  1. The voice chuckled. "So proud. You haven't changed much, even after five thousand years. Then again, I suppose I haven't, either..."
  2. The voice laughed again. "Fine. My name is Tom Joebob." There was a pause. "Happy?"
  3. The voice laughed. "Would you even know who I am? You've admitted that you don't remember me. Or were you lying?" The sound of fingertips drumming across a table could be heard.
  4. I think you misunderstand what I mean. I was suggesting that enchanting would be taking Innate spells that had been placed on objects and moving them to a different object. They could be broken down, but only so much. The point was not to steal from the Innate's soul. When I say alchemy, I mean potion-mixing. I was thinking that that would be taking things (plants, animals) from nature with magic in them and mixing them together to see what happens.
  5. "I wouldn't know. I've never lost a Shard." The voice paused again. "Maybe you don't want to remember."
  6. "I knew you once." The voice paused. "We were... friends."
  7. "Don't you remember me?"
  8. "Do I? Maybe I just wanted to hear your voice again."
  9. "What makes you think I want anything?" The voice sounded hurt.
  10. "Who am I?" The voice sounded amused. "Shouldn't the question be who you are, Tamika?"
  11. "Hello, Thought." The voice spoke without emotion.
  12. "Can I speak to her, please?"
  13. The voice on the telephone was deep and smooth. "Is Thought there?"
  14. The phone rang.
  15. I personally like the idea of having the investiture be a semi-nonrenewable resource, like coal. *sigh* I don't think that Ritual magic should be able to fabricate a completely artificial spiritweb. I feel like that doesn't have enough restrictions. You could make anything. I would suggest instead that enchantments from Ritual magic are "stolen" from the magic that Innates use. Alchemy could be trying to make use of Natural magic.
  16. Sam shivered. "I have felt his touch once before... and I have felt it again today. Watch yourself, humans. His reach is long."
  17. Sam shook his head again. "No. Not Calamity." He leaned in closer and looked around furtively. "Have you ever heard the name Tom Joebob?"
  18. Sam shook his head. "Whatever deeds you have done, this power does not seek you for them. Something you should be glad indeed for, as I know of only one man who could search my soul in such a manner."
  19. Sam let out an amused hiss. "I'm sure you find her pleasing enough, but I hope you realize why my tastes would not be the same." His face turned serious. "No, it was something else. Something was looking for your companion. Something powerful."
  20. Sam shook his head. "I... can't drink. It was something else. When I looked at your companion..."
  21. Sam stared into his drink. It wasn't alcoholic; even a half-handerfle didn't react too good to something like that.He wished that he could drink something that would make him forget, as he had heard alcohol did. Forget his mistakes. Forget his failures. It was his own fault that he'd wound up here, friendless, homeless, and soon to be cashless. That just made it worse. He sighed, and looked up across the bar. It was pretty packed here today; things weren’t going too well in the city. Not that they ever did, here, but today was worse than usual. He caught a few dirty glances from the tavern-goers. That was only to be expected; handerfles weren’t exactly the most popular folk. At least none of them had tried to attack him yet. That didn’t happen often, thankfully, but when it did it never ended well. His eyes fell on a couple in one of the corners. They were deep in discussion over something. He was too far away to hear what they were saying, but something about the woman had caught his attention. He frowned, trying to think just what it was that she reminded him of.Suddenly, a force crashed into his mind. He gasped, sliding off his chair onto the floor. The room spun as something rummaged through his mind, searching for something…And then it was over. He stood back up, drained. What had that been?
  22. I think so too. I don't think that Spiritweb is the right way to go to get what you want. What spiritweb does is give things a soul and define what they are. How could it achieve the effects you are saying it could achieve?
