Nialliv strode back and forth in his room. In his hand, he held a message that had just arrived. SoT defeated, apparent mortal. General location known. Could it be? It had been so many years... He had thought it would be thousands mor before she would fall. But she had. And now... A slow smile spread across his face. And now, revenge.

Where's that?

Can I join your RP, @Shard of Thought @beantheboy12?

For an enchantment, you have to put some sort of spell into the object. You can't really write Ritual magic in Spiritweb. It could be possible, however, to take an existing enchantment from either Natural or Innate magic and move it to another object. I’d better explain this from the top, starting with belief.Belief is a broad term, and can mean a lot of things. Right now, I’m talking about belief in power, that a person/thing has capability. (I can explain what I mean in greater detail later; I don’t have a lot of time now) If a person believes in something or someone, Natural magic will flow into that person. Each believer produces only a small amount of power, but as the number of believers increases, the person begins to be more capable. This could make them stronger or smarter or more skilled, but does not give them the ability to share that power with others.Ascension is the process by which a person with this power transitions from a physical form into a cognitive shadow, turning into a ‘god’. This could either happen voluntarily or upon death, and would cause the power to become more accessible to the person. Because of this, they can now share their power with their believers in the form of miracles. It would also make it harder to influence the PR, as they reside in the CR.For a person to perform a miracle, they must first have a strong belief in their god. If it is not strong enough, the power will not be able to flow into them, won’t come through as strongly, or won’t last long enough. This power will enhance their natural ability to manipulate the world, and this manipulation would be the miracle. It would draw on the power of belief of all the god’s believers. None of this is supposed to be easy; going down this path would require even more dedication that learning to use Ritual magic.

I think that alchemy/enchanting is more of a spellwork/Innate magic, personally. Maybe that sort of magic could be a Ritual/Innate combination. Fleshcrafting/Soulworking is basically just spiritweb manipulation, which is something that can be done scientifically. When you say 'change CS' do you mean turn them back into humans? A god would not just give people powers. If their followers had enough faith, they would be able to channel power to perform miracles.
-
I was thinking that only the people with very high levels of faith would be able to perform miracles. Others might be able to perform smaller miracles, but nothing too exciting. Innates could recieve power as well, as an alternative to mined crystals. Because of the nature of belief, if enough people believe in anything physical it should ascend. What that means might be different, depending on the object; previously nonsapient objects would likely gain some form of intelligence, but it would be much more sprenlike then a human who did the same.

It's been more than four months since the Other Side of the World thread was posted, and people (thank you @Arky-boi and @I think I am here.) have done some great worldbuilding around the concept. Here's a thread to consolidate what we have so far. If you have any comments, questions, or additions, post below!

I imagine that the manipulation of Natural magic would be tied to belief and the gods. Someone believing in someone would cause power to flow to them. Enough power, and you Ascend. Gods would be able to push power downwards to their followers if they believed enough; this would be what causes miracles.

Enolc raised an eyebrow. Interesting. "The next ship doesn't leave for another three alleystorms, which is..." He checked his timepiece. "A little more than a month away." He looked back up at Red. "I can make sure that the boat doesn't follow our path, if you wish."
-
I don't think that's how it would work, though. The trigger could be anything; it's built into the spell. The trick is detecting that the trigger has been activated and making sure it hits the intended target. The spell itself would be drawn out beforehand.
-
Great idea! Are you suggesting that each Innate user would have a different "area of specialty" so to speak? I would imagine Ritual spells as a completed spell that has been written down but only partially activated. When a certain trigger is activated (which may be a phrase) the power is released. It could be hard to determine a specific target, but you could do "point-and-aim" things or blanket effects.
-
I think that any of that sort of thing would be tied to the Natural concept of things changing based on beliefs and perceptions. It wouldn't really be as controllable.
-
"Welcome aboard, Redatrick. My name's Enolc." He extended his hand for a shake. "I'll be your captain for this voyage."
-
Could the Innate system be spell-based, or is that too cliche? It would be a good halfway point between Natural and Ritual magics.
-
Enolc sighed. He'd finally managed to deal with the scientists, and now this. "And who would you be?" he asked. @Arky-boi @I think I am here. @Dr. Dapper
-
Do you mean Innate? Natural magic is the kind that makes the world change to match your perception. I think Innate should be a sort of halfway point between Natural and Ritual magics.
-
It's good! It seems very programmatic, which is what I think this system should be going for. If other people agree, I think we can begin to build the Ritual system off of this. I had an idea regarding the Natural/Ritual dichotomy: what if Ritual magic disrupted Natural magic?
-
Sounds good to me! If there are symbols, they should be based off of geometrics instead of the landscape.
-
You know, I'm seeing an interesting division here. The natural magic of the world is very loose and undefined: people can believe anything, so almost anything can happen. Because it's so nebulous, however, it's hard to make it do anything reliably The Ritual magic, however, is very structured. It can't do as much as Natural magic because of its rules, but what it can do, it does well. And it does it reliably. Could we build off of this dichotomy? Maybe Innate magic could be some sort of combination of the two.
-
This sounds good! I really like the idea of people being able to "ascend" if enough people believe in them. That has a lot of possibilities... I think that Innates should still have to use fuel, but they would have a different source available to them (say, an Ascended). It would also be easier and more efficient for them, as well. Ritual magic, on the other hand, would be available to anyone who had the inclination to seek it out. It would replicate anything the Innate magic could do (and even more, potentially) but require a large investment of time to learn how to use it properly. I think we might want to redefine how the symbols work; as they stand, it's very similar to Selish magic.

*blatantly false*

It actually wasn't the best in combat, if I remember correctly. It was intended as a sort of meditative behavior. My thought for the crystals was a source for the magic that would be more or less nonrenewable, similar to fossil fuels here on earth. There would likely be only one type, but there could be a few more.

Dances are used on Sel (ChaySan). I like the idea of crystals forming in hotspots. Kind of like the pits of Hathsin, but all over the planet. Ecology magic is the way the world changes to match the Spritual, right?
-
I think that the bodily modifications are kind of creepy... On a different subject: Could the magic system be tied to the world's mutability, or should we use something else?
