it he became the Shard for a short time, and Vin was a Shard for a short time. After Vin gave up the power, what Kelsier is at the end of the trilogy—that's a Sliver of Adonalsium.

  16. I would argue that you logically could store any allomantic power in a metalmind composed of the same metal as the the respective power. This is mainly because we already know that Preservation/Harmony has already invested the metal with the allomantic power it grants, which would mean the metal could in fact be invested with the given ability.

Metals are not Allomantically invested, as EagleOfTheForestPath talked about above your post.  The metal acts as a gateway and filter for Preservation's power.

  17. As for the bendalloy bubbles... The idea is interesting and that would be an incredible shielding device, but wouldn't containing the entire ship in a bubble just keep the ship moving at the same velocity but speed up everybody inside? I mean, making a bubble on a train doesn't make the car you are riding in try to leap forwards.

    *snip*

Also on a slightly unrelated tangent, if one could control a windrunner's powers in a fabrial, they could probably make an Alcubierre drive

Kurkistan's Everything We Know About Time Bubbles thread actually contains a lot of discussion about using time bubbles to make an Alcubierre drive
